Garcia Signs With Cleveland

ESPN is reporting on their front page that it's a done deal.
Why the hell would a team with 2 adaquete QB's go out and sign another one for big money, long term?

Supposedly they are going to cut Couch since he isn't going to take the 50% proposed paycut. Thus making room for Garcia.

And maybe they aren't so sure Holcomb is the long term answer. Now if they get Henson and het him sit and learn...

And Garcia has been to a bunch of Pro Bowls. Just how many have Couch and Holcomb been to?

I'm not saying it might not be an improvement, im just saying that from an outsiders point of view they spend way too much time and money trying to address and area that might not be their biggest need.

Is Couch any good? Is he a journeyman at this point, or could he go to Dallas or Maybe Pittsburgh and be their QB for the next 10 years.

I already know he was supposed to be Cleve's "franchise guy."

A. No, Couch is not any good. So far the guy has shown jack shit (except for the ability to cry when booed by his home fans).

B. Yes, Garcia's dad had said he was going to Tampa. My guess is this either ended up blowing the Tampa deal for him, or forced Cleveland to up their offer to Garcia (which sounds like the case, since I had originally heard 2 years 9 miliion... now it's 4 years 25 million).

C. Holcomb seems like exactly the guy you would want as backup. He's been better of the bench and in short terms as starter there.

D. Couch to Dallas (for the right money) is something that's been rumored since the beginning of last season. Personally, I don't think there will be much of a market for the guy.

Couch to Dallas would be surprising as he doesn't seem to be the mentally tough type of QB Parcells likes.

What'll really surprise me is if Couch goes to Tampa, and has his career revived by Gruden. Actually, that'll get me more worried than anything....

Hell, neither is Garcia. He's what, 34? This says to me that the Browns are looking to draft one of the two big QBs.

Man, from All-Pro QB and heir-apparent to Steve Young, to Cleveland's answer to Jon Kitna, in one year. Still, Kurt Warner's got no competition for quickest fall to earth.

How long before the Browns get somebody who actually knows what they're doing instead of Butch Davis?

The long term part is smoke and mirrors, just like all NFL contracts these days. This is a two year deal, with both parties understanding that it will be a two year deal, but signed for 5 so that the cap impact is minimized for that two years.

I think this move was done solely because Butch Davis felt it would make the Browns better next year during which he has to make the playoffs to keep his job.

With Mike Williams in the mix, and both Oakland and Arizona rumored to be passing on QBs, Roethlisberger could slip all the way to the Browns. It looks like Henson is almost assuredly going to slip back to the draft, so the Browns could still have a shot at Big Ben.

2 year, $10M guaranteed, with the chance at another $5M in incentives.

That's what the deal is practically. Officially, it is 4 years, 25 million.

Cleveland needs to address the Offensive Coordinator role more then the QB role IMO

He's got decent ability (pretty good arm and skills), but he seems to have hit the wall in terms of progress and improvement, doesn't read defenses as well as he should, and more importantly, isn't very mentally tough. That's a big "uh-oh" in the NFL. See: Ryan Leaf.

They fired Arians this year and replaced him with Robiskie(I think I spelled his name right) the old WR coach. Cleveland is supposed to be going with a running game this year which worries me because they have no OL. They need to pass on a QB in the first and take Gallery or Andrews if he's there. I wouldn't be angry if Sean Taylor fell to Cleveland either.

I still think a deal will be done, but it'll be *very* close to draft day. I'd say it'll be the week leading up to the draft. I think a 3rd rounder now or a second round pick next year will be the price. Henson and agent will settle for 2nd round money, when they realize that's the best they can possibly hope for.

Actually, in the years I've been watching couch play he reminds me quite a bit of phil simms. I think he'd be a great pick up for dallas, IF the line can be shored up to protect him.

the tuna likes to pound the ball, couch is a good steady running game oriented QB

I think parcells could do a lot worse than grabbing couch for the little he'll be requesting just to get another job.

anything's better than quincy.....

Be careful. If the football gods hear you, you could end up with Kordell Stewart as your QB.

It may already be too late.

I feel a great disturbance in the force.... Ryan Leaf has begun workouts.
