The Detroit Expos?!
Not sure if this has been posted or not, but I hadn't heard much of it.
I doubt much will come of it, but still...interesting, if not a bit creepy. Interview with Nikco Riesgo about investment plan to move Expos It seems fishy at best. |

If they would move into Tiger Stadium (and rename it of course) I would instantly become an Expo fan. The National League has better baseball anyway. Tiger Stadium is indeed the best place to see a ballgame! And yes, that includes Yankee Stadium. I currently live about 2o blocks from Yankee Stadium and don't see what the big deal is. Maybe if they hadn't remodled/wrecked it in the '70s, but not now...
The Detroit Expos! Sounds good to me! |

I heard about this a month or so, but I thought it was just wishful thinkin' on the part of the proponents.
Detroit's large enough to handle two MLB teams, IMO. I mean, New York handled three at various times. This makes the most sense to me, since it also keeps alive one of baseball's jewels of history. I'd love to get a second chance to see a ballgame in Tiger Stadium. |

Now I can't help but wonder if this played some part in Mike Illitch 'suddenly' deciding that the Tigers needed to get better fast, much better fast. Looks like the $40 million to Pudge might have been good insurance to protect Mikey's investment!

Bill Ford might be getting a little nervouse himself with that big, relatively new Pontiac Silverdome sitting all empty and unused up in Oakland County, one of the richest countys in the U.S. I love competition!!!

I haven't looked at the MLB agreement lately, but, don't the owners have to approve such a move? And, if so, why would they? I think most of the owners solidly line up behind the territorial rights line of thinking.

They'd have to approve a move, but I think in a case like this, there might be more benefits than drawbacks.
For one thing, there's still a strong contingent in Detroit, from what I understand, who are fiercely attached to Tiger Stadium. I suspect if it meant saving the stadium, they'd pack it in in droves to watch the Expos play. For another, competition for the market forces the Tigers to actually try to field a good team. That doesn't mean $100 million payrolls, but it does mean being smart about the money they spend. If both ownership groups are willing to invest in their respective teams, Detroit could easily support two teams, and the resulting improvement in both clubs could only mean good things for TV and radio rights sales. |

I agree. lol. i havent even read the article yet just this thread.
But hell, i'd go to old Tiger Stadium to see them. especially if they were the lovable loser type team. The Tigers are defiantely a losing team, with some hope for this season granted. it pains people to see them lose...on the other hand The Expos? who really cares. and yes, the detroit metro area could support two teams. |

I think the odds of this happening are about the same as the Tigers returning to playoff contention this year - that is, not good.
Still, it's a cute idea, and the Detroit area will definitely support two teams - if both of them are good. |
