OT: Crazy Party Poker Hand

Subtitled My Newborn Daughter is My Lucky Charm

Before I paste the subject hand, a little background. Just two hands before this one, EMPERESS and I were the only two people left in a pot. I had A 7 and the flop came out:

2 K 8

At this point I checked at the BB+1 position and eventually EMPERESS bet $1 and I called and everyone else folded. Turn comes out

3

I check again. EMPERESS bets $15 and then it gets crazy. With my 6 day old daughter in my arms, I grab the mouse and start moving it over to fold. All of a sudden she wakes up, thrashes in my arms, and the next thing I know I've gone all-in. Hard to get mad at a 6-day old, so I just said oh well and prepared to leave the table. River comes out

6

I give my daughter a kiss and apologize to EMPERESS. She doesn't respond.

With that history stated, here's the hand:

EMPERESS balance $0, lost $27.85 [ A A ] [ a full house, Aces full of tens -- A,A,A,T,T,T ]

Did I just get incredibly lucky out of one single thrash of my newborn child? Seems to me I should have been at $14, then she thrashed and I should have been at $0. I get lucky, and 2 hands later I have to think that the only reason EMPERESS went all-in is because she figured I was bluffing or drawing again. Isn't that the only explanation for her betting pattern?

Good story. Tell your daughter she had good poker instincts from birth when you're trying to teach her for real when she's older.

Maybe she thought that you had tens full of Aces? That would have explained your betting, but still made her think that she had top hand.

Funny thing...I lost on a hand just like that this morning at 3am in a Poker Stars Freeroll.

I'm holding AA and raise to get rid of the fluff. One guy all-ins with a small stack (I've got 10th biggest stack out of 300 at the time) and another guy calls. Flop comes out:

J A J

Shit, I'm gold. Raise a good chunk and the other guy...whose got a stack about as big as mine...calls. The turn:

J

Hmmm...I raise another good chunk again and the other guy pushes in his stack. FANTASTIC...I've got aces full of Jacks and this guy is pushing his stack in...I love it.

Just as I push my stack in I think..."does he have the other Jack??"...nah, can't be. I haven't seen quads in a couple of weeks. River comes:

6

Not a biggie anyways...I've got aces full of jacks...and the other guy probably has the other ace and thinks he's got it. DOH!!!!

He had the other jack...GODDAMNIT!!!!!! Stayed up all night to lose to quads...give me a break!!!

I mean, what the hell is he doing calling a pre-flop raise with J6 off-suit anyways???!?!?!? Play right or don't play at all!!!

Ok...I'm calm now.

Tell me about it.

I was really proud of myself last night. I played really tight, didn't jump in on borderline hands and only saw the flop maybe 20% of the time and won 90% of the hands I did play. Probably played much too agressively with a full house (AAAJJ) with 3 jacks on the board...but, c'mon...what are the odds??

Even played in my first 7 Card Stud H/Lo last night. That was insteresting. Very different game. It was odd...the guys who played a lot of hands were early chip leaders but were gone by the time I played my second hand. Definitely pays to play tight to start to let the aggressive guys kill each other off. Finished around 150th...I was pretty impressed with myself for the first time playing that game.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, I only called the blind because I was on the button. I figured why not for 50 cents at this point because the table is very tight. So what happens? I flop two pair. Betting gets around and I raise to $5 to scare off the straight draws and take my pot. They don't scare.

I'm 100% sure that they hit the straight on the turn, which they did. But with 13 outs (boat or flush) I'm better than 28% to overtake them on the river. The bet is $12.50 to me knowing that the small blind will call, making the pot $43 in my mind. So I go with my hastily figured pot odds that tell me it's not the smartest call ever but not the worst, either. I call.

Obviously I hit it on the river. Is my application of my newbie concept of pot odds way off on this? I saw that I had a 28.2% chance of drawing a winner. My bet would have been a little under 30% of the pot.

Any assistance is appreciated. And if the answer is that I suck, well then I've gotten bad beat about 10 times in a week, so I'm not overly concerned.

Very nice.

I predict that your daughter is going to be the next Annie Duke when she grows up.

I probably wouldn't have played this hand even on the button for only .50, but I don't know that it was a terrible play. Still you can't be thrilled about most the hands that you may hit on the flop. Making middle and bottom pottom pair on the flop has a way of costing you a lot of money in the long run. And even if you hit your flush you can't be certain it will be good.

I thought the flop play was good although I probably would have made a bigger raise. Now that you have made your 2 pair you want to try and drive those drawing hands out. Your turn call wasn't a bad one unless you were up against a bigger flush draw. Then obviously your outs are cut down to 4. But assuming all your heart outs were good (which it seems they were) then you needed to be getting about 3:1 on your money and if you were certain the small blind was going to call you were getting about 3.5:1. So not a bad call.

I didn't check any of the calculations, but it seems that the call is easy given your numbers. If you miss on the river, you won't be losing anything else, but if you hit you're going to extract a large penalty from the opponents, giving you really good odds on the turn call.

maybe i should think about having a kid......
