2005 Hall of Fame (J-365): who will be inducted ?
Tomorow, we will be exactly ONE YEAR away from the election of the 2005 Hall of Fame class, and as you probably know, I'm already looking forward to it because my all-time favourite player Steve Young will be eligible this year.
I want your opinion on who should make it in 2005 among these names : 1st year eligibles Steve Young Dan Marino Derrick Thomas Michael Irvin Others Gary Zimmerman Harry Carson George Young Paul Tagliabue Art Monk Richard Dent Bob KuechenbergRuss Grimm Ray Guy Cliff Harris L.C Greenwood Art Modell Ken Stabler Steve Tasker Ralph Wilson JR Ken Anderson Roger Craig Phil Simms Jim Plunkett Ray Guy

I don't know that Roger Craig or Phil Simms will ever make it, and i'm not sure either deserves to. Even if they do, I think we're talking about the veterans committee many years from now.
They were both pretty damn good though. Marino is an absolute lock. |

I know very little about how the NFL Hall Of Fame works, I know they can be screwy in regards to who they let in and what not but I can't imagine why George Young isn't already in. If I were picking purely on talent I would say that Marino, George Young, Art Monk, Russ Grimm, Micheal Irvin and LC Greenwood should get in.

But if it were based purely on accomplishment and true greatness, Art Monk would never get in. Irvin to me is borderline, but I'm pretty confident he will be inducted by 2010 at latest. |

Darkiller, stupid question, but what's the J365, some kind of control number for next year's Hall of Fame class? I'm not as up on NFL HOF procedures as I should be.

Oh, and Steve Tasker is going to be the ultimate test of whether a special teamer can make the hall of fame. I don't think most voters are going to go for it. Again, if he gets in I think it'll be pretty far down the line.
I wouldn't mind being pleasantly surprised and see him elected earlier though. |

I think with Monk and Irvin you have to add Super Bowl rings into the mix. They not only played at that high level but they have multiple rings as well. |

You must really like Ray Guy, including him on the list twice

What he actually wrote is J-365, as in 'minus'. And J is jour, which is 'day' in french. So what he's basically saying is that the induction will take place in 365 days... So what you wrote was actually unintentionnally (sp?) pretty funny to me...

Harry Carson deserves to get in, imho. Either next year or later.
I agree with cthomer500, Marino is guaranteed in. As for this Steve Young guy, who is he ? Only famous 'niner QB I remember is Joe Montana... ![]()

Sorry for the confusions (J-365 instead of D-365) and Ray Guy being placed twice on that list. I guess I got a little too excited writing about the Hall of Fame !
I think Marino is a lock, and would love to think that Steve Young is as well. Am I right or should I have reason to worry that he might not get in on the first ballot ? I'm getting overly anxious about that now...I've thought about it for the past 10 years (since he won the SB) and now we're getting close to it so that's why I'm kinda losing my nerves a little bit with this issue. I'll tell you how "fool" I am: today I wrote a letter and plan on sending it tomorow to the Hall of Fame to officially nominate Steve Young for the class of 2005 (I know he would, of course, be automatically nominated but I felt it was a good way to show my support to his candidacy since "fans" can nominate whoever they want), so I've got my letter ready to post....and I'll make the trip from Paris to Canton, Ohio if he is indeed inducted....

I believe the triplets (Emmitt, Irvin and Aikman) will go in together.
Ken Stabler is a favorite of mine, I would like to see him in. Cliff Harris is a stud. Derrick Thomas should be a lock. He dominated games, I don't care that his career was shortened. He was a special player.

I would say Steve Young, Marino, and George Young for sure. Since the NFL allows a max of six inductees a year I think that next year might be the year for Carson and Guy. I think Thomas is going to be very close. I think he should go in but I am not sure of the first ballot. From what I understand, once they get down to the 15 finalists, the Saturday before the Super Bowl, all the voters meet and a sports writer from each inductee's city basically "campaigns" for their guy to get in.

If I were king of the world:
Young, Marino, D. Thomas, Carson, and Tasker would get in next year. I can't really comment on the owners/commish. |

How come Young is only eligible now, when he retired before Marino? Or did they retire at the same time?

If they sent me a ballot, I'd vote for
Dan Marino Ray Guy Harry Carson Then I'd wonder whether I had to vote for exactly six guys or if I could just vote for up to six guys. If I have to vote for three more, then I'd likely go with Derrick Thomas, Steve Tasker, and George Young. (And I might well have decided to include any or all of the last three whether I had to get to six or not) Last edited by JonInMiddleGA : 02-04-2004 at 03:54 PM. |

No they both retired after the 1999 season so they'll both be eligible this year for the 2005 class.

Tasker will be an interesting decision. A wide receiver who made his mark as a special teamer. The best special teamer of his era IMO. How would you quantitfy that? What about a long snapper? The Hall has already shown a disdain for kickers and punters

You guys are forgetting one person on that list that will be going in right up front. Tabliabue.
Marino and Young are both locks. Irvin doesn't make it, I also think Stabler might make it as well. lets see, thats 3. Derrick Thomas should go in as well, and they may make a special consideration for him too........ Ray Guy, I could see go in as well. Honestly, Plunkett, Simms, Irvin and others, they were top players, but this is one that you have to give in 2 of the best QB's around, both still have records in the books (I actually think Steve's were broke this year or last)

Tasker needs to get in..... and I feel Young and Marino should get in of the first year folks....
If Young doesn't get in on the first ballot, there's no way Aikman should when his time comes..... Last edited by TLK : 02-04-2004 at 09:11 PM. |

I don't know that Young is a lock to get in on the first ballot...but in my opinion he will.
Derrick Thomas and Dan Marino are definite locks, in my opinion. As for the rest...they're for the most part before my time.

My first-reaction ballot if I had one:
Marino, Thomas, S Young, Guy - definitely G Young, Tagliabue, Carson, Tasker - maybe |
