Dat OTHER boy run so good....

Just teasin'...

However, they've already started hyping Thomas' understudy, Brandyn Young (aka "B.Y."), the next in line in the Tucker tailback tradition. He'll become at least the fifth consecutive D-1 kid to play tailback at Tucker. Even though they aren't spelling his name right yet, they will be soon enough. B.Y. is not quite as fast as Thomas, but few backs are. He is a little taller (around 5'11" or 6'0"), and will undoubtedly end up carrying a little more weight than Thomas as his body continues to mature. I'd expect to see him in the 200-210 range by the fall. He's more of a "slasher-with-good-speed" type back, as opposed to Thomas' blinding speed and uncanny field vision. I doubt that B.Y. will be considered among the best handful of backs in the nation like Thomas, but he is a kid that should good significant playing time on Saturday afternoons for at least a couple of years. At any rate, here's the first of many articles that will be published about him now that he's no longer "the kid who replaced Thomas Brown."

Brandon Young

Tucker (GA) Standout Has 1st Offer
By Ryan Jordan TheInsiders.com
Date: Mar 2, 2004

Tucker High School is known for producing blue chip running backs such as Patrick Pass, Jabari Davis, and most recently, Thomas Brown. That tradition should continue in the class of 2005 with big time tailback, Brandon Young.

"I'm excited to be a part of the running back tradition we have. Just to be another name mentioned with Tucker, is an honor," Brandon Young said.

Brandon has an early offer, and a top 5.

"My favorites are Oklahoma State, Oregon, Virginia, Georgia, and Georgia Tech. Oklahoma State's running back coach offered me not too long ago."

What does Young like about each of his favorites?

Oklahoma State: "They're not real deep at TB. I think they only signed 1 last year."

Oregon: "I've always been a big Oregon fan. I liked Ontarrio Smith, and I played with them on NCAA football a lot. I'd like to play on the west coast."

Virginia: "Like Oklahoma State, after this year they aren't real deep at running back."

Georgia: "If I only had the opportunity to play DB, that's where I would go. I think they need some help in the secondary."

Georgia Tech: "Of all the schools, they probably have the best education program. It's close to home so my family could see me play."

What are the most important factors for Brandon in choosing a school?

"Playing time, and the depth at the position. I'd like to play right away, and I want to play running back. It would be nice to get away from home."

What does the Tucker standout feel he does best on the football field?

"I think I'm a good leader. I have good speed, but I'm more of a North and South runner. I like to run over guys."

What will he be working on the most before he leaves for college?

"I need to get my strength up. By the summer, I want to get up to a 330 bench and a 405 squat."

Brandon took over for Thomas Brown late in 2003 when Brown went down with an injury, and he had tremendous success. With Thomas off to Georgia next year, Brandon should have an absolutely huge senior season.

That's not one of the categories, so let's just call him a (Dist), Prest.

Uhhh, last I checked Tech didn't have a education program.

Though, that would still make their's better than UGA's.

Doubt it means much other than the fact that he took over for a high-profile player, but I just noticed that B.Y. is one of only 17 Juniors listed at The Insiders at this point.

Oregon? WTF? Ben, you need to talk some sense into him - friends don't let friends go to Oregon. If he wants to go to the West Coast, there are a lot more schools he ought to consider...

LOL! It is still very, very early, and you're talking about the whims of teenager. I wouldn't put much stock into what you read 11 months before Signing Day.

Yeah, very true. My post was tongue-in-cheek of course. What it says to me though, is that while some might poke fun at all the Madison Ave. marketing Oregon has done recently, it does seem to be working.

Can't you scoot him to Illinois? C'mon SkyDog I believe in you. He'd get to play right away! And they have a great education program. It's can't miss.

Why would he want to go to Oklahoma State? It's obvious he's never been to Stillwater. What a terrible place to live four years.

That's the first time I've heard of NCAA football being useful as a recruiting tool. Schools better start assigning someone to EA to make sure they don't underrate their team.

Who would want to play in those god-awful uniforms thought? I would seriously eliminate schools based on that.

This has become somewhat of a Tucker tradition. Last season's QB D.T. McDowell initially chose Nebraska because he said he played three PS2 games, one with him at the Nebraska controls, one with him at the Auburn controls and one with the two teams both on computer control. Nebraska won two out of three.

If this is true, yet another reason recruiting will turn a coach's hair grey...I mean, how do you deal with this if you're a competing coach?

"Son, you do understand that this game is just one group's opinion of how good or bad players and teams are and has only a tenuous relationship to reality?"

Of course, D.T. ended up signing with Troy State after Solich was fired, but that is another story all together.

"Bee-Why"

Seriously, I've never heard anyone call him Bran-Don or Bran-Din. He introduced himself to me the first time I met him as "B.Y."--and that's what all the coaches and his friends call him.

Tim might be my favorite player to come through Tucker since I've lived here ('97). GREAT kid, and a warrior at FB and LB. He was my work partner for the day on a Habitat for Humanity home build in the spring of his senior year. You don't find many kids who have signed a D-1 scholly volunteering to haul wheelbarrows full of dirt and concrete in the hot May Georgia sun to build a home for those less fortunate.

don't listen to those dumb Okies, Ben. Them boys so stupid they think the Univesity of Oklahoma's acronym is OU.

Steer him to Oklahoma State. Great school, great town, small town America at it's finest. Plus, I think he'd look good in hunter safety orange.

Goodwell is in line for the starting ILB position in Joe Lee Dunn's defense. That can be very fun to play in his scheme. I watched him play last year and has really matured on the football field. I think he has a chance to do great things at Memphis.

Goodwell and the Memphis football team are a real plus for the community. The team is always doing something. Danny Wimprine and Deangelo Williams always go to schools and read to kids. That is part of the reason everyone is so excited about Tiger football. That and the fact that they are finally winning.

In case of you have any serious inclination to think that I would steer any of these kids, that just isn't the case. I've seen first-hand in some cases the pressure that friends and even sometimes family members will put on these kids. Those that have asked for my opinion, I always say pretty much the exact same thing: "Don't listen to anyone else who tries to tells you where you should spend the next part of your life. Follow only what your heart is telling you. You're the one who will live in whatever town, with whatever players and coaches, for the next four or five years. Neither your mama, your daddy, your friends or your coaches can or will do that for you."

Since Oregon is the only school on the west coast on his list, shouldn't this decision be easy?
