Charlie Garner to sign with Buccs & Gruden

Tuesday, March 9, 2004

By John Clayton
ESPN.com

The Bucs have reached an agreement in principle with former Raiders running back Charlie Garner, opting to sign Garner over the Eagles' Duce Staley.

Garner

Garner is expected to sign a six-year, $20 million contract with the Bucs that includes $4 million in up-front money. Garner was also high on the list of the Broncos, who recently traded Clinton Portis to the Redskins.

The Bucs moved quickly to reunite Garner with his former Raiders coach, Jon Gruden. They had been negotiating with Staley, who visited last week. Staley spent Monday in Pittsburgh and was in serious negotiations with the Steelers.

This will be the third team in which Garner and Gruden have worked together. Garner, 32, was considered instant offense for Gruden in Philadelphia when Gruden was offensive coordinator there. He signed with the Raiders in 2001 and spent three seasons in Oakland as a starter.

Senior writer John Clayton covers the NFL for ESPN.com.

Umm switching to Mozilla Firefox makes my WYSIWYG editor way cooler, even Garner's image gets pasted over. Sweet.

My opinion on this is that Garner is a very underrated back, but he might be hitting that wall for running backs.

Not grumpy at all...this article looks a lot better than the other one.

For the record I don't believe either...

I refuse to believe that Garner is going to sign with both the Buccs AND Gruden...

Baah! The Buccs can have Garner. he isn't old enough to start for the Raiders anyway. I think the Raiders are working out Reggie Cobb and Vince Workman to see if either can fill the void left by Garner.

Not a bad signing for the Bucs, although I'm currently too lazy to even look at the contract numbers.

Wow! Blast from the past! They could grab Errict Rhett while they are at it, he's fresh from coming off 5 years of inactivity.

I think his agent is still working on that deal from his brilliant holdout.

And he's doing a fine job, he said just last week that he is confident that Errict Rhett will finally get the Barry Sanders type-money he deserves! Finally, he's right!

Oh yeah. He's definitely a free agent.

I really liked Errict. Nice kid who picked the agent from hell. By the time he fired him, it was too late.

I like Errict too. I wanted him to stay a Buc, and I wanted them to use that 1st round pick on OT Walter Jones instead of RB Warrick Dunn.

But, I got over that nightmare scenario....weeks ago.

That was the Bucs foul up. Errict had already fired his agent and wanted to remain a Buccaneer ( in the days when no one wanted that ) but McKay wouldn't give him the time of day by then.

Nightmare all the way around.

Now, talk about nightmares. KC taking Tait one pick ahead of us and us choosing McFarland. Or was the nightmare giving him a huge contract last season and him doing jack???? Either way, nightmare.
