SkyDog's First 5.0d Career

FOF2004 Empty Cupboard Career

Tucker Tigers, Version 5.0d

With the releases of patches 5.0c and 5.0d, I've decided to fire up a serious career and chronicle it here. I will be using the team names, cities and logos from the IHOF because I don't want to switch back and forth all the time. I'm excited to get another career posted.

HOUSE RULES/SETTINGS

1. ROSTER SET: generated by Heavy Reign utility.
2. EMPTY CUPBOARD: I'll be quick-simming through 2003, then cutting everyone and starting fresh in 2004. My team will never have players from before the 2004 amateur draft.
3. RENEGOTIATIONS: I may offer an extension in the final year of a player's contract, or a "cap out" offer. No other renegotiating allowed. Extensions may only be offered after the regular season is completed. Restricted players must be re-signed before the first week of 20-step free agency. (No waiting for the price to come down in other words.)
4. TRADING: I'll only offer trades during the draft. I may accept AI-offered trades.
5. INJURIES: Set at 200.
6. INFLATION: Default (2.8/8.0)
7. STAFF SALARIES: I cannot offer a salary greater than the current league high for that job.
8. OTHER: Just in case I forgot anything, I'll add it as we go along.

LEAGUE STRUCTURE
As mentioned earlier, I'm using the same league structure as the IHOF. Here are the divisions:

AC North

Boston
North Plainfield
Rochester
Syracuse

AC South
San Antonio
Vicksburg
Stillwater
Fort Worth

AC East
Tucker
Conyers
Orlando
Georgia

AC West
Maassluis
Gothenburg
Bordeaux
Paris

NC North
Ann Arbor
Minnesota
Columbus
RayCo

NC South
Outer Banks
Asheville
Springfield
Leesburg

NC East
Frederick
Chesapeake
Brooklyn
Astoria

NC West
San Luis Obispo
Fairbanks
Anaheim
Boulder

That should do it for the prelimanaries. On to 2004!

2004 ROSTER SHAPING

FREE AGENCY
N/A this year.

AMATEUR DRAFT
I have the #11 pick in the draft. There were two very solid-looking QB's available, and I was able to grab one of them. Here's my draft as a whole:

POSNAMECURFUTVOLSOL40BENCHAGI
1(11)QB Jackie Terrell27741434.69237.37
2(11)CB Lester Weikel255253164.45226.92
3(11)S Timothy Sampson355520414.49197.09
4(11)DT Brady Wayne244253214.84327.80
5(11)DE Jerald Hightower243668344.95277.30
6(11)RB Danny Romund323937264.53187.22
7(11)WR Chester Arvold223449224.32106.97

I'm hoping Terrell becomes a franchise QB. He's god strong blue-bar ratings across the board, wtih the exception of 2-minute offense, where he's likely to be below-average-to-average.

LATE FREE AGENCY
Naturally, I sign a whole bunch of guys here to fill out the roster.

Five of seven draftees had future ratings increase, one dropped by one point, and one stayed the same. Can't argue with that. We're going to stink this year, but at least we've got a few pieces in place.

NOTE: CB Sollars is injured, and I therefore couldn't cut him. If his injury isn't healed by preseason, I'll just put him on IR for the year. If it is healed, I'll cut him.

2004 SEASON

PRESEASON
We managed to win a game in the preseason. QB Terrell was named MVP with an 8 for 12, 110-yard, 1 TD, 0 INT performance. Romund also had 12 carries for 64 yards and a TD in that win, over Outer Banks. We also looked respectable in a 24-20 loss at Frederick in the final week of preseason. Roman had 13 carries for 81 yards in that one. He's gonna get the ball quite a bit this year, it would appear.

INJURIES OF NOTE: DT Brady Wayne dislocated his elbow in the 2nd preseason game, and is Out, with full strength in 6 weeks. No other draftees suffered injuries in preseason.

RECORD: 1-3

REGULAR SEASON

Week 1 at Orlando Knights
Terrell and Romund both had solid games: 16 for 24 for 134 yards and 0 INT's, and 15 carries for 72 yards, respectively. We didn't get much out of the rest of the squad as we succumbed 24-12.

Week 2 at San Luis Obispo Burn
The Burn shut us out 27-0, and there's really nothing positive to write about. We only had 205 yards of offense on the day.

Week 3 at San Antonio Volunteers
We face previously-winless San Antonio. The Vols jump out to a 17-0 halftime lead, and cruise 27-14. Terrell has a decent game: 20 for 32, 198 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT's. DE Jerald Hightower hyperextends his elbow and is Out, but should be full strength in another 3 weeks.

Week 4 SYRACUSE MOHAWKS
The 3-0 Mohawks come to town and dismantle us 31-6. RB Lazaro Caesar pounds us for 20 carries and 111 yards and 2 TD's, with no gain longer than 17 yards: a bruising day. Terrell is 21 for 35 for 194 yards with 0 TD's or INT's.

Week 5 at Georgia Gridlock
The defense performs pretty well against 3-1 Georgia, but the offense is anemic, and we fall to 0-5 by a 13-0 count. We only had 8 first downs all day. DE Ralph Chadwick gets 2 sacks, giving him 3.5 on the year.

Week 6 at Rochester Lake Monsters

We had a chance for our first win in this win, but were unable to close the deal in overtime, and Rochester hits a 50-yard FG with 4:53 remaining to send us to our 6th straight loss. Terrell had a VERY nice day: 18 for 34 for 275 yards with 2 TD's and 0 INT's, including a 63-yard TD to Arvold.

Week 7 at Boston Rhinos
Hope for a win against 0-5 Boston is proved to be false, as we fall to 0-7 with a 24-7 loss. Boston RB Philip Carrell has 20 carries for 153 yards on the day. Our WR Bryce Flockhard catches 7 passes for 138 yards and a TD.

Week 8 ORLANDO KNIGHTS
5-2 Orlando comes to town, and we give them a *VERY* tough game. The game is tied at halftime, but the Knights scored the only 2nd-half TD to win 28-21. Romund carries 17 times for 110 yards and a TD. Terrell is 18 for 35 for 270 yards with 2 TD's and 2 INT's. Arvold has 6 catches for 109 yards and 2 TD's.

MIDSEASON STATS REPORT
LEADING PASSER: Jackie Terrell--143 for 254, 1533 yards, 6 TD's, 8 INT, 68.8 Rating
LEADING RUSHER: Danny Romund--125 carries for 467 yards (3.7ypc), 1 TD.
LEADING RECEIVER: Chester Arvold--34 catches, 451 yards, 3 TD's.
LEADING TACKLER: ILB Dwayne Burnett--33 tackles, 18 assists

Week 9 NORTH PLAINFIELD PLAGUE
Not much positive to report about this 19-13 loss to a 2-5 team. We only had 23:46 time of possession in this one. Terrell throws 3 INT's. The only bright spot on the day is a 53-yard run by Romund. Apart from that run, he only had 25 yards though. DE Kenny Hallock ruptures his abductor, and is done for the season.

Week 10 at Conyers Condors
We head out to play 6-3 Conyers this week, and the fans are treated to a good bit of scoring. We lead 28-21 going into the 4th quarter, but the Condors score 21 unanswered points for grab a 42-28 win. Terrell has a good game--18 for 32 for 200 yards with 2 TD's and 0 INT's, but the defense allows the Condors star RB Orlando Bobbitt 169 yards on only 14 carries. He also caught 5 passes for 63 yards and a TD. Bobbitt is in his 8th year, rushed for 1474 yards last year, and is among the leaders this year with 831 yards. I'll be happy to see him retire. I have a feeling that having him in my division is not going to make me not happy that AI teams keep their star players around longer.

Week 11 OPEN
At least we can't lose this week.

Week 12 FAIRBANKS NORTHSTARS
The 7-3 Northstars come to Tucker and get their hats handed to them as we grab our first win of the year! Very good QB Ray Malone is held to a miserable 15 for 33 for 180 yards with 4 INT's. Timothy Sampson returns one of those INT's 79 yards for a TD. Romund has 112 yards rushing, backup Goodwin has 85 yards on 8 carries, and Terrell throws for 2TD's with 1 INT. The defense held 'em to only 207 yards and 10 first downs. Nice!!!

Week 13 BORDEAUX VINEYARDS

We don't build on the win from last week. In fact, this is probably our worst performance to date as we fall 26-3, only gaining 160 yards of offense all day long. Bordeaux held the ball for 38:10, and Romund was our "leading" rusher with a paltry 18 yards. Ugh.

Week 14 at Boulder Bulldogs

We bounce back with a nice road win over the 4-8 Bulldogs, 17-10. Terrell is game MVP with a 15 for 28, 161-yard perfromance.

Week 15 CONYERS CONDORS
We play Conyers tough again, but fall 2-12 as the Condors improve to 10-4 with a 14-6 win. We contain Bobbitt a bit better this time, although he has 88 yards on 19 carries. (That's better than 14 for 169!)

Week 16 ANAHEIM MATTERHORNS
We get blown out at home, 31-6, in our season's penultimate contest. Terrell has two costly interceptions to marr an otherwise-decent 20 for 33 for 193 yard performance.

Week 17 GEORGIA GRIDLOCK
We fall 16-10 to the Gridlock to finish the year 2-14, tied with Paris for the worst record in the league.

Well, as was expected, a rough season. However, the bright sport is that Terrell is developing rapidly (up to 52/71) and appears to be a guy who can lead the franchise for the next decade or so. 6th-round draft choice RB Romund looks like he could be a very nice player as well, once given a decent offensive line to run behind.

2005 ROSTER SHAPING

FREE AGENCY
There was only one 2nd-year guy out there who I think is worth the time. I offer a 2-year contract to MLB Steven Orosco (22/49), who was Outer Banks' 5(16) pick last year, and he accepts. Orosco was cut by Outer Banks before the regular season, and picked up for two games by Boulder. He's got pretty solid potential across the board. If he can fulfill it, he could be an impact player for us.

AMATEUR DRAFT
I have the #1 pick in the draft, but I feel the need to get more players. North Plainfield, who had the #3 pick, is willing to trade up. I get a very nice collection of picks: 1(3), 2(3), 3(3) and their first-rounder next year. Even better is that they don't get the guy that I had my eye on in the first place! DT Kim Carlson looks like he will be a superstar. He's big, strong and athletic. Here's the draft in its entirety:

POSNAMECURFUTVOLSOL40BENCHAGI

I'm hoping to get several long-term players from this crop. Good to grab a very good punter as well, because we'll still be doing a lot of that this coming season, I am sure.

DRAFT GRADE: C+

LATE FREE AGENCY
With so many guys on the roster, I grabbed no more than one guy at each position group. One guy in particular looks very interesting, QB Thurman Steward. He's rated 17/60, has 88 volatility, High Sol. test, and is outside of the normal combine ranges in both his 40 time (4.51) and agility (7.36).

Very nice breakout for 6th-round pick T Marty Finch. He went from 13/41 in the draft to 36/66 by the end of camp! No other big moves either way. I'll make my cuts to get down to 60, then head to preseason.

2005 SEASON

PRESEASON
I gave QB Steward a couple of starts to help his development along. He might end up being a decent backup. Terrell looked quite good. I think having a receiver like Garrison around is going to prove valuable.

INJURIES OF NOTE: 1st-round pick DT Kim Carlson hyperextended his knee, and begins the regular season listed as "Doubtful." There's no reason to risk it at this point. He will come back when he is 100%, and no sooner

INJURIES OF NOTE
  • QB Terrell was injured in week 1 (sprained elbow tendon) and missed 5 games.
  • RB Eric Rivera
(a backup) suffered a compound leg fracture in Week 14 and was done for the year (and I'd imagine his career).

COMMENTS
The team was much-improved this year, with some surprises. The biggest had to be the play of OLB Everett Linquist. Linquist racked up 99 tackles and 11 sacks on the season to anchor a defense that struggled at times, but led the league in sack yardage. Another highlight was the play of rookie WR Cornelius Garrison.. His 286-yard performance Week 8 against Paris set a league record, and he had over 1,000 yards receiving for the year. Last, but certainly not least, it appears that Jackie Terrell is about to enter his prime. At the end of the year, he is rated 68/72, and he threw for 2,250 yards in 11 games, with a 83.8 QB Rating.

We seem to have taken a large leap forward this season, looking at our record. However, a closer look reveals that we still have a ways to go. Only one of our wins this season came against a team with a winning record. Still, I have to be encouraged. Further, I have two draft picks in round 1 in 2006.

2006 RETIREMENTS/HALL OF FAME

TUCKER RETIREMENTS
None. I expect it'll be a while...

RETIREMENTS AROUND THE LEAGUE
Not a lot to report yet, but because of one player in particular, it is time for me to get this section up and running. RayCo's QB Denver Bell retired. I wish I could have seen him over his entire career. He was generated in 2003 as a 14th-year QB. In three seasons, this is all he did:
  • 98.1 Rating in 48 starts.
  • 11,794 passing yards, including two of the seven 4,000-yard seasons that have been recorded in my league's short history.
  • 3 first-team QB awards.
  • 2 Solecismic MVP Awards
  • 1,103 RUSHING yards, retiring as current #2 rushing QB.
  • Retires as leader in completion percentage, yards, yards per pass, TD's, and QB Rating.
A tip o' the cap to Denver Bell.

Conyers RB Orlando Bobbitt also hung 'em up after his 9th year. I'll be glad not to have to face him any longer. His numbers against us in five games were other-wordly: 87 carries, 677 yards (7.78 ypc), 5 TD's. Good to see you go, don't let the door hit you on the way out, Orlando.

Those are the only two marquee players to retire this year.

HALL OF FAME
Not yet.

And if you're related to John Wayne Bobbitt, then don't let Lorena come through that door with a butcher knife.

2006 ROSTER SHAPING

FREE AGENCY
Two guys caught my eye, and I was able to lock both of them up:
C Luke Fleming--Fleming was Ann Arbor's 3(2) pick in 2004, but was unable to land a starting job. He looks like he could be pretty solid all around for me, and he came cheaply.
G Roosevelt Bradford--Bradford was Rochester's 3(18) pick in '04, and was a two-year starter, but didn't perform all that well. Still, his 44/46 in run blocking is better than anyone I have currently at guard. Unless I draft two stud guards, he'll start for me.

RESTRICTED PLAYERS
I re-sign the following restricted players:
FB D.J. Davis--2yrs
WR Winfred Foreman--3yrs
WR Bryce Flockhart--2yrs
G Bruce Ford--2yrs
G Ian Rayburn--2yrs
T Andre Butler--1yr
DE Kent Castine--2 yrs
DE Jerry Matos--2 yrs
DE Kenny Hallock--2 yrs
ILB Dwayne Burnett--2yrs
OLB Lewis Connell--1yr
CB Antoine Shields--1yr
CB Zack Darusmont--2yrs

KEY FA SIGNINGS IN MY DIVISION
CONYERS
None.

GEORGIA
QB Erasmo Rodrigue--a 6th-year QB with ratings nearly maxed out--ranging from 76-98. They inked him to a five-year deal. He's coming off of an injury, but overall has an 87.2 QB Rating.
WR Terry Chester--an 11-year man who has 3,000 yards in 3 seasons in Chesapeake, Chester was the league's fastest man in 2003, and is a mentor to WR's. The good news for us is that Chester and Rodrigue have an "extreme conflict."

The Gridlock also signed *SEVEN* defensive starters with current ratings <50. They could be dangerous this year.

ORLANDO
The Knights pick up several key players on defense.

AMATEUR DRAFT
I have the 1(12) and 1(13) picks. When my picks roll around, there's only one guy that catches my eye as a pick worthy of that time for my team. (Well, actually there's a studly-looking RB, but without an offensive line yet, what is the point?) At any rate, there's a ball-hawking FS available, so I grab him, and trade down 10 spots in exchange for a 4th-round pick. Here's the draft:

POSNAMECURFUTVOLSOL40BENCHAGI
1(12)S Jake Newhart447986544.50197.02
1(23)OLB Omar Spoon235886234.52267.08

6(12)DE Jonathan Kearse273790294.84297.48
7(12)G Zack Randle183681264.98308.19

The first five picks look like they could all start this year.

DRAFT GRADE: B+

Ack! 2nd-round pick spoon is an immediate bust. However, since I still have so much cap room, I'll go ahead and sign him and see what happens. He's down to 14/33 and he holds out!!! I don't know about this guy.

No one of special note signs here.

OLB Spoon isn't looking good at all. On the other hand, 6th-round pick DE Kearse is showing some signs of life. I'll make sure he gets significant playing time. Also, undrafted CB Scottie England is showing 54-60 potential in run defense, M2M, zone and BNR. I'll be watching him closely as well.

2006 PRESEASON AND FINAL CUTS

PRESEASON
We ran the table in the preseason, going 4-0 against RayCo, Fairbanks, Minnesota and San Luis Obispo. QB Terrell looked very, very good, completing 39 passes in 53 attempts with 2 TD's and 0 INT's. Nice!

INJURIES OF NOTE: No major ones. WR Garrison is Out with a broken clavicle, but should be full strength in 3 weeks.

FINAL CUTS
RB Batts
TE Steussie
C Walker
G Burr
DT Golding
ILB Burnett--starter last year, but signing FA Orosco and draftee Osieja pushed him out
CB Darusmont--starter last year, but didn't play well, and two rookies (England and Dodsworth) have my attention

SEASON OUTLOOK
QB Terrell looks like the real deal, and the rest of the team is starting to come together. The defensive line and secondary really appear to be coming together.

POWER RATING: 46 (worst in AFC)
ROSTER: 2 (worst in NFL)

How are you doing with the salary cap? Maybe it's me, but by year 2 I'm struggling to keep 46 players signed, let along have 53 on the roster.

Well, this is an empty cupboard team, so right now I haven't even used half of the cap.

INJURIES OF NOTE
Very good year for us injury-wise. No major ones--just a handful of starters missing no more than 3-4 games. 15 of my 22 starters played in all 16 games. With a coach VG at injury avoidance, good time in the training room, a young team, and a little luck, even with injuries at 200, they can be very manageable.

COMMENTS
I certainly can't complain. We missed the playoffs on a tiebreaker. Maassluis was 7-5 in the conference, while we were 5-7. The defense really got it done this year, finishing in the league's top 10 against both the rush and the pass. OLB Linquist surprised once again, this time with 84 tackles, 9 sacks, and 10 hurries--not bad for a guy only rated 36/36! Terrell threw for almost 3,500 yards, with 15 TD's and 8 INT's. This team appears to be coming together. The playoffs should be our goal next year.

Another step forward for us. I am particularly pleased with the defensive performance.

Do you create custom gameplans for your games skydog? Or do you have your asst. coaches do it automaticly for you? I know you don't call your own plays, I was just curious about the gameplanning itself.

Also, what difficulty level to you play on? Wall Street?

1. Yes, I create custom game plans. I probably have 25-30 different ones saved. I'll talk a little more about game plans starting next season.

2. Yes. Wall Street. Never have tried the others...

Reading this is making me want to fire up my FOF2004 game again. I told Jim a story. When TCY's was released it was the time my wife went into labor. I downloaded it and had it during those 2 days my wife and I stayed with my newborn in the hospitol. That was the best day of my life. My beautiful daughter was born, my wife was ok and I got to kill time play TCY.... Good memories...

Anyway, I'm interested in seeing how this develops.

2007 ROSTER SHAPING

FREE AGENCY
QB Carl Jackman (37/47)--He was Brooklyn's 2(2) pick in '04, but didn't play an offensive snap in three seasons. He costs more than I think he's worth (3yrs, $5M), but he looks like a decent backup QB at least until I start to have to worry about the cap.
TE Neal Pinto (32/45)--Very limited playing time for 2 years in Fairbanks after being drafted 4(25) in '05. I ink him to a one-year deal. Decent-looking backup TE.

When the 5th-year guys show up next year, free agency should be much more interesting.

RESTRICTED PLAYERS
I re-sign the following restricted players:
RB Romund--3 yrs
WR Arvold--3 yrs
G Rayburn--1yr
T Entman--1yr
MLB Orosco--3yrs
OLB Linquist--3yrs
OLB Takahashi--2yrs
CB Weikel--5yrs, $30M--our first big contract, but he seems to deserve it. He picked off 6 passes last year, returned 2 for TD's, and anchored a very solid secondary. He's also a very punishing hitter back there (90).
CB Sandbery--1yr.

KEY FA SIGNINGS IN MY DIVISION
CONYERS
None.

GEORGIA

ORLANDO

AMATEUR DRAFT
I had the 1(19) pick, but when it rolled around, there were four WR's I wanted, and little else I deemed worthy of that pick, so I traded 1(19) for 2(2) and 3(2), figuring I could get one of the four WR's at 2(2), which I did. Here is the entire draft:

2007 PRE SEASON AND FINAL CUTS

PRESEASON
We ran the table in the preseason, going 4-0 against RayCo, Fairbanks, Minnesota and San Luis Obispo. QB Terrell looked very, very good, completing 39 passes in 53 attempts with 2 TD's and 0 INT's. Nice!

INJURIES OF NOTE: FS Jerald Manley is lost for the season with a torn quad. He is on IR. He wasn't slated to be a starter. Also, MLB Ethan Osieja, who was likely going to get cut, is Out with a strained elbow tendon at the end of the preseason. Although he shoudl be full strength in 8 weeks, I need his roster spot, so he goes on the IR.

FINAL CUTS
QB Ellis
RB Mack
TE Humphrey
WR Shannon
T Fargnoli

SEASON OUTLOOK
We're looking better and better at the skill positions. If the offensive line can come together, we'll move the ball quite well. The defense has a chance to be solid again as well. I hope to earn a playoff spot this year.

POWER RATING: 62 (10th in AFC)
ROSTER: 32 (T25 in NFL)

INJURIES OF NOTE
We suffered our first major injury to key starters. SS Timothy Sampson went out in Week 5 with ACL Damage (16wks). We went to the FA pool to grab a new starter, 3rd-year man Floyd Pearson, who was an undistinguished 2-year starter in Ft. Worth before being cut. We were 4-1 and #14 against the pass when Sampson went down. Then, DT Kim Carlson damaged his MCL in Week 9 (29wks). I'm really hoping against hope that there's no long-term damage from this one. Carlson was rated 84/84 at the time of his injury, and has two more seasons after this one on his contract. We had several more 3-5 game injuries than last year as well, causing some important pieces to be missing at key times. At this point, we're not deep enough to survive missing some big guns.

COMMENTS
After the last 2 seasons, this one was definitely disappointing, despite some bright spots. Losing two of our highest-rated defensive starters certainly hurt, and we dropped from having one of the better defenses around last year to the middle of the pack this year. Offensively, the play of Jackie Terrell and Cornelius Garrison stood out in particular. Terrell led the league in TD passes (29), and Garrison led the league by catching 16 of 'em. Terrell appears to be ready to take his place as one of the league's elite QB's. Linquist continues to perform well at OLB (77tk,18ast,9.5 sacks), and DE Kearse, picked in the 6th round last year, had 50 tackles and 13 sacks. Our biggest liability still appears to be the offensive line, which I intend to continue to focus on improving.

CONTRACT EXTENSIONS
As stated in my house rules, I'll allow myself to offer extensions for players in the final year of their contracts. I normally do this in the postseason. Here are the ones for this year:

DE Jerry Matos--through 2008 for this decent backup/pass-rush specialist
DT Brady Wayne--starter Dupree is rated 0 in pass rush strength, and Wayne is 33/74 in techinque, 34 in strength. He gets another year.

Neither are earth-shattering. I have several key third-year guys in the last year of a contract, but they'll get re-signed next year as restricted players.

FRONT OFFICE BOWL

Fairbanks 15, North Plainfield 14
No big offensive performances in this one. Fairbanks QB Cornelius Hines was a pedestrian 19 for 31 for 194 yards to win game MVP.

Division Champion Georgia won their wild card round matchup, but lost the following week to North Plainfield, 24-14.

Cornelius Garrison was 2nd-Team All League, with 67 catches for 1076 yards and 16 TD's.

WR Chester Arvold was the League's Fastest Man with a blazing 4.25. He was a nice deep threat, catching 3 TD's and having a 20.1 yards per catch average. The problem is this guy can't catch a cold. He dropped 7 of the 38 passes thrown his way.

A disappointment, but there's no reason to believe that things won't improve next year.

2008 ROSTER SHAPING

BEGINNING CAP SITUATION
SALARY CAP: $89M
ROOM UNDER CAP: $45.68M
MAX FOR NEW PLAYER: $40.82M

INJURY UPDATES FROM LAST SEASON
SS Timothy Sampson dropped all the way down to 28/28 (from 57/58) coming off of his ACL damage.
DT Kim Carlson drops down to 54/54 from 81/81.

RESTRICTED PLAYERS
I re-sign the following restricted players:
TE Terrell Haines (68/68)--Three-year starter gets a five-year deal worth $24M.

DE Brian Sullivan (43/65)--Sullivan has yet to play up to his potential (54 tackles and 6 sacks total in 3 seasons), but isn't asking for that much money, either. he gets a three-year deal worth $5.4M.
WR Cornelius Garrison (61/62)--He's been our most reliable receiver, average nearly 60 catches and 1,000 yards, and 10 TD's per season over three years. He gets a 5 year deal worth $33.6M
LT Marty Finch (60/62)--This breakout sixth-rounder has a 1.0 sack percentage and 30.0 KRBpct. He isn't outstanding, but solid at a very important position, and therefore gets the big bucks he's asking for: 5 years, $34.8M.
C Joey Rockett (48/54)--He didn't start last year, but was used in every position on the o-line at one point or another. I'd like to keep him around, at least for a while longer. He gets a 2-year deal worth $3.3M.
CB Scottie England (33/50)--This former undrafted FA has started 14 games in 2 seasons, and been the nickel back. He gets a 3-year deal worth $2.6M.
RT Quinn Gilmore (34/44)--A temporary pickup last year to fill in for an injury. He gets the one-year, no-bonus deal that he was asking for.
CB Dustin Sandberg (25/36)--Another one-year, no-bonus deal.
LT Andre Bacon (26/40)--Backup T gets a two-year, no-bonus deal.
SS Floyd Pearson (36/36)--Was picked up when SS Sampson went down for the year, and started 11 games, with a 19.3 PDPct. Nothing special, but no 5-year-or-under safeties are available via free agency, so I sign him to a three-year deal with a very low bonus as insurance.

P Koenig is asking for a five-year deal, and I don't deem him worthy. There are several punters available in the draft class. I'll get one of 'em.

FREE AGENCY
UPDATED MAX FOR NEW PLAYER: $15.24M

FA-ELIGIBLE STARTERS
G Bruce Ford
G Roosevelt Bradford

Neither one of them has shown me much. I'd just as soon look elsewhere.

PRIORITY POSITIONS TO UPGRADE
RT, RDT, WLB, RCB, SS

FA's SIGNED
LG Josh Collier (50/50)--3yrs,$5.1M--Four-year starter in Boston. All-league in 2006. He could be a steal at this price. Neither stands out nor stinks in any category.
RG Duane Blow (48/51)--3yrs,$4.2M--Started one season in Vicksburg. Has a 0.6 SkPct and is 63/76 in pass blocking.
RT Aaron Osterlund (52/52)--3yrs,$5.2M--He was a 2 1/2 year starter in San Antonio. His biggest strength is his run blocking (72).
RDT Joel Poffenroth (44/56)--3yrs,$3.0M--Has never been a full-time starter, but has decent ratings across the board.
WLB Mo Beach (37/42)--2yrs,$1.6M--Nothing impressive, but better than anyone I have currently at WLB.

RCB Jared Rehberg (66/70)--5yrs,$40M--He's been all-league once ('06), and has a 19.7 career PDPct. I'm hoping that he and Wiekel will anchor the secondary for years.

CUTS TO SAVE CAP ROOM
G Randle--former 7th-rounder is odd man out with two starters being signed
DT Singleton--6th-rounder from last year dropped a point in ratings, and wouldn't have played much, if at all, as the 4th-best RDT on the roster.
WLB Takahashi--undrafted free agent is outta here.

KEY FA SIGNINGS IN MY DIVISION
CONYERS
None.

GEORGIA
None.

ORLANDO
The Knights sign three defensive studs at DE, WLB, and MLB, along with last year's league MVP, RB Karl Fredrickson.

AMATEUR DRAFT
PICKS
I have the 8th pick in all 7 rounds.

NEEDS
No glaring ones (unless you count needing a punter). However, I'm no better than below-average-to-mediocre in a few places. There are several positions where a promising-looking rookie would get the starting nod--most notably SS and OLB. For the most part, I'll be going with BPA this year though.

POSNAMECURFUTVOLSOL40BPAGICOMMENTS
1(8)SS Kim Maxwell377176344.47207.03Everything looks great except vol. Likely to step in and start this year.
2(8)SLB Troy Wisniewski265731334.57257.11If he works out, I'll move him to WLB and start him this year.
3(8)RCB Luke Gomez204836264.48137.06His bar-ratings look very nice, as do his combine numbers.
4(8)P Roger Hudgins567345274.80187.73Needed a punter. Got a good one.
5(8)LDE Joseph Rayburn94365314.82207.26He'd definitely be considered a project player, but has potential.
6(8)RT Dennis Caraway203949235.21347.77Big, strong, agile and relatively fast.
7(8)FL Winfred Lang213178184.42146.93Fastest player remaining, very agile, and strong for his position
No immediate busts or break-outs. Maxwell and Wisniewski should crack the starting lineup this year.

DRAFT GRADE: B+

LATE FREE AGENCY
My back-up FB, 5th-year man D.J. Davis, gets a 2-year, minisal, no bonus deal. Other than him, I sign all first-year players to fill out the roster.

Hate to make you go back a year, but can you tell me what happened to Springfield in the playoffs? In all my careers, I've never seen a 16-0 team. I'd love to find out how they came up short in the playoffs.

Thanks!

2008 PRE SEASON AND FINAL CUTS

PRESEASON
With my best players sitting, we go 0-4 in the preseason.

INJURIES OF NOTE: FL Foreman, slated to be WR3, dislocates his knee in Week 2 and won't be full strength until around Week 4. DT Joel Poffenroth suffers a severe hamstring pull in the penultimate preseason game, and is Out (16 weeks) going into the regular season. I don't put him on the IR, as I hope to make the playoffs and have him active then. I give DE Jack Emmons, last year's 7th-round pick, a position switch to DT. SS Kim Maxwell tears his lateral knee ligament in the final preseason game, and is Out (11 weeks).

FINAL CUTS
RB Herbert
T Bacon
MLB Osieja
OLB Alcott
CB Marshall
TE Bauman
FL Lang

SEASON OUTLOOK FOR OUR DIVISION
CONYERS (PR: 61)
QB Tony Matte returns or his fourth season leading the Condors. They are quite strong at the offensive skill positions, but just average on the offensive line. Still, with WR's Cary Doty and Michael McClellan, Matte looks to put up solid numbers. The defense looks decent, but nothing special either. The best player is OLB James Hernandez (71/71).

GEORGIA (PR: 74)
The Gridlock are led by QB Ersamo Rodrigue (86/86), one of the best around. He has decent receivers to throw to, but a horrid running game. The o-line has stars in C James Campbell (97/97) and G Jarod Phillips (84/84), but the rest of the line is young and suspect. The defense is very solid up front and at LB's, but suspect in the secondary. They are defending division champs.

ORLANDO (PR: 58)
The Knights will start a third-year undrafted FA at QB in Jorge Iadevaia (27/55). Hit hard by injuries in the preseason, they start the regular season with no healthy offensive player with a current rating higher than 50. Barring injury, they should be the strongest defensive team in the division.

As far as our team goes, if we can stay relatively healthy we look, on paper, to be the best overall team in the division.

POWER RATING: 78 (Tied for 1st in AFC with Boston)
ROSTER: 68 (13th in NFL. San Luis Obispo is #1)

INJURIES OF NOTE
SS Maxwell dropped to 28/53 upon his return from the preseason injury. QB Terrell suffers ACL damage in the 15th regular season game, and is listed Out (14 weeks). Here's hoping for a full recovery! DT Carlson suffers the second severe knee injury of his career in the same game. This time he's gonna have ACL surgery, and is listed as being out for 64 weeks.

COMMENTS
A *very* frustrating season this was. Six losses by three points or less, (including two to division rival Georgia), and a major injury to our QB at the end. For the first 14 1/2 games, Terrell to Garrison was well-nigh unstoppable. Despite only throwing 464 times, Terrell eclipsed the 4,000-yard mark, and Garrison caught 91 of 'em for 1548 yards and 8 TD's. Lots of bad breaks at bad times. I can't help but wonder if our low cohesion is the biggest problem we have, because things looked pretty good overall. WR Garrison broke his own single-game receiving yards record with his 301-yard performance against the Gridlock.

2009 ROSTER SHAPING

BEGINNING CAP SITUATION
SALARY CAP: $92.3M

ROOM UNDER CAP: ($910K)
MAX FOR NEW PLAYER: ($5.11M)

INJURY UPDATES FROM LAST SEASON
QB Terrell keeps his 74/74 rating, and is fully healed. I franchised him, which is why I'm over the cap heading into free agency.
DT Carlson is going to miss the entire season, but hasn't lost any more ratings...... yet.

CUTS/CAP OUTS
Gotta free up some money...

CUTS
OLB Spoon--1st-round bust from '06 gets the axe in the final year of his contract.
S Sampson--I hate to do it, but the former Defensive Rookie Of The Year just isn't worth his $1M salary any more since his ACL injury.

CAP OUTS
CB Rehberg
T Finch
WR Garrison

The above moves give me $8.97M with which to sign restricted players and FA's.

RESTRICTED PLAYERS
DE Jonathan Kearse--He's been a three-year starter, averaging right at 40 tackles and 9 sacks per season. He gets a 3-year deal worth $4.5M.

MLB Allen Bronson--He's been a solid backup, and his ratings are climbing. He gets a 2-year deal worth $2.1M.
CB Brant Lyle--1yr,$530K,no bonus

FREE AGENCY
UPDATED MAX FOR NEW PLAYER: $5.89M

FA-ELIGIBLE STARTERS
None. I could stand pat with last year's team, but I'd like to have at least an upgrade or two.

FA's SIGNED
LDT Andrew Dillon (53/62)--3yrs,$3.9M--Dillon was Gothenburg's 1(30) pick in 2004. In five seasons, he has 170 tackles and 25.5 sacks. With LDT Carlson out for this year as well (and in the last year of his contract), Dillon is a perfect fit.
CB Dustin Sandberg (31/37)--2yrs,$1.69M--He's been with us for four seasons, and signs a no-bonus deal to stay.
SS Andre Flannery (53/54)--3yrs,$2.8M--An upgrade at strong safety, another position that was hurt by injuries. He was a 3-year starter for Georgia. Career 19.2 PDPct. He's already a mentor to safeties!

KEY FA SIGNINGS IN MY DIVISION
CONYERS
The Condors picked up four defensive starters, including three in the secondary. The best is CB Bill Tonkin (71/71), who was with Georgia for his entire four-year career. Tonkin had a very good year in '08, picking off 8 passes, running 2 back for TD's, and breaking up 12 others. The Condors should improve on defense

GEORGIA
The two-time defending Division Champs didn't add any stars, but did sign 7 players rated in the 40's, who look like they'll fill in some holes.

ORLANDO
None.

AMATEUR DRAFT
PICKS

I have the 19th pick in all 7 rounds.

NEEDS
No glaring ones. The AI says the order of priority is OLB, RB and ILB. Those would probably be the top three, but WLB is the only one that stands out to me.

POSNAMECURFUTVOLSOL40BPAGICOMMENTS
1(19)SS Gino Greer447938424.39207.00Wouldn't have signed FA Flannery if I'd thought Greer'd fall this far.
2(19)RT Trevor Foreman223989405.22317.76I think he's gonna be better than advertised.
3(19)LG Albert Tubbs174711395.06267.73Pretty solid-looking in both run and pass blocking.
4(19)QB Don Bronson244824324.86147.33I like everything about this kid.
5(19)RB Dexter Watkins324053294.59197.33Best RB available.
6(19)WLB Ray Blake163426344.66187.35Another guy to add to the mix at WLB.
7(19)TE Ike Lyons214567184.90257.40Pretty decent-looking for a 7th-rounder.

Lyons drops six points in future potential immediately, and Blake drops five.. No biggie since they were late-rounders. The other five stay pretty much the same. Greer should be an immediate starter.

DRAFT GRADE: A (Hmmm.....I wonder if the computer knows something that I don't about some of these guys...)

LATE FREE AGENCY
Just first-year players to fill out the roster.

2009 PRESEASON/ FINAL CUTS/OUTLOOK

PRESEASON INJURIES OF NOTE
C Dexter Kemp--separated shoulder in Week 2--Questionable (3wks) Week 1
QB Don Bronson--strained deltoid in Week 2--Probable (2wks) Week 1 (bummer because I wanted him to get experience in preseason)
FB Davis--dislocated shoulder in Week 3--Out (3wks) Week 1
DT Dillon--broken arm in Week 3--Out (6wks) Week 1
DT Dupree--broken wrist in Week 4--Out (6wks) Week 1

FINAL CUTS
Note: The roster I listed above had 65 active players on it. I cut five insignificant young guys before the preseason. These are just the final seven cuts.
QB Perez
LG Schwartz
DE Rayburn
OLB Blake
SS Sklenicka
SS Maxwell--1st-round pick last year--got injured and lost 20+ points immediately, and dropped 10+ more this year.
FS Gaines

SEASON OUTLOOK FOR OUR DIVISION
CONYERS (PR: 54)
QB Tony Matte (55/55) got injured in the preseason, and is gonna need ACL surgery. He'll miss the entire season, and his best receiver, Michael McClellan (71/71) is out for 15 weeks with a torn quad. The Condors still have a solid offensive line, and RB Rich McNutt (54/54) gained over 2,000 yards total in his first two seasons, before missing 10 games last year due to injury. McNutt is going to have to have a big year for the Condors offense to impress. As mentioned above, they grabbed four defensive starters in free agency, and now have no starter on defense rated lower than 42 current. They should be able to stop some people.

GEORGIA (PR: 72)
Ersamo Rodrigue (87/87) returns to lead this offense. They could have an improved running game with the signing of RB Marco Amos. They plugged some holes with FA's, and should be a threat to win a third straight division title.

ORLANDO (PR: 59)
Undrafted FA QB in Jorge Iadevaia (47/57) struggled last year, but gained valuable experience. They drafted WR Monty Lundberg (53/78) in the first round, and TE Kenny Small (48/65) in the 2nd. Both will start, and could give the Knights a solid passing game. The o-line is solid up the middle, and RB Karl Fredrickson (56/59) is a former MVP. Defensively, they're quite strong up front, below average at LB's, and solid in the secondary.

It should be a tough division, but at least on paper, we're the favorites if we can stay healthy.

POWER RATING: 85 (1st in AFC)
ROSTER: 100 (Tied with Stillawater)

INJURIES OF NOTE
LCB Lester Weikel tore his rotator cuff in week 3, and missed the rest of the regular season. He is Probable (1wk) for our first playoff game, and will return.

RCB Jared Rehberg had to have ACL surgery due to an injury Week 6. This is a big ol' 49-week injury. His contract becomes a real concern now, as I capped him out last year.

RB Romund dislocated his elbow during Week 14, and is Questionable for our first playoff game.

COMMENTS
Woohoo!!! We finally were able to put it together and push into the playoffs. Not surprisingly, the two main stories offensively are the running game (2,057 yards, 4.36ypc), and Terrell-to-Garrison. Garrison caught 76 passes for 1297 yards and 6 TD's, leading the league in receiving yards, and accounting for almost three times more than any of my other receivers. Terrell had another stellar year, turning in a 98.6 QB Rating, throwing for 3,682 yards with 27 TD's and 9 INT's. We led the league with 404 points scored. The defense was in the middle of the pack, but good enough.

REST OF DIVISION

CONYERS

The Condors' offense was about as bad as I expected, averaging only 13.0 ppg (league worst). The defense was 1st in ypc allowed, and 11th in yards per pass attempts allowed, but that wasn't enough to overcome the horrid offense. They finished 3-13. McNutt rushed for 899 yards. The only standout performance was from OLB James Hernandez, last year's Defensive POY, and a candidate for this year's award. He racked up 127 tackles, 39 assists, and 4 sacks.

GEORGIA

FA signee RB Marco Amos started 16 games, but only got 190 carries for 696 yards, and their great QB Rodrigue missed five games. He was stellar when he was out there (16 TD's, 4 INT's), but the rest of the team (particularly the rushing defense--30th in the league) stunk it up as they fell to 5-11.

ORLANDO

The Knights now appear to be a team on the rise. QB Iadevaia started to put it together in this, his fourth season, throwing for 3,489 yards and an 87.7 QB rating. Former MVP RB Karl Frederickson is a candidate again. He was 2nd in the league with a career-high 1,704 rushing yards, and also caught 46 passes. Rookie WR Lundberg looks like he's gonna be a stud, and began his career with 60 catches for 951 yards. The defense was 13th against the run, and 9th against he pass. They went 7-8-1.

San Antonio (11-4-2) at Tucker (11-5) (-1)
SAN ANTONIO VOLUNTEERS OVERVIEW
The Volunteers come to town for our first-ever playoff game. San Antonio was led most of the year by 8th-year QB William Rogers (88/88). Rogers has compiled a 70-39-3 record as a starter, and has won All-Pro honors once. He missed 6 games due to injury this year, and was replaced during that time by Trevor Naquin (37/43). Naquin was 4-2 as a starter this year, but struggled to a 65.9 QB Rating. Rogers is listed as "Probable" for this one, although he didn't play last week. The feature a balanced attack (7th in rushing, 6th in passing), and spread it around very well. Their leading receiver was SE Troy Neal (64/64), who had 64 catches for 756 yards, but 8 different receivers caught 20 or more passes. Three different backs had 350+ yards for them. RB Donovan Meier (63/63) led the way with 932 yards in 16 starts, but RB Duane Hodges (60/60) got his share of carries as well (146, for 662 yards). The defense is anchored by DT Jose Boudreuax (62/62). Boudreaux had 65 tackles, 9 sacks, and 13 hurries for the year. He is Questionable for this one, with elbow bursitis. The Vols were sixth against the rush, and 24th against the pass.

TUCKER INJURY REPORT
As for us, RB Romund is questionable (2 wks), but will play. DT Carlson and CB Rehberg are on the IR, and no one else is worse than probable. (SIDE NOTE: Injuries are too high at 200???? You gotta be kidding me...)

STRATEGY
With our feature back hurting, and San Antonio's defense being vulnerable to the pass, I decided to go with a balanced offensive attack for this one. Similarly, with San Antonio being able to move the ball through the air and on the ground, the defense has got to stay honest. We won't tilt it either way.

GAME RESULTS
San Antonio took the opening possession from their 20, and gained two first downs before shutting down on their own 43. DT Poffenroth blocked the punt, DT Dillon recovered, and we were in "bidness" at the San Antonio 31. Three Romund runs, and one Terrell-to-Kripper pass, got us down to the 1, where backup RB Dexter Watkins took it in for the score with 8:30 to play in the first quarter. The Vols answered rather quickly with a 5-play, 64-yard drive, culminated by a 45-yard TD pass from William Rogers. On our next possession, we moved the ball across midfield before stalling at the Vols' 45. Hudgins' punt bottled 'em up at their 11, and there they stayed after a 3-and-out. Their punter got them out of a tough spot with a 55-yarder that we couldn't return, and we had it on our 34 to begin the 2nd quarter. We then embarked on an efficient 10-play drive that took almost six minutes. Romund carried five times for 30 yards, including the 11-yard TD run to end the drive, and Terrell was 3 for 3 for 24 yards. Rogers began the Vols' next possession with a 40-yard completion, followed by a 25-yarder, and just like that, they were on our 20. The defense stiffened right there, and Wisniewski sacked Rogers on 3rd and 10, and they settled for a 45-yard FG to bring the score to 14-10. Our next possession was a 10-play, 80-yard TD drive in which Terrell hit several key passes. On third and seven from our 23, he found Kripper for 11 yards. On 2nd and 10 from our 34, he connected with Kripper again for 35 yards. On third and eight from the Vols' 29, Garrison made the catch for 16 yards. Romund took it in from seven yards out, and we led 21-10 with around 90 seconds to play in the half. The Vols were unable to move the ball on the next possession, and the half ended right there. San Antonio pulled to 21-17 in the thrid quarter, but then 17 unanswered points finished 'em off. The Vols scored with 25 seconds to play to make the final tally 38-24.

NOTABLE STATS
Terrell: 16 for 21, 252 yards, 2 TD's, 0 INT's.
Romund: 25 carries, 129 yards, 2 TD's
We had 37 carries for 172 yards on the day.
The defense sacked Rogers 5 times, but he put up some pretty big numbers: 22 for 39, 380 yards, 2 TD's, 0 INT's.

NEW INJURIES OF NOTE
None.

NEXT UP: Vicksburg (13-3-1). We are 3-point underdogs on the road.

2009 PLAYOFFS--Part 2

CONFERENCE FINALS
Ann Arbor 11, Astoria 18

Tucker (12-5) at Vicksburg (13-3-1) (-3)
VICKBURG VIPERS OVERVIEW
The Vipers went out and signed QB Emory Hamilton (68/68) to a seven-year deal in free agency this year, and they were rewarded with a stellar season: 310 for 491, 3,589 yards, 25 TD's, 10 INT's, 93.6 Rating. Hamilton had been the backup to Rodrigue in Georgia for the three seasons prior. His primary target was WR Grant Pender (55/55), a 2-time All-Pro who had 63 catches for 937 yards and 7 TD's. However, Pender was injured in the next-to-last game of the season, and his career may be over due to ACL surgery. He will miss all of next season, it appears. No other Viper WR caught 40 passes, or had 500 yards receiving. RB Doug Larimer (40/40) benefitted from running behind a solid offensive line, to the tune of 1,310 yards and 9 TD's. The Vipers led the league in rushing attempts and rushing yards, and featured an offensive line with no starter having worse than a 60 rating. However, LT Kent Bangs (60/60) will miss this one, as he is Out with a strained elbow tendon. His replace is only rated 21/46, but their line will still be very strong. The Viper defense was probably the best in the league: 4th overall against the rush, 2nd overall against the pass, and allowed the league's lowest PPG (13.4). They had no one put up super numbers, and have no superstar-rated guys, but are just good all around, and all of their starters are healthy for this one. If they have a defensive weakness, it is on the right side of the defensive line (RDT: 33/34, RDE 44/44).

TUCKER INJURY REPORT
DT Carlson and CB Rehberg are on the IR, and no one else is worse than probable. DE Sullivan is questionable but will play. No one else is worse than Probable.

STRATEGY
On offense, I'm going to try to run at their right side (my left), behind LG Josh Collier (63 run blocking), LT Marty Finch (62), and TE Haines (75). With their leading WR out, I'll be gearing up defensively to stop the run.

GAME RESULTS
The first quarter was a scoreless defensive struggle. our best chance to score came on our first possession, when Dodsworth was wide right on a 44-yard FG. Vicksburg got no closer than our 41 in the first quarter.

The second quarter began with a key turnover on the second play. CB Weikel picked off a Hamilton pass, and returned it 18 yards to the Vicksburg 30. Seven plays later, Terrell hit Garrison for a 4-yard TD pass, and we led 7-0 with 12:03 to go in the half. An unneccessary roughness penalty on the ensuing drive moved the Vipers up near midfield, but they stalled right around there and punted for a touchback. A 12-play, 58 yard drive from there netted a FB, and we led 10-0 with 5:08 to go. Vickburg's next possession ended with a big sack by Keaese on 3rd and 10 from our 34, but their punter then pinned us at our own four. We were unable to do anything form there, and after a punt, Vicksburg was back in business with 1:24 to play on our 43. They were able to cash in with a FG with 24 seconds left in the half, and we went into the tunnel leading 10-3.

The third quarter featured lots of defense. OLB Wisniewski blocked a punt for us, and backup CB Brant Lyle recovered in the end zone for a TD and a 17-3 lead with 9:39 to play in the quarter. There were only a combined five first downs gained by both teams in this quarter--four of them on Vicksburg's final possession of the quarter. The quarter ended with them on our 24.

The fourth quarter began with the Vipers finishing that drive off, culminating with a 5-yard TD pass with 12:06 to play that cut the lead to 17-10. From there, each team was stopped twice by the other's defense. The game was winding down when we took possession after a short punt on the Vicksburg 44, with 2:53 to play. Four plays later, Terrell hit Garrison for a 27-yard TD with 2:29 to play, which pretty much put this one on ice. Vicksburg scored again, but we took possession after the failed onsides kick, and ran out the clock for a 24-17 win!

NOTABLE STATS
We carried 39 times for 106 yards, with Romund leading with 69 yards.
DE Jonathan Kearse had a very strong game: 6 tackls, 2 assists, 2 sacks.
Neither team had 300 total yards of offense.

NEW INJURIES OF NOTE
FS Jake Newhart suffered a high ankle sprain, and RG Duane Blow a severe wrist sprain. Both are Out for the Front Office Bowl.

NEXT UP: Astoria (12-6). We are 1-point underdogs.

2009 FRONT OFFICE BOWL

Tucker (13-5) at Astoria (13-4-1) (-1)
ASTORIA HEROES OVERVIEW
The Heroes are led by 4th-year QB Kim Stuart (65/65). In this second year as a starter, he threw for 2,600 yards with 17 Td's and 11 INT's, good for a 79.3 QB Rating. No receiver stood out. The best numbers on the team were posted by 11th-year man, WR Gregory Lovins (49/49)--64 catches, 831 yards, 2 TD's. The Heroes' running game was rather pedestrian as well, averaging 3.63 ypc, and led by 2nd-year back Joel Clemons (46/46), who had 1,075 yards, 4 TD's and 3.7ypc. Astoria's defense, on the other hand, was first against the rush, 15th against the pass, and first in turnovers. They play a 3-4, and were good all around. No one had more than 71 tackles for them. However, their best player, SILB David Tye (83/83) is Out with a hyperextended knee. Their defense still looks quite strong. They've allowed only 28 points in two playoff games.

TUCKER INJURY REPORT
RG Blow and FS Newhart are Out. No one else (besides the two IR guys) is worse than probable. Third-year man RG Clyde Bauer (27/48) will start for Blow. Bauer was 7 for 20 in KRB's this year, with 3 sacks allowed in 183 pass plays. SS Andre Flannery (53/53), the FA I signed who didn't start a game this year because of rookie Gino Greer, will start at FS.

CONTRACT EXTENSIONS
I need to go ahead and do these, since they can't be done after the Front Office Bowl. The following starters/key-players will be FA-eligible next season:

FS Jake Newhart (80/80)--I'm nervous to re-sign him with that high ankle sprain. If he heals fully, I'll go after him on the open market.
QB Jackie Terrell (74/74)---We have about $11M in cap room available next year, which is right around what he made this year. He wants $17M in cap room next season. With cuts and cap outs, I think I can make that happen, so I give him the big contract he is asking for. It lasts through 2014.
WLB Mo Beach (58/58)--He had 77 tackles from WLB this year, and only wants a modest salary. I give him a deal for 2 more seasons.
C Joey Rockett (57/57)--With the emergence of C Dexter Kemp (46.0 Pct. this year), I'll let him become a FA.
DT Kim Carlson (55/55)--He missed the entire season with ACL surgery. I can't give him an extension not knowing how bad he'll be.
MLB Steven Orosco (51/53)--He had 81 tackles, and a career-high 10 sacks this year, and wants a reasonable amount. He gets four more years.
DE Jerry Matos (49/49)--Has been a good backup and pass-rush specialist throughout his 6 years with us. Had 27 tackles, 4 sacks adn 5 hurries this year. He gets one more year.
QB Carl Jackman (42/42)--Didn't play at all this year as backup QB, but we could use him in a pinch, plus he wants less money than this year to re-sign. He gets another year.
RB Danny Romund (46/46)--After 6 seasons and 6,000 rushing yards, it is probably tiem to part company with this former 6th-round draft choice. Right now he's asking for more than I'm willing to pay a player of his rather modest skills.
FB D.J. Davis (41/41)--Backup FB keeps asking for no-bonus contracts, so I keep re-signing him.
WR Chester Arvold (37/37)--Still was an effective big-play threat this year, catching only 10 passes, but for 234 yards and 2 TD's. He's asking for less than he made this year, so he'll be back for year 7.
OLB Everett Linquist (35/37)--Finally time to part company with this former over-achiever

STRATEGY
Against a team with no glaring strengths or weaknesses, I'm going back to my original plan for the season: run first, pass when necessary. Astoria relied on turnovers all year. Hopefully we can avoid them.

GAME RESULTS
Astoria picked up one first down on their first possession before stalling. We were penalized for an illegal block on the punt return, and were pushed back to our 45. Terrell hit Garrison for 30 yards on the first play from scrimmage, and that drive ended up setting up a 46-yard FG with 7:54 to play in the quarter. Astorio drove to midfield on the next possession, but DE Sullivan and DT Dillon came up with a big sack that stopped the drive, and we were coffin-cornered down to our own 6, where we went 3-and-out. The Heroes had great field position on their own 49 as the first quarter came to an end.

However, on the first play of the quarter, RB Clemons fumbled and DT Poffenroth fell on it to give us the ball at our own 39. We moved down to the 15 before being forced to kick another FB for a 6-0 lead with 9:17 to play in the half. Astoria's next possession ended with a Wisniewski sack on 3rd and 3, and we got the ball on our 24 after the punt. Terrell hit WR3 Winfred Foreman for 44 yards on 2nd and 7, and we were knocking on the door once again. However, the next play would haunt us for the rest of the day: Terrell hit a short pass to Pate, but was injured and would not return. The drive stalled right there, and Dodsworth kicked a 45-yard FG to give us a 9-0 lead with 2:43 to play. After a 3-and-out by Astoria, we got the ball on our 26 with 1:01 to play in the half. Jackman found Garrison for a big 48-yard gain on the first play from there, which got us in range for a 34-yard FG with 12 ticks to go in the half. We went into halftime leading 12-0.

Our opening possession of the second half resulted in a 3-and-out, and Astoria took over on their 31 after the punt. They moved into our territory, but OLB Wisniewski picked off a pass at our 25 to end the drive. On the next play, however, SE Kripper ran a reverse, but fumbled. When the dust cleared, it had been returned to our 19. Four plays later, the score was 12-7, and the battle was joined. We were penalized for tripping on the KO return, and had to start from our 12. Romund ran a sweep for 25 yards, but Jackman fumbled on a QB draw on the next play, giving the Heroes the ball on our 38. The defense stiffened, and they missed a 47-yard FG, so we dodged a bullet. To begin the next possession, Jackman hit TE Haines on two straight passes for 22 yards total, putting us in Hero territory. A six-yard Romund run, and a 9-yard Jackman-to-tripper pass got us closer, and Dodsworth hit his fifth FG with 2:28 to play in the quarter, giving us a 15-7 lead. The quarter ended with Astoria on the move, sitting on our 33-yard line after back-to-back Stuart completions that totaled 44 yards.

Four plays into the quarter, Stuart hit Clemons for a 15-yard TD pass, and then they passed for the 2-point conversion, tying the game with 13:36 to play. For the rest of regulation, neither team was able to cross midfield, and the Front Office Bowl went into overtime!

Astoria won the toss, elected to receive, and went on an 11-play, 55-yard drive that culminated with a 42-yard FG for the win.

NOTABLE STATS
Astoria RB Joel Clemons was named MVP, with 32 carries for 98 yards, and 9 catches for 83 yards and a TD.
QB Jackman was only 7 for 17 off the bench.
Romund carried 19 times for 88 yards.
OLB Wisniewski had a monster game: 11 tackles, 1 sack, 1 INT.
Neither team had 300 total yards of offense.

NEW INJURIES OF NOTE
QB Terrell's injury was minor--a strained calf muscle that would have only kept him out one more week, but was enough to probably cost us a title.
Nickel CB Scottie England is Out (28 wks) with a torn quad.

A disappointing loss in the finale, but otherwise I am thrilled to have made the playoffs for the first time in this career.

To those reading:

I'd like some feedback regarding the level of detail I'm putting in my posts. I haven't done a dynasty in quite some time, and I'm including a lot of info that I haven't before, mainly due to the ease of copying and pasting HTML code now with WYSIWYG. Let me know what y'all think. One thing: I seriously doubt I'll ever do game-by-game recaps during the regular season again, so don't bother asking for that --particularly with the HTML reports giving the statistics leaders for each game.
