Unhappy Eddie Mac calls it quits

I realize it is probably the right thing for him to do, but still a little sad.

Ed McCaffrey to retire

Broncos: McCaffrey to call it quits

by Fanball Staff - Fanball.com
Tuesday, March 2, 2004

News
The Rocky Mountain News is reporting that Broncos wide receiver Ed McCaffrey has scheduled a press conference this afternoon to announce the end of a career that includes three Super Bowl crowns, 565 receptions, and 55 touchdown catches. The 35-year-old Stanford grad averaged more than eight scores per season between 1996 and 2000, but a broken leg in 2001 and several concussions last season have him looking forward to life after football. "I feel great, I'm excited," McCaffrey told the News.

Views
McCaffrey caught just 19 passes for 195 yards and failed to reach paydirt last season. With the laundry list of injuries he was carrying and the constant punishment he was taking over the middle, his time had come, and we wish him nothing but the best. That said, we're pretty excited about ushering in the Ashley Lelie era. He immediately becomes the starter opposite Rod Smith and is ready to bust out in his third season.

No biggie... Champ Bailey has always wanted to play WR anyway.

...what a distinguished career. He had a good run, that's for sure. Don't think he was quite the same since that season ending injury he suffered a season or two ago. Broken leg, I think?

I wouldn't think so. Sure, he was tenacious as shit, but you gotta have similar numbers to be in with the great ones. Perhaps the Broncos Hall of Fame.

Although, take a look at Mr Stallworth here:

Pretty damn close. It's always tough to figure out what bar you set for the hall. Do you compare it to guys already in there or base it on the era that they guy came from? If it's the latter, i would have to say that he doesn't get it....ever. If you base it off of guys in there already, I would say he gets in...but not for awhile.

Only in the HOF Took a Lickin' and Kept On Tickin' Wing.

Geez, did that guy get clobbered on a regular basis!

I always respected him, though. Good player.

You absolutely have to judge players by era, otherwise droves of mediocre players would he flooding into the hall.

i would agree. In that case, Ed wouldn't get in...or, he would get a sympathy vote later on. Hell, if Ed were to get in, then Herman Moore would be a first ballot addition.

He was one of those players who you hated, if he wasn't on your team. Not really hate, more of a frustration. Also, he was one of those WRs that you had all the faith in the world in. There was rarely a moment where I thought to myself

"3rd and long? Ed ain't gonna catch that next ball over the middle for a first down"

I loved Easy Ed. I've always wondered what we could have been like if it was Ed opposite Rice for all those years...

Yep

I remember watching teams play the Broncos, every time the Broncos would have a third and long, you knew the ball was going to McCaffrey, but no matter what, it seemed like he caught it every single time.

I really used to hate him... but I always respected him, when he went out there he just got the job done. Great WR, but I don't think he has the numbers to put him in the HOF.

He always got so lit up! He did hold on to the ball, though. On the play where he had his leg snapped just below the knee he held on to the ball and made the catch.

I could never like easy Ed because he always wore those stupid tiny shoulder pads. he looked like such a tool. Also I am a raider fan.

He was a good blocker too.
