Here comes the rain... I mean ice... again..

Falling on head like a memory, falling on my head like a new... emotion.

I guess we're supposed to get a nasty freezing rain storm tonight...

Ardent, stay off the streets!

I'm amazed at people in Colorado who can't drive in the snow. I was out there skiing earlier this week, and we came back to Denver / Castle Rock in the middle of a snow "storm" that dumped about 1 inch on the ground. We went to dinner at Outback around 7:00, and they told us they were sending employees home and getting ready to close because of the weather. My friend's explanation was that the area is full of people from Southern California and Texas.

We have an ice storm warning here too, but nothing has started falling yet. An ice storm last February left 2/3 of the city (Lexington) without power for a week. Hopefully it isn't as serious this time around

Crap, coming down I-35 in Texas today it was just raining and there were some good wrecks. As a trucker i can testify that no one does know how to drive in bad wheather now. I am tired of people freaking out over rain! When did rain become as deadly as ice it the minds of people? I agree with Ragone, people who slow down to a crawl for little or no reason are a big cause of accidents. Two accidents i saw today were clearly from 4-wheelers who hit their brakes when they went into heavy rain and it went from there........

Four wheeler? You're definitely a trucker. My dad did that for 30 years.

That's one thing I'll never understand about Lawrence- everyone drives slower in rain and faster on ice. As someone coming from the land of ~45 inches of rain a year (Houston) this just baffles me. I drive about 5-10 mph under on ice since I have a little light car but can just cut through rain at regular speeds.

And what's up with Kansas (or Mizzou for that matter)- is this area of the country just perfect for ice or something?

Remember the blizzard conditions we had late night a month or so ago Si.. i had to drive home in that crap on 435 north.. 0 visibility.. winds blowing 20-30 mph west to east across the highway.. so it was drifting snow... and what do i see going southbound on 435.. THREE snow plows.. all in a row.. going down one lane.. WTF?

Then to make matters worse.. i'm puttering along about 20mph in my front wheel drive car... no problems.. when i come up on a grandmother in a full sized navigator puttering along at 5 mph.. wtf? so now i have to attempt a pass.. which i barely do.. not to mention the 3 cars in line behind me because none of them can seem to see anything so they all are following me..

I reach my offramp at 291... and all 3 of those cars follow me off the highway.. hah.. all 3 then resume back on 435.. but that's just hilarity at best

Shoot- I'm a Texas boy with a southern car (Grand Am = lightweight and poor brakes). I don't go out in blizzards like that.

That nasty ice storm where it sleeted 48 hours straight- that was the oddest thing: it never snowed or rained: it just sleeted for an entire 2 days without letting up at all- I stayed in my apartment the entire time.

Well Si.. i was coming home when that started.. i had no choice..

And snow plowing in this town is a freaking joke.. i payed 3k last year in kc1 tax's for snow plowing and trash pickup.. when it costs 100 bucks a year to get a private company to pick up your trash.. so i payed 2900 bucks.. to not see my street get plowed at all.. the snow melted naturally.. 4 days later... wtf?

I remember in Los Angeles, if there was rain, the Los Angelino's would slow down to 5mph and the transplants would drive 100mph (to show the locals it's okay). And all hell would break loose! Wrecks everywhere, and it was only sprinkling.

In Texas it's the opposite. Its been raining a lot here in the San Antonio area the past couple weeks.....which has lead to a ton of wrecks. On the 1st night of it we had a flash flood watch and that night the wife and I were watching the news....13 wrecks within 10 miles of our house that day. All of the ones they showed involved the same big a** SUVs and Pickups that go 10-15mph over the speed limit in bad weather because they have 4WD.

It's icing pretty well now, as well as a mix of snow thrown in for good measure. My dad just called me and had an accident. He said he started sliding and there was nothing he could do but brace for the collision. Everyone's ok, but he's a little ticked. I told him to stay home today....

This is something that should be somehow taught in driver's ed., or tested on road tests. You should be able to drive well in conditions that are normal for your area. In Winnipeg, it seems like a lot of people are decent snow drivers, but there's still some that just suck.

Yep, 72 and sunny in Monroe, La today. Went jogging, shorts, no shirt. Nice.

Speaking of people not knowing how to drive in snow, I've heard all my life about how people in the South can't drive in snow, but I've also lived in Indianapolis and Pittsburgh, and there are plenty of people in those cities who don't know how to drive in snow and ice either. The only big difference is that in the North, you actually have a snow removal system.

The only time you really have to slow down when its raining is when you are going through low-lying areas, you can hydroplane if you hit a big spot of standing water. But yeah, people can't drive in the elements. I was driving down I-75 the other week, for the most part it wasn't snowing, then I hit a patch of flurries, nothing major, nothing on the road, everybody dropped about 20 mph for no reason. Pretty stupid.

We are supposed to get freezing rain and sleet tonight, then about 6-8 inches of snow on top of it for tomorrow. Joyous.

All of which reminds me of a man joke circulating among my female co-workers last month:

Why is a man like a snowstorm?
You never know when he's coming, how many inches you're going to get, or how long he's going to last.

I told this to my wife, and she just said, deadpan, "After a while, you do know." I'm still trying to figure out if that was a compliment or a putdown!

Well, Michigan is getting slammed pretty hard today. Freeways are a parking lot around Detroit, west side of the state is not much better. And lucky me, I get to drive home from work now at the worst part of it. Yippee.
