Have the PC police made Tom Clancy a permanent Nazi fighter?
Has anyone played the latest Rainbow Six game? I just bought it and watched the preview movie and I can't believe the storyline is about some historian finding a historic Nazi document and changing his ways to the cause of the Third Reich.
That series has always been about counter-terrorism, since when did 21st century Hitler recruits threaten our national security? When Clancy's movie "Sum of All Fears" was in development, I understand there was a controversy because Arab-American groups criticized it as being racist because of the way it portrayed Arabs. Go figure. Is this what happened to the game as well? I can honestly say that I have never once in my life been afraid of modern-day Nazis hurting me or my familiy. How did this label stick with the Clancy stories? Does he write about this in all his books or is this the PC police gone awry?

Actually, I don't think ANY of Clancy's novels have been about Nazis. I agree... I think the Hollywood PC-Police have gotten their hooks into this one... |

I think it's more likely that they're just trying to have a different type of opponent in this game than the common terrorists from the previous chapters. Also keep in mind that remnants of the Third Reich have been and remain a very common plot element in action-intrigue novels.

Basically, the only politically-correct bad guy these days is a white racist.
Anyone else who is portrayed as "evil" is really just misunderstood and in need of some sort of federal affirmative action program. |

Saw an interview with Clancy after the Afleck movie came out, asked what he thought of the change in bad guys he basically responded "As long as they pay me, so what?" Clancy is the typical mile-wide, inch-deep result of lots of money coming his way. It also regulates his almost prophetic-like story-telling to nothing more than comic book stuff as I see it.

Clancy jumped the shark as a novelist when he made Jack Ryan President of the United States...

That about sums it up for me. I loved Patriot Games and Red Storm Rising though. |

LOL, I stopped reading the Jack Ryan books once he was made President too. The earlier ones, though, were great reads. Did he ever do anythign with his Without Remorse title? I enjoyed that one a lot, especially because it was released near the end of the good Ryan books.

Without giving too much away, the latest Clancy doesn't have Ryan as the sitting President any longer.
I must confess to being a little mystified by your assertion that the latest Rainbow Six game has Nazis as the bad guy. Is this an expansion pack to Raven Shield, or an entirely new game? The Xbox version of Rainbow Six 3 has nothing of the sort, for example. |

No he's not President anymore, but I was practically rolling my eyes with the conclusion regarding his kid. It was a nice little story, but that and other silly "oh, gee, what a coincidence" moments throughout the rest of the book detracted from it.
The book ending also seemed to imply he was going to carry this new storyline forward as well. I thought he was going to go back and write a post-Red Rabbit, pre-DCI book and that would finish Ryan as a character. I guess he decided to move on anyway. Even so, he's the only fiction author I buy. I just don't see much in fiction anymore that holds my interest. Most books I get nowadays are history books. |

I didn't even know that he had a novel after Red Rabbit.... I bought Red Rabbit a few months back, but haven't bothered to read it yet. |

Are you sure you're talking about Rainbow Six? Cause I can guarantee that Rainbow Six Three is not about Nazis...

Like I said in the initial post, I haven't played the game in its entirety yet but the opening film is all about Neo-Nazis and so is the first mission. |
