Breaking Away: The rookie racers take flight

As I'm sure almost everyone has read, Gold101 has an excellent dynasty rolling with the Cup level racing series using NASCAR 2002. What I am about to begin, is an idea I've had for a bit. The reason its taken me so long to actually go with it is that it does take quite a bit of administration, record keeping and such, so this may be a bit sporadic to begin with.

I'm going to run through a few seasons to tweak things before asking for additional players from here (hopefully someone will be interested)

The scene:
Players are owners of a startup race team at the lowest level of NASCAR, the regional racing series. The drivers are raw recruits with bare minimum statistics. As each entry comes into the league there is a 10% chance of each stat being higher or lower than the basic (40min - 60max). each driver is checked prior to the beginning of their first season. If a stat qualifies for a rise, or a drop the change is made randomly (1-10 points) so for example: driver A rolled a 96 for his consistancy rating, so the max rises 7 points (rolled a 7) so his starting Cons rating would be 40min - 67max, giving him a very slight advantage.

as the season is played out, drivers gain experience for each race. the winner gets 5 points to add to their stats, the 2nd place car 4 down to 1 for 5th place. no-one else gains points. These points get added between that race and the next one.

At the end of the season things get sorted out.
Sponsorships: No-one starts with a full time sponsor, having a full time sponsor adds 10% to the chance your driver has of moving up to the next level at the end of each year. To figure out the chance for each car to get a full time sponsor, I total up the following:

Series Champion: 10%
Race win: 5%

Each car then gets a roll to see if they got a sponsor for the next season (even those cars who did not win anything the previous year could still roll (00) aka 100 on the percentile dice and gain a sponsor.)

Also at the end of each year there is the chance for drivers to advance to the next level of racing aka moving up and out of this league. to find the percent chance of leaving for hte next level I add the following:

Series Champion: 10%
Full Time Sponsor: 10%
Race Win: 1%

Again even those cars without wins or sponsors have that 1 percent shot at making the move. Drivers that move up are basically "retired" from this league and a new rookie is able to move in. the first season was run with 16 teams, and I also decided to give a 10% chance each year that more drivers than 16 might be available, for season 2 its the same set as season 1.

I'll post the final standings of seaon 1 in a reply.

Once I have the system in place and a good way to display the data, i will ask for 1 or 2 volunteers to be owners each season as spaces open up. this way I will have a ready stock of vets in the system for the new owners to race against.

Wish me luck =)

Here is the rundown of season 1. I am hoping in the long run to create a system of racing series that will eventually give players (active ones like you guys) the chance to be an owner in the racing world, complete with financial monitoring and staffing of the race team and driver, et al. So here goes the first season:

It looked like the season would be over right from the start as the first two races were run back to back at Bristol Motor Speedway. The fastest half mile was tamed by rookie driver Scott Marconi. He won the first event with a solid run, and totally dominated the field in the second event, lapping every car.

Week three began the same way, but late in therace marconi faltered and Josh Perry took the checkers. The season flowed quickly after this with three drivers grabbing double wins and a total of seven of our 16 rookies taking home a winner's paycheck. Though there were some talks of jackson Lewis and his Quaker State team getting called up to another series, no-one advanced this season.

Final Standings:

weird, anyone know why my table would cause such a huge gap in the post?

Season 2 will be run over the next few days and I will start posting actual race results (if I can keep it from acting like this last one.....bizaar)

Are you using the WYSIWYG editor? I had the same kind of problem using it.

Ren, make sure that when you put the table code in there you try to eliminate as many carriage returns as you can. something like:

*table*
*tr*
*td*

would result in some br tags being inserted (something the board does). I had these issues when starting out in my (long dormant) Tequilas dynasty before I figured it out.

Race 2 was back at Bristol Motor Speedway, the fastest half mile in racing. 33,000 fans were scattered throughout the stands as the cars practiced and lined up for the race here in Tennessee. Series leader Josh Perry Started on the Pole but faded late. Del Takoya used a late race caution to gain track position and held off a hard charging #13 car to take his first checkered flag.

Race 3: Dover, the "Monster Mile"

It looked like miss Sarah Finklestein would become the first woman to win a race at the regional level, she dominated exactly one half the race until caught by a lightning fast #13 of Carl Sontag. Sontag put his Sobe sponsored car out front on lap 41 and never looked back.

Race 4 took us out to the Napa valley to run Infineon raceway a 2.66 mile road course favored by the Nextel Cup series.

This race would have been a laugher, except for one small situation with 3 laps to go. josh Perry had put himself out front and led every single lap, but on lap 20 coming through the start finish line josh felt something go. "It just went flat..the engine stopped pulling hard, it was running but boy I sure felt its death pangs as I came up that hill"

Surely enough his engine had broken internally and was barely able to keep the car moving at about half speed. Even so, he managed to hold off a furious charge by runner-up Marcus Jordan, who was one lap short of stealing this voctory away.

All better, thanks for letting me know. I always use the yellow version so I don't see how it looks in others.

Yeah, that's why I try to stay away from text-coloring now. I used to use the yellow too and when I switched to Sideline, I went to my dynasties and couldn't read some of the text.

Week 6 through 15: The day the track stood still....

Well I was doing well with my race by race recaps, I had intended to do 5 races at a time and update the standings, but I screwed something up and lost the files =(. I DO however have the final standings and can give you a rough sumnation of what happened through the end of the season.

Things stayed pretty stabel for both Josh perry and jackson Lewis. They ran well week in and week out staying at the top of the standings most of the year. Perry staked his claim to the class of the field early and never looked back. He easily went on to the championship in season 2.

At the end of the year everyone expected rumors of Perry and Jacksons movement up into the ASA division, but it didn't happen. however, two of thier competitors DID in fact strike deals to move up to the next level of racing. We'll see how they fair after a few more seasons of the regionals.

Elevating to ASA:
#13 Carl Sontag and his SoBe Sponsored Chevrolet Monte Carlo
#36 Delaney Takoya in his Taco Bell Sponsored Chevrolet Monte Carlo

I'm thinking at this point season 5 will be the first one that I take active owners from FOFC. the base set of drivers I have now will have about 55 races (or so) under their belts, letting them build up some statistical gains over rookie drivers coming into the series. This will lead to new players being in this series for a few seasons before random chance gets them boosted up into the ASA.

As I play this out and enough drivers get promoted (IE: 20 drivers) I will start running a season of regional and a season of ASA together.

Since you posted the first request, you'll get to be the first FOFC Owner in season 5

Bristol motor Speedway saw an odd race today, as early on it looked like Kevin Casey and his #29 Chevy would run away and hide. But pit stops were done and in the ensuing return to the track Casey never looked the same. his car just wouldn't pull off the corners and he faded farther and farther back.

Outside Pole sitter and 3 time race winner Marconi and his #40 Dodge aparently used up their engine in qualifying because they fell to dead last on lap 2 and were simply the slowest car on the track.

Jackson Lewis kept up his steady runs as did prenial favorite Josh Perrt. Michael Johnson picked up the win putting his #38 Ford in Voctory lane!

Week 3 finds us at the monster mile of Dover, what can I say but "Josh Perry is god" it wasn't enough for josh to take the pole position a full 2.5 miles per hour ahead of the 2nd fastest car, not enough for him to lead the most laps during the day, he led EVERY lap, running away and hiding for a completely dominant 15+ second lead at the checkered flag.

The lone Female driver in the series thus far, Sarah Finklestein, lost a header late in the day and finished 16th, 11 laps down.

Race number 4 of season 3 sees our boys (and girl) in the Napa valley. It looked like everyone could toss back the wine readily as Josh Perry took an early lead, but with 10 laps to go he slowed and started falling back into the clutches of Kevin Casey. Casey took the lead with 15 laps left, but hot on his heals came jackson Lewis who stole the top spot with just a few laps remaining. Casey made a last lap charge but just didn't have enough machine left; He settled for second.

Martinsville is our 5th stop in season 3, and the snooze masters were out in force today. josh perry soundly defeated everyone in the field, lapping all by second place driver Jim Boyington. Jackson Lewis held on for a good finish and kept perry from extending his points lead too far. At 50 points this is the closest most people have been to Perry since season 1. Newcomer to teh series neal Rickson is fairing well in his #2 Pontiac, while fellow rookie Fred Peterson struggles along in last place.

Race 6 brings the series to beautiful New England. The New hampshire raceway put on a great show. Points leaders Perry and Lewis had, for them, dismal days, finishing mid-pack. Race 7 of Season 3: The Sand Hills of North Carolina for the Rockingham event.

Pole sitter Joe Ruttman says he loves this race track, but today it must have seemed like his worst nightmare. He ran well at first, staying near the front, but slowly and surely, his day grew more and more miserable. He finished15th a full lap off the leaders. Jim Boyington dominated the day leading the most laps and turning a spin-out into a huge lead as the field slowed to avoid him and stopped for nearly 4 seconds while he took off and left them behind! But in the end it was Mike Jordan in the NIKE sponsored Chevy that grabbed the lead and held on for the victory.

Week 8, off the Arizona dn the burning desert: Phoenix Raceway

Today was a race all about domination and taking a track by the ba....err horns. Fred Peterson, rookie in the series, went out to Phoenix and literally showed everyone how to race there. he made even the series dominators look like children as he torched his way around the track leading every lap on his way to an11.85 second margin of victory.

Race 9 brings us back east to Richmond VA
Josh Perry opened up his lead just a little in the points today as he brought his car up through the field to take control of the race about 1/3 of the way through, he never looked back and went on to win easily. Jackson Lewis, trying desperately to hang on to perry in the points standings led the early part of the race and fought to keep his 2nd place finish over Kevin Casey who finally started to fade late in the event.

Race 10: 2/3 point in season 3, Watkins Glen International Roadway

It looked as if Josh Perry would be his dominant self today when he took the pole for the event, but Series regular Warren borg put his chevy into the lead and never considered giving it up as he drove to his first Regional Series win in three seasons. Perry went on to finish fourth, which on any other day would have made jackson Lewis happy, but today Lewis' car was simply awful. he couldn't pass, he couldn't accelerate off the turns, nothing worked. Lewis finished almost 40 seconds behind the leaders, in 14th place. As you will notice in the standings, the season is still ripe for a new champion, but Watkins GLen helped Perry build an 87 point lead going into the final 5 races.

AP Sportswire:

In a surprising move the Nextel Regional racing series (NRRS) will be selecting up to 4 applicants for new owners in season 4. They had previously announced a wish to bring in new ownership at the beginning of season 5, but due to a drastic move forward by their dat entry people, they feel its time to get new blood in teh series as soon as possible

Interested applicants should PM the following:

Owners name:
FOFC ID:
Drivers name:
Make and model of Car:
Preferred number(s) (subject to change as necessary by the NRRS, please give us 3 in order of preference):
Owner driver history, a short description of where this team is coming from.

As live owners gain wins by their driver, they will be asked to allot 5 points to the stats of their choice.

In other news the NRRS has struck a deal with GNL.tv to web cast their events to viewers on the internet. Once the sysytem is in place viewers can log into a website and literally watch the events unfold before them. GNL.tv includes a standings list which updates every 10 seconds as well as a graphical view that will show you the cars positions on the track at any given moment. All of these items are still being installed and tweaked, but should be available soon. Stay tuned here for more news.

Ok folks, the tech boys have spoken, let the webcasting of events commence!

I'm planning to run the next NRRS event (race 13 I believe, as I've run one or two others that need to be psted yet) on Saturday between 1pm and 2 PM. I'll try to post something more specific cloaser to the date.

To view the races, wnehever they are run, tune your browsers to:

http://www.majecc.net/racesim

the page that opens will either have stats showing, or will inform you that NR2003 is not loded or is unavailable. Whenever I run a race I will connect it to that so it can be viewed.

The stats listing updates every ten seconds, showing all the standard information about each entry, including a notation if they are moving up or moving down in the standings. If you're viewing the statistics and it seems to have stopped updating every 10 seconds, simply click on reload/refresh. This will occur when I accelerate the race to get through it without watching the whole thing myself.

More info to come!

Alrighty, after running the last few races of season 3 live via webcast on saturday afternoon. I have a couple things that needs to be done:

firstly: I have to update the thread with the last few races and summary of season 3

second I have to go through the stats and see who, if any move to ASA (this will determine how many FOFCers I can take in season 4)

thirdly, I need anyone interested to PM me (I have two applicants currently)

with the information from the post above if you want to be an owner in the regional series. one clarification: the make and model of car can be almost anything you want, ford chevy dodge pontiac, mercury, oldsmobile, hell you could decide to race a model-T if you so choose, as long as yer willing to write up somthething in the thread to explain it

season 4 will start up as soon as I've gotten everything in order. There will be at least 2 fofc owners added, and as many more as there are cars that get promoted after season 3, so get your apps in! first come first entered!!

At the end of Season 3, Josh Perry has defended his title by staying on top of the points chase wire to wire. Perry and the Geico Ford Taurs team also received funding to move into the ASA division, which caused a massive sigh of relief to the rest of the regional drivers!

Advancing to ASA after season 3:
#77 Geico Ford driven by Josh Perry

With Perry's advancement there are now 3 positions open for FOFC owners in the regional ranks. Please join me in a round of applause, or pleasent greeting of some sort, to the newest owners in the Nextel regional racing series:

Owners name: David Gonzalez
FOFC ID: kingfc22
Drivers name: Paul Gonzalez
Make and model of Car: Cheverolet Monte Carlo
Number: 22

Owner David Gonzalez is currently a driver on the FOFC Nextel Cup tour and has recently inherited a large sum of money from his grandfather. He has decided to buy a team so that his younger brother Paul could have a chance to one day race with him on the circuit.

Paul is an aggressive driver that will do whatever it takes to try to get to the front of the field even if it means trading some paint with other cars.

Owners name: Bobby Mask
