OT - IWS #59 Results
IWS #59 – The results are in…
It’s a Chariots of Fire kind of finish… a huge uspet! After all this *tension* ... Let’s go through the questions, shall we? 1. Name a color blue - 24 red - 18 black - 6 white green Good old standard question… and lots of people got right in the two-part wheelhouse of blue and red, which I expected to finish in that order. As you later gathered, my main interest in this question was to set up #4, which I thought was much more interesting. 2. Name a “good luck” superstition four leaf clover - 19 rabbit’s foot – 16 knock on wood – 3 horseshoe – 3 find a penny heads up – 2 rewearing clothing – 2 crossing fingers – 2 jumping over chalk lines in baseball putting on right shoe first lucky penny I expected “crossing fingers” to make a better showing, but the distribution here wasn’t much of a surprise to me, overall. I though the top two here might determine the winner of the whole contest… but rabbit’s feet made a late rally to allow those entries to have a shot. 3. Name a “bad luck” superstition black cat – 18 broken mirror – 13 walk under a ladder – 8 Friday the 13th – 5 number 13 – 3 broken window step on a crack… stepping on the foul line I’m a little surprised here… I thought that Friday the 13th might win this, and I think that would have been my answer. I would have been an also-ran in my own contest, I’m sure. 4. Name a color, other than what you named for #1 red – 22 blue – 16 green – 6 white – 5 black I loved the idea of this question, even though it had the potential to make this pair of questions a real feast-or-famine double shot. Unfortunately, the results here pretty paired-up (as I had feared they might get) -- I didn’t want to see people who submitted red then blue get a giant penalty, even though they might have had the “right” two answers, in the wrong order. Alas, the major key to this contest was submitting the two most popular colors… blue/red was the best choice, then red/blue… if you picked anything else, you got flattened. 5. Name a non-integer number, greater than one pi – 17 1.5 – 9 1.1 – 7 3.14 – 5 1.01 – 2 2 – 2 2.5 – 2 none – 2 5/3 3 100 69 I loved this question, and would have predicted the top three responses, but I didn’t see the runaway win for pi. Yes, I know, it’s harsh to declare that 3.14 is a different response than pi… but really now, the game rules are very clear and you know who’s running the show this time, gang. If you wanted pi, you could say pi – I can handle it. (It didn’t affect the overall winner, fortunately) I graciously combined the two non-answers into a match, though… I’m really not such a bad guy. By the way, it was my intention to make this a puzzle that did not require any “googling” research… but certainly the word integer can be quickly researched, though that prospect didn’t occur to me originally. 6. Name a three-letter acronym that nearly everyone recognizes NFL – 16 FOF – 10 USA – 5 FBI – 3 IRS – 3 IWS – 3 CIA – 2 GOP lol AVG ADD MIA www AAA PAT Okay, here’s where I would have fallen totally off my own wagon, as I would have gotten a lousy score here. The bottom line seems to be: when you heard “everyone” did you interpret that as “the whole population” or as “everyone at FOFC.” It looks like the latter prevailed (or at least people had their minds on football) and so the runaway winning guesses were football-related. In designing the contest, I did not have that in mind at all… and I really struggled with this one until deciding that USA was going to be the “right” answer. ::buzzer sound:: - - - And with all that behind us, let’s see how things finished up. We had no prefect score (I’m glad) and the entry I was watching as I tallied things up held on to win it all… are you sitting down? Code:
As usual, the formatting will be all screwed up… but all you need to see is in the upper left corner. Congratulations, Matthijs, you have climbed the mountain! With the biggest IWS contest in quite some time (I think), you prevailed… and are the rightful winner of IWS #59! Meep! Meep! Zzzzzoooooooofffffff! |

Actually, the "greater than one" was dumped in there for exactly this reason. After thinking briefly about my original draft, it occurred to me that easily 2/3 of the responses would be 2/3. |

Integer = round number like 1 or 4 or 90 (some call them "whole" numbers) Non-integer = anything else, like 1.1, 3.14, 90 1/2, etc. Last edited by QuikSand : 02-27-2004 at 08:07 AM. |

Wouldn't 3.14 qualify as pi? I'm sure that's what those folks were thinking.

It's MIJB's world, now. The winner traditionally runs the next contest. I think that I speak for everyone here when I say, don't take this one from MIJB. |

The pi question killed me. I actually thought about submitting "pi", but that's not a number. I guess I am not with stupid...

I would be one. I misread the question. I thought it asked for an integer. And yes, I think the people who put 3.14 should get credit for pi. It's what they meant. |

Congrats MIJB!!!!! You did it!!
Since I only play this game if I feel I would win (like the last time I played ) all I had to do was to switch red/blue to tie. But it was MIJB to win and I am very happy. |

I would have probably selected red/blue, but, I decided that since the questions were linked, I would pick black/white. But, so it goes. Also, I think Quik and I would have had similar answers on the luck questions.
Congrats MIJB. |

WOW, this is possibly the most shocking result of anything in the history of man.
Congrats, MIJB!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! How could I lose to MIJB#19?!?
That's it. It's a mirage. This isn't possible. This is just payback for making fun of you and your grammar needling in the other thread, isn't it?!? We all know MIJB#19 couldn't have won so this is your retribution. Bastard! ![]() SI

Amazing!!!
![]() EDIT: Someone a while back wrote, with respect to the possible Cubs in World Series eventually not happening: "You know the world goes down when MIJB wins IWS". Well ladies and mostly gentlemen, it was good to be alive, yet time to make an end to it all has come. ![]() But seriously, I somehow figured blue and red would beat black/white, a rabbit's foot, a black cat over a broken mirror, pi and the NFL over FOF would be a good combo, but the winning combo? Really, after some very moving weeks, this probably was the single-to-last thing I'd expected to happen. Now a real problem for me is, my signature is ruined, or else I'd have to win the IHOF in year 0001 (which is so unlikely). Concidering hosting: due to earlier forfeits winners to host, I've had the priviledge of hosting two times already yet, I'd have to think up some questions first. Maybe aging does make one smarter (or more stupid), who can tell? A special thanks goes out to Buccaneer, the most loyal of all my fans, and what really makes this victory good is that it was a QuikSand classic. Enough for the oscar speeches, IWS#60 will be in the weekend, barring internet traffic stops suffering from the snow and ice around here. Wow! ![]()

I'm proud to say I was the one that sent in "69" as an answer. I never was very good with mathematic vocabulary.

Ick, I did terrible. Luckily for QS, 3.14 didn't kill me since I was already screwed. If I had been in contention and had been screwed over with that, it would have gotten very unpleasant around here...
![]() Oh, and congrats Meep! ![]()

MIJB, I am proud of you ! I think I inverted the red/blue answers. And I know I said 1.1, otherwise 3.14 would have been my answer (when of course I was thinking pi) but pi<>3.14

IWS#60 will not be for another 18 hours.
The almost constant absence of internet access at home this weekend means I won't post IWS#60 until I return to school on Monday.
