1. Same process applies, other than anything listed here. Remember to submit them alphabetically by last name. Also, remember you only have 1000 points total, not 1000 for each round.
2. For this round, when submitting your bids, include 2 lists. One of every player you have won bidding in Round 1 and one of your bids for Round 2.
3. We have 20 owners, a good number, IMO, so there will be no more added.
4. Official deadline for Round 2 is 11:59 PM EST Sunday Night, but the sooner I get all 20 entries, the sooner we can move onto Round 3, and it shoudn't take as long now because you've already researched some.

"A couple other things - Chubby pointed out that I have one player going to Honolulu Blue instead of him. I'm guessing there are 2-3 more errors in there somewhere. For example, if you bid 76 and its recorded as 7 on the left, let me know. I'm not checking each teams point totals closely, but if you are caught using more than 1000 points regardless if it's my fault or yours, you will be disqualified. This doesn't mean if I record you down for 22 when you meant 2 you will be, but if you meant 22 and I record it down as 2 and you proceed to spend the extra 20 points and someone points out that you overspent, you will be DQ'ed."

Also, discussion is welcome and encouraged, but remember you are still bidding against the other people, so keep that in mind when discussing what great players are out there and your team.

To begin this thread with a Quiksand-style dola, I'm pretty pleased with my results from Round 1.

The best starting rotation in the contest (and I was tied for Lefty Grove untilthe 2nd to last entry) and 'the greatest hitter that ever lived' provides a good foundation. Ewing, Brouthers, Wilson are all Hall of Famers who were among the best players at their position, and I'm sure everyone is familiar with Larry Walker, a 5-time All-Star and NL MVP. Satchel Paige for 11 and Buck Ewing for 2 are two of the great steals of the first round.

Overall, other steals include Mark McGwire for 1 pt, Cy Young for 25, Jackie Robinson for 40, George Sisler for 41, Eddie Plank at 11, Randy Johnson for 40, Hank Greenberg for 30, Lou Gehrig for 40, Nomar Garciaparra for 5 and Ty Cobb for 65. The two highest paid players were Josh Gibson at 384 and Oscar Charleston at 306, both by Oykib. The most surprising name I saw was Tim Wallach, bid on for 1 point. One other note is that 222 people were bidded on, out of 520 slots.

I ended up deciding against trying too many lowball bids, since I figured that with 30 teams the odds of one slipping through were slim. Shows what I know.

Your current Coffee Warlordians. As is fairly obvious, we have some serious hitting power already. I lost out on a lot of pitchers, so it's time to shore up our staff. But with the heart of our order set with DiMaggio, Robinson, Foxx, Maris and Sandberg, this team should score. Grace, Lofton, Winfield, and Santo (talk about an uber backup in Santo), provide some good options off the bench. If I can't net a truly great leadoff man, I can plug Lofton up there and be content. I dunno if he's a future Hall guy, but every time I see that guy play, he makes shit happen.

Pitching is of course, still a hole. Phil Niekro, the God of Knucklers, rocks, of course, and I picked up a quality, new-era consistent pitcher in Jon Lieber. He's not one of the greats, but he's dependable. I picked him as a discount Spot Starter/Long Reliever type. Relief pitching is shaping up to be pretty damn tough, though I need to track down 2 more studs.

And who better to manage this group of misfits than Earl Weaver?

Looks like you just need to keep hitting the link. It does load eventually.

I already have 18 players plus a manager, which I don't think is a good sign. I loaded up on player's from the first half of the century, figuring they'd go cheaper than recent guys. That might not be a great strategy, since when it comes time to vote I expect a lot of people won't recognize the names on my list.

My team has a solid starting rotation (Joss, Brown, Waddell and Walsh), all of whom were dominant back in the day. Offensively we'll have a ton of speed and plenty of hits, with the fastest player in history (Bell) leading off and plenty of .400 hitters and high OBP behind him - Hornsby, Lajoie, Sisler, Terry and Speaker, not to mention Stan Musial. Power won't match up with other teams, though. Johnny Mize his 50+ HRs in an era where virtually nobody did, but other than that there's no real deep threat. Still, it should be a tough lineup to face, with lots of baserunners.

No great bargains, but getting two pitchers who combined for 600 or so wins for 13 points makes me happy.

Obviously I'm short a few pitchers, but I wouldn't mind putting this team on the field against anyone. I have Bill James' favorite manager (McCarthy), his #1 2nd baseman (Morgan), and his #1 3rd baseman (Schmidt). The other guys aren't too bad either; you can look them up in the usual places.

Anyway, I have lots of points to invest in the next round, so let's see if I can't make this team a little bit better...

P.S. Maybe for a project I'll put these teams into Diamond Mind or OOTP and see what the results would be.

Pretty happy with my results...I'm surprised I didn't have many other bids to compete with for Bench, Baker and Fingers. Bench is the best catcher of all time, in my opinion, and in a 'thin' position, I'm glad I could grab a good one. Biggio was an amazing second baseman for a long, long time, and I figured he'd go for cheap. Frank Baker was an amazing combination of power and speed, and one of the best 3B ever. The Wizard of Oz is one of the best, if not the best, glovemen ever, and at a position like SS, I'm adamant about having good D. Koufax is one of my top 5 SPs of all time, and will be a nice start to the rotation...though I must say I'm a little disappointed he's the only SP I got. Fingers and Wetteland are a great bullpen pair, and I put in a chump bid for Gagne but was outbid. Fingers was the '81 MVP and Cy Young, and Wetteland is only one slot behind him on the All-Time Saves list. Both sport career ERA's under 3.00 (2.90, 2.93) and were great relievers.

LaRussa is a 4-time manager of the year, and has 2009 career wins. Not too shabby...

My assessment is that I have one of, if not the best pitching staffs so far. 3 hall of famers, along with Halladay who is a cy young award winner, and 3 very good relief aces. My offence is suspect at 1B and 3B, but Galarraga and Wallach are just good backups. Carter is easily a top-10 catcher of all time, so to have him as a catcher is great, and any lineup with Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken, Jr can't be too bad either. Andruw Jones' defence is also a great asset to the team.

I am clearly in big trouble, almost everyone I got was meant to be a backup on my team. I went with low offers on about 15 players and then targeted 11 guys with big money and i failed miserably, only Eck, Rose and Carlton came thru. I do however think that Harimoto is the steal of the draft, he is pretty much considered the best Japanese player ever, had power, speed and could hit for average.

The first time the link was uploaded it was a web page. I still haven't figured out how I did that, but the .xls file is working for almost everyone.

If you don't have excel, you probably can't load up the .xls file. Someone last night downloaded Excel 97 or something like that and it worked (Check the other thread). If you have Microsoft Works I could send you the file using that.

I've tried saving it as a wep page (.htm) and uploading it, but geocities keeps giving me a Page not Found message when I do. I think Geocities has issues with Excel, but if anybody with geocities can help me, that would be great.

No one blew as much cash as me. I feel like George Steinbrenner.

But I have pretty much my whole staring lineup. I over spent to make sure that I got the two greatest Negro League position players ever. Then I got the third one in a steal. Barry Larkin, I figured, would be vastly underrated and I got him for cheap, too.

Dazzy Vance was the biggest strikeout pitcher of his era. I figured that I'd pair him with an outfield that could really cover some ground to. I thoought McGwire and Greenberg would go fairly cheap, but went Murray because I KNEW he would and I was blowing alot of money elsewhere.

Billy southworth for two when Jim fregosi went for one makes me feel really good about myself as well. Right now my squad is:

C - Josh Gibson - gold glove - quality catcher whose power is only compared to Babe Ruth; also was a high average hitter with great plate discipline.

1B - Eddie Murray - switch-hitting and a fine defender; Was Mr. Consistent-- every year was .300-30-100 in an era where those numbers were all top ten.

2B - Barry Larkin or Max Bishop - Larkin's really a SS, but he is more of an all-around player than Bishop. Bishop is a classic do anything to get on base and then score a billion runs type of leadoff hitter.

SS - 'Pop' Lloyd or Barry Larkin - The best Negro League infielder ever. Connie Mack said that if you put Lloyd and his contemporary Honus Wagner in a bag and picked one out randomly that you wouldn't go wrong either way. Also, one of two players that I planned on using as a manager if Southworth fell through.

3B - Shigeo Nagashima - Japan's "Mr. Baseball". Nagashima is the best-loved and most respected baseball man over here. Revered as the game's best all-around and clutch player, Nagashima played gold glove defense at third while staying one of the top hitters in the league throughout his career. He went on to become the Japanese game's best manager and general manager. He was pulled out of retirement to manage Japan's dream team for this year's Olympics.

LF- Tim Raines - Switch hitter and a speed demon with a little pop and an excellent OBP. Also a great left fielder to continue my defensive theme.

CF - Oscar Charleston - The consensus greatest Negro League player ever. John Mcgraw, among other notables, described him as the greatest he ever saw. Of course that was in a speed and defense era and Charleston had both and a good deal of power as well.

RF - Vladimir Guerrero - you know him

SP1 - Robin Roberts - Great pitcher who was the classic crafty veteran type. One of the great fastballs of his era, but not a strikeout pitcher. The best innings eater relative to era in MLB history.

SP2 - Masaichi Kaneda - lefty; His numbers ae amazing. I wasn't going to reach that far into the past with the NPB. But his numbers are freakish. They're like looking at Honus Wagner's stat lines. Pitched 370+ innings a year while striking out 300+ guys. Holds every significant career pitching record in Japan and most of the single season ones as well.

SP3 - Dazzy Vance - the best strikeout pitcher from an era when no on e struck out. His k/9 relative to his league are amazing-- ERA+ is good, too.

Manager - Billy Southworth - In twelve years as a manager he was 1044 - 704, a career .593 winning percentage. He should be a Hall of Famer. He won four pennants and two world series. think an early version of Whitey Herzog or later version of John Mcgraw.

Barry doesn't want to play anything but SS. Even if he can play another position. And while your at it you had better be ready to pay him more than he's worth to ride the pine 130 games a year.

I was confused about this. There are actually two Mike Marshalls who could be drafted - Mike Marshall the reliever; and Mike Marshall, the OF/1B.

I'm GUESSING that both wanted Mike the reliever, but I'm not certain of this.

Definitely possible, though there are some hurdles to overcome. Diamond Mind released a Greatest Players disk which should have most of the players that we'll be drafting (no Negro or Japanese League players). I'm starting to form some ideas of how to set up the league, the championship crowing process, how much interaction I'd like from you guys, etc.

I don't want to steal Bishop's thunder, so I'm going to keep it low key. More details to come when I'm good and ready.
