Rollerball

Ok, this has always been one of my all time favorite movies. It's the only movie that I've ever written a sequel for. I'm not kidding. I was in 8th grade when my best friend and I wrote that sucker. We loved it that much. I still think it would have been a blockbuster.

I hadn't seen it in years.

Time has done a lot to try and kill this one for me. The suck ass remake almost did it but no.

I just got the original from netflix yesterday and realized a lot of other flaws. The movie hasn't aged well. The effects are cheezy, the acting not so great mostly and the future is apparantly more primitive than the present.

I watched the first few minutes thinking that time had caught up with this movie and I was going to have another of my most dearest childhood memories tarnished by the demon of time.

Thing is, I started getting other things. Things I'd missed. The Tokyo game for example. Pure genius. I knew what had happened but now I get why. I found myself cheering Jonathan all over again and damned it felt good. I found myself hating John Housman yet again and I still feel he is one of the most underappreciated villians ever and not just for this film. The guy is pure movie gold.

I don't know. It's not really a classic but to me it is. I'll never not get caught in the moment. I am hooked.

No real point but am I the only one???

PS: this film was definitely pre steroids. Not one of these dudes would cut it as an athlete today much less 14 years in the future.

Dola,

I always thought that Michael Jordan was the real world Jonathan E. Of course, no one wanted to kill him but still, he raised the bar of individual achievement beyond the team concept and it may well have wrecked the sport. That can't be good on a team sport level.

You are not alone in considering the original movie a classic, whether the "experts" would agree with you or not.

On a related note, I don't know if you ever pull out the dice for any tabletop game action, but if anything would tempt you, this might

I also loved the original when I saw it as a youngster, but I re-watched it this past year with my girlfriend.... lord does the movie not hold up well. Could Caan have been any more wooden? It's like he wasn't even trying to act.

I feel you but to me the movie rose above it. I'm still hooked.

Big question. Anybody want to try this bad boy online since rules have been posted?? I'm still dl ing them but I'd certainly love to try if it's viable.

They could make an awesome video game out of Rollerball if they tried (I don't know if they ever have).

That's actually the game that pushed me over the edge into buying some card stock to print stuff on btw. Best purchase I've made in years, since having it on hand pushed me into playing at least a half dozen other "print-it-yourself" games in the last few months.

I strongly recommend checking out the discussions of the Rollerball game/sim at http://forums.delphiforums.com/tabletopsports/messages

There have been several on-again/off-again threads there, just search for "Rollerball" over the past 6 months & you should run across them. There's been quite a bit of discussion of various rules variants, stat keeping, player generation, league structure, etc, etc that really should add a lot to both the understanding & enjoyment of Chris Rohan's original design (and Chris was part of the threads, so there are quite a few questions answered there as well).

I'm going now but come on. Wanna be part of an FOFC rollerball league?? I think we have several interested participants. I'd love to see you take part Jon.

I'll have to pass. I simply don't have the time to keep up with it.

Other movies that would be great video games:

Death Race 2000 (although Carmageddon pretty much covers this)
The Warriors (I believe Page 2's "Sports Guy" has said the same thing)

Nope, Carmageddon doesn't have Stallone or a Carradine.

I want the Warriors to come out and play.

I guess we like the same movies. Shame time limits your gaming time. You're the guy I want to play against.

Wow, I just found out that Rockstar (GTA makers) are making/made "The Warriors"... looks like it's coming out later this year.

It had better get released on PC.

Sweet stuff. I am a good friend of a friend of "lips" as he calls her. The radio dj from Warriors. I'm sure she's excited about this. At least I hope she gets her cut.

That's so great. They could really make it a great game if they go all out. I think aside from being "The Warriors" it would be great to be able to have an alternate play mode where you choose another gane and try to hunt down The Warriors.

They should also just add in some huge gang royal-rumble type fights. There were so many awesomen/hilarious gangs in that movie... like mimes and stuff.

I call the orphans. What a great/loser gang to be. Hey, seriously I'm an Ajax fan. He was great until he f*(ked up. Really, aside from the man, who could have taken him down???? No one.

My dad rented this movie for us back during my senior year of high school. I haven't stop making fun of him since.

I got Rollerball on DVD (fairly limited in easter eggs). I think it's somewhat amazing how much they got right by pegging corporate influence that long ago. And the sountrack just rocks!

I've gotta take a pass on any league participation right now. As much as I like the game, this is "busy season" for work right now & I barely have the time or energy to play anything on a consistent basis. I take occasional "posting breaks" but they aren't long enough to fit games into regularly.
