IWS#57 Results: This One Painted CRIMson
We hade 42 entries, guys. That's great! We blew away some of the other recent IWS's (IWS#56 drew 32 for reference), and we beat my goal of having at least 40 entries (albeit barely).
Here are the results. 1. Name the best backup quarterback in the NFL. I wasn't surprised at all that Warner took this one. I was surprised at how strong the voting turned out for him. I figured Brunell would get more love, and I didn't pick O'Donnell to end with the the second most votes (a much distant second, that is). In what will become a running theme in this IWS, if you didn't have Warner, you were screwed. Kurt Warner 30 Neil O'Donnell 3 Doug Flutie 2 Gus Frerotte 2 Vinny Testaverde 1 Trent Dilfer 1 Koy Detmer 1 Mark Brunell 1 Tim Hasselback 1 2. Name a team that has been in the NFL since 1994 that has not appeared in any of the 38 Super Bowls. I expected this to be a fun question with support for a number of different answers, and that's what I got. Arizona ended up with a sizable lead, no doubt due to their longterm residence in NFL loserdom. Our heavy Detroit contingent on the board kicked in some votes. I was surprised Seattle was the second highest, although I can't for sure who I thought actually would be second. Just not them. Fun thing about this question? Eight of them are technically incorrect (not that that matters in IWS contests). Jacksonville began play in 1995, and Cleveland in 1999. Remember, the current Cleveland franchise is a new franchise and the old franchise is now in Baltimore (and went to the 2000 Super Bowl, of course). Arizona Cardinals 17 Seattle Seahawks 7 Detroit Lions 6 Jacksonville Jaguars 4 New Orleans Saints 4 Cleveland Browns 4 3. Name a #1 overall pick who was on a regular season NFL roster this past season. It's not a real shocker that last year's top pick took the prize in this one. Actually, the surprise may have been that it ended up being so competitive. Obviously, the continuously rising stars of superstar quarterbacks Manning and Vick had their impact on this question. Carson Palmer 16 Peyton Manning 10 Michael Vick 9 David Carr 4 Drew Bledsoe 1 Tim Couch 1 Dan Wilkinson 1 4. Name a Super Bowl MVP from the past ten Super Bowls. This is another question where you might think the most recent Super Bowl MVP (Jackson) would get all the nods. In retrospect, it wasn't too shocking to see Brady come in and not only take the lead but sweep away with this one. As a defensive player, Jackson doesn't get the notoriety an offensive skill player would get. And since Brady is the last such MVP winner and is currently about to return to that game, it now makes sense. I didn't see it coming, though. Tom Brady 24 Dexter Jackson 6 Kurt Warner 4 John Elway 4 Ray Lewis 2 Brett Favre 1 Larry Brown 1 5. Name a standout commercial from last year's Super Bowl telecast. I thought this would be a fun and interesting question. As it turned out, it was the contest's most controversial and not close at all. All I can say is WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Terry Tate takes it! If you didn't have Tate, you were out of this one. I collectively grouped the Budweiser choices. I would have been more choosy about combing them, but several of the international posters hurt by this question had this, and I already knew that anyone not having Tate was going to lose anyway. I will say this--with Tate being talked about here at FOFC the past year, and very recently while the contest was going, I was a little surprised that it wasn't picked up on more. Speaking for the other commercials, I was most surprised not to see any Castaway commerical references. Terry Tate, Office Linebacker 27 Budweiser 6 Miller Light Catfight 2 Osbournes Pepsi Twist 2 Zebra Ref 1 Visa- Yo, Yao, Yogi 1 Britney Spears Pepsi 1 Gatorade Jordan vs Jordan 1 Monkey Verizon 1 6. Name a franchise that has lost more than one Super Bowl. Wow, the Bills slaughtered this one. Yeah, I expected them to take it, as the most recent of the famous Super Bowl losing franchises. Still, to watch them clean up like this was amazing. This became another have it or lose it question as a result. The Vikings getting more votes than the more recent Broncos was also surprising, considering all the Elway nods we got in the Super Bowl MVP question. The voters also mostly focused on franchises that have never won a Super Bowl, despite the fact that the question allowed for teams that had (as well as losing two or more). Buffalo Bills 37 Minnesota Vikings 4 Denver Broncos 1 There you go, guys. And as the title of this thread suggets, the winner was...Crim! He won by just an edge over ice4277, sabotai, and IWS#56 winner wheels, who lost simply because they picked Manning over Palmer in the first round pick question. That turned out to be the most critical question int he game, it appears. Here are the final rankings: 1. Crim (195644160) 2t. ice4277 (122277600) 2t. sabotai (122277600) 2t. wheels (122277600) 5. dangarion (80559360) 6t. ardent enthusiast (69050880) 6t. pskov (69050880) 6t. Tredwel (69050880) 9. I got my answer for the Superbowl commercial question by searching the forum for last year's discussion on it. I honestly couldn't think of a single one on my own.

Damn. It was a tossup for me between Manning and Palmer; Manning was the first one to pop into my head so I took him. Oh well, not too bad, and that makes two top 5 or 6 results for me in the three of these I've entered, so I'll take it.

Chief Rum -- The Zebra Commercial (my second favorite of last year's Super Bowl after Terry Tate) is for Budweiser and so should be grouped there.

And I still have 1 participation more then you. ![]() BTW, I guessed pretty well with Budweiser, no? Stupid Cardinals and non-playing Carson Palmer, ruining my chances to be a top player, making me 21st in this competiton. Chief, I think the choice for Brady is boosted by him returning to the Super Bowl in 2 days and more importantly recently being mentioned as the American picture of steroids users during a Bush speech... If the Patriots had missed the playoffs, then this question could have really gone places... Hey, I topped QuikSand!

Cool, did pretty well. At the time I wasn't sure that the Cardinals hadn't been to a superbowl, so went with the easy pick of the Lions, but obviously they had not...

Yeah, yeah - rub it in. Actually, I got 4 out of 6 "right" answers, and my one mistake was simply failing to account for age. Before Buffalo became synonymous with losing superbowls, that was the rap on Minnesota. And before the Cardinals became the league's perennial losers, that mantle was held by the Saints. I booted both of those questions by answering on my own, rather than remembering to put myself in younger shoes. Fran who? Archie who? |

Damn, I suck.
And Chief, technically, the Cleveland Browns answer is correct. As part of the whole arrangement to have the Ravens in Baltimore, everything about the Browns including their historical records was to remain in Cleveland. In historical terms, I guess, Cleveland's owner shut down the franchise, sold its rights to the NFL, and then got an expansion team in Baltimore to replace the Cleveland franchise, populated with personnel from the Cleveland franchise. When the NFL awarded Cleveland a new team, they essentially gave the old Cleveland rights to the new team, including history, logos, and everything. I think this would be verified by looking at the record books of both teams in which Baltimore's records are only supposed to go back to the time they moved from Cleveland, while Cleveland's records are for all the teams that played there, from the late 40s to the mid 90s, as well as the new team. Of course, in layman's understanding, everyone's going to say that the Cleveland franchise became the Baltimore franchise and that the new Cleveland franchise is an expansion team. But, I do remember a lot of fuss being made when the new Browns joined in 1999 that they had all the history and records of the old Browns. |

Ah. Only the Arizona Cardinals got in my way. I coulda finished last!
Also, in reference to the first question: The first name that popped into my head was Marc Bulger. "But," I thought, "he's no longer a backup." Then Koy Detmer popped into my head. And we all know that I always go with the first thing that pops into my head. Never occurred to me to put down the man that Bulger replaced. And no, I don't seriously think Koy Detmer is the best backup in the NFL. The head-popping rule overrides logic. |

Stupid me. How the hell could I remember that Terry Tate was last year's Superbowl? On that question I blanked and simply put Budweiser as I know there are always new Budweiser commercials.
I had the top choice for every pick except for that one.. unfortunate. |

I do not think that Warner is the best back up in the league...I did think, however, that most people would pick him, thus my choice.
Damn you Carson Palmer! I figured with the Colts making it to the AFC Championship game, Payton would be fresh on people's minds. Just not enough minds, I guess. BLAST! Last edited by sabotai : 01-30-2004 at 07:37 PM. |
