Talking Funny John Kerry Picture

All politics aside, can anyone seriously consider voting for a Presidential candidate who looks like this when attempting to catch a football?!

One of my favorite assignments for my students is to examine photos from newspapers portraying political leaders. Often times, high schoolers are surprised that news outlets can have political bias, but they quickly catch on after this work...

It happens with both liberal and conservative outlets and is a great source of amusement for me...

Usually within a few weeks, even my politically uninterested students can tell you what papers are more liberal/conservative...which helps them become much more aware of slants and views that aren't always "Fair and Balanced"

If only more American adults were aware of the manipulation the press can use to alter your views of a particular leader...

The next 8 months should produce some great photo ops on both Bush and Kerry...

Nice post...

This will also help some of my freshmen receivers catch better. Once they see how stupid they look catching like this they'll have no choice but to USE YOUR HANDS...SEE THE BALL INTO YOUR HANDS...CONCENTRATE ON THE TIP OF THE BALL...DON'T CLOSE YOUR EYES...damnit Kerry...what am I going to do with you...put Cheney in...

I would never vote for someone who couldn't handle a simple, red-blooded American activity. Like catching a football, or eating pretzels while watching football.

Hmm. FWIW, Kerry has a bum shoulder. From today's CNN news round up (their Morning Grind column):

"CNN's Mike Roselli tells us that Kerry may have surgery on his right shoulder in the coming weeks and may take a weeklong vacation soon (location TBA). Kerry hurt his shoulder on a bus in Iowa this winter. He told the press about the operation 30 minutes after he was seen tossing a softball on the airport tarmac in San Antonio on Saturday."

This might, or might not, have something to do with it.

Guess Bush has an advantage there...incoming meant a new shipment of booze or coke for him in the 60's, 70's, and 80's...

Honestly now... "looking like a dork" is not a strong attribute for a man seeking the nation's highest office. It's staggering how easy politics can be to predict sometimes, by just looking at the lowest common denominator.

I think back to Phil Gramm of Texas, who ran for Prez a few years ago (my memory fails me... 1996?). In my judgment, he was as smart and articulate a candidate as the conservatives had to offer for the GOP nomination. But, the poor guy looked fat and bald and pretty unattractive, and his drawl sounded like Huckleberry Hound. He never had any chance to win a damned thing.

I chuckle when I see politicians doing sports related photo-ops. Usually, they end up with less than desirable results.

Presidential golfers are among some of the worst. As a kid, one of my first memories of a president was seeing Gerald Ford almost kill an old lady with an errant tee shot. I remember thinking to myself that the safest place to watch Ford play would be in the middle of the fairway.

yeah...if I ever see another photo of Clinton running in those little shorts...I will puke all over myself...

Poor Chelsea, she might have the brains, but in terms of looks, she never had a shot...and, it seems like most posters here, I think within the next 20 years, looks will become the #1 feature of our leaders...it's just where we are headed...

Now, if we had a system like England, where the leaders actually have to respond to challenges and debate their opponents regularly w/o it being totally scripted, it might be different. But with American style politics, I see us heading towards an ever more Glitz and Glamour style, where looks, sound bites, and pre-arranged speaking engagements rule the day... OH wait, it's already happening???

How great would it be to see Bush in Congress responding to a barb from Daschle...English majors the world over are cringing at the thought...

Kevin

It's true. I felt the same way about Phil Gramm. Some people are capable, they just have natural limitations that preclude them from higher aspirations. I felt the same way about Bob Dole, actually (playing the role of crotchety old man), and I think the only reason he even got to be the nominee is that the party was looking for someone to sacrifice to Clinton's re-election, and the guy kept insisting that he deserved his shot, so he got what he asked for.

Of course, there's the famous "Dukakis in the tank" image, which is still fresh 16 years later.

Notice that we have to rely on the caption to tell us he made the catch. Clearly another example of left-wing media bias.

To be fair, the picture of Bush on the last page, looking through binoculars with the lens caps on, is pretty funny. Although apparently Clinton used to do the same for the sake of a photo op, so maybe he isn't as incompetent as that picture would suggest...

I don't think Republicans really want to turn this into which Presidential candidate looks dumber in pictures debate. Kerry may look like an idiot in some of these shots, but he's no "W.".

That wasn't my intention, just a funny pic. However, aside from the last picture of him picking his nose as a 20-something (at least that' s how old that picture looks to me), those other pictures really aren't funny in and of themselves. I've seen the same thing done with Kerry pictures. Kerry's pictures - many of them - are funny without needing to compare them to anything.

Go to the Drudge report you can even order an action figure of him...notice, you can't buy a version of Bush from his Vietnam days...he was...busy...yeah that's it...

It's pretty easy to find a picture of anyone that makes them look silly. I think we all have those drunk, halfway turned around, eyelids half shut, 'wtf are you doing taking a picture?' pictures somewhere in our closets. And that could easily be a photo of Daniel Graham of the New England Patriots.

Kerry might not be as uncoordinated as that picture suggests - it's possible the sun was in his eyes, or the throw caught him completely off-guard.

I know I know, I'm reaching, but that's the thing with pictures - without the context they can sometimes be misleading...

Dola. I worked on the Gramm campaign. He had alot of money, I thought maybe we could have a chance, but he made it clear he wanted to be himself. For one of the smartest politicians I have ever spent alot of time with, I could never understand why he would not understand what he was projecting.

Now we've got the cycling John Kerry - http://www.usatoday.com/news/politic...rry-bike_x.htm

Real reason why I posted this
Quote:
Kerry was riding south on a two-lane road at about 1:00 p.m. in the direction of Walden Pond State Reservation in Concord, a quiet, suburban town about 18 miles northwest of Boston.
He was approaching a stop light at the intersection with Route 2 and was slowing down when he veered left into the oncoming lane and fell, according to an Associated Press reporter who witnessed him fall. Secret Service agents and local police immediately stopped traffic while Kerry and a handful of bicycling companions moved to the shoulder.
It happened literally down the road from my house. To be fair, that part of the road does have a lot of sand, and I could see how someone riding a road bike could have trouble. It's just hilarious picturing that intersection with Secret Service and the CPD stopping traffic because Kerry veered into traffic.
