Jamal Lewis Indicted on cocaine distribution charges

... dating from 2000.

I guess there's something about being one of the best single-season rushers of all time that leads to trouble with the law. OJ, Jamal... Ouch

OK, best Keith Hernandez-style joke about running between the white lines wins...a date with Fritz.

The Ravens seem to have a problem with their players being arrested for crimes.

Hey, Michael Irvin only used the stuff for ehrm... fun and leisure. Even Irvin was smart enough to realize that when you get an NFL salary and endorsements, there's no reason to sell drugs. What the hell is wrong with these athletes. You do that crap when you don't have da dough!

Isn't this bad? Like, jail-time bad? Not just caught with possession... but actually distributing the stuff?

Depending on the amount, BIG jail time fan. Then again, he's a celebrity, so he'll probably get off pretty lightly.

Your average citizen, on the other hand, would be looking at decades.

Yes, it's a lot worse than being charged with posession.

Well, guilty or not, Jamal ain't completely stupid.

From the ajc.com story at
http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/met...4/26lewis.html

Jamal Lewis has turned to (Ed) Garland and his partner, Don Samuel, the same two lawyers who represented Ray Lewis during the 2000 trial.

And to be honest, here's the reminder that makes this look awfully bad to me in terms of his possible guilt.

" During that 2001 season, Lewis was suspended four games after violating the NFL's substance and alcohol-abuse policy. At the time, the league said Lewis would lose four game checks.

I don't believe the NFL releases details about particular substances but the timing of this is a little close for comfort IMO.

I wonder if "intent" to distribute, and then never really going through with it is nearly as bad as actually distributing it. If I remember correctly, Nate Newton got caught with the stuff in his car right? (I think he's still in jail).

There is NO way, I mean no way this celeb will get jail time. And might I say what a joke our justice system is if he doesn't get jail time. I mean they have him on his damn cell phone!

Who was that one Dallas Cowboy O-Lineman who was caught with a van full of pot? I think it happened a couple of years ago...or late 90s. Can't quite recall...

Intent to distribute, I'm guessing. I guess most sports players aren't in the best shape financially during/after their career.

EDIT: Guess that's what a 'General Education' degree does for those athletes who graduated. (No offense to anyone who actually one!)

I don't think Cocaine has the same minimum-sentencing guidelines crack does, but getting busted for distribution is probably not a good thing.

More information is emerging... It sounds like it was Lewis's friend who was trying to get the drugs to sell them, and Lewis is accused of helping him, apparently by taking a call on his cell phone. The drugs were never actually purchased.

If Lewis was just a guy taking a phone call, I can't see him going down hard for this. Wouldn't surprise me if they just used him to testify against his pal.

Just a snippet from another article.....Williams was number 20 on the Boys. Emmitts backup.

"Williams was convicted and pleaded guilty to drug trafficking and counterfeiting charges. In March he was sentenced to the maximum 15 years and eight months in prison."

From what I heard on the news this morning, it sounds like Lewis has a good chance to get off. It was entrapment because a snitch contacted Lewis about the offer and encouraged to do the entire deal. It sounds like Lewis had no plans on selling drugs anytime soon but this informer pushed him into the deal. I think the snitch was his good friend too. So maybe he thought he was just helping out someone he grew up with. Lewis never paid or picked up any drugs but the 5 year statute of limitations is running out so the law is going through with the charge.

The headline was far more damning than the facts. I think they will not get beyond the fact that no drugs were ever purchased. We are going to punish him for considering committing a crime, but deciding in the end it wasn't worth the risk? If that's the case, a whole lot more people need to be in jail.

I think Lewis' friend did purchase the drugs. If so, and Lewis helped facilitate the crime then he was part of the conspiracy. If Lewis had purchased then he would have different charges.

If no one purchased the drugs, then this is a tough case.
