Ok, I ran a uninstall program for an old game, and it deleted my entire games directory. Not usually a problem, but I lost my Hearts of Iron and CM: Hereford save games that I'm doing dynasties on. I tried a system restore, but that didn't recover the files. Does anybody know of any (preferably free) software that will work for me?

Did a google search for "Recover Deleted FIles" and it gave me a list of programs. I downloaded the "Active Undelete" demo and I'll let you know how this one works, although I don't know if any of the demo's provided will let you recover anything.

You could try this though:

Don't create any new files. The more new data you load on to your system, the less of a chance you have to recover deleted files.

The demo won't allow recovery of more than 64 KB files...

Anyway, just go down the list of programs until you find one that will work, but try to article linked first. Try using these as a last resort because of what jeff061 said. If you install them over where your file is...it's gone.

I found a couple of programs to use, but I haven't been able to recover any of the files. I think they are lost for good. I haven't downloaded anything, but I think I overwrote them when I did my system restore. Thanks for the help though.

Pc Inspector File recovery I used this program, but be warned. It is a bit buggy, and can crash. I would only reccomend retrieving 1 or 2 files at a time.
