They just interviewed him on the ACC tournament telecast and he said he's a UNC fan. Thank God he didn't get the nomination or else I couldn't have voted for him. Lets Go Duke!

State rivalries are very unique in major college athletics -- three schools who have won multiple national championships in different sports, all within 30 miles of each other. It's very common in many North Carolina neighborhoods to be surrounded by fans of all three schools.

There are many intense rivalries in college athletics, but it's really hard to convey the intensity of these three rivalries to those who haven't experienced it.

Agreed, Vic. The schools also represent some old class struggles that still exist in a very real way.

As a Tarheel fan who grew up in Pennsylvania, I only saw the athletic side. Then, when I went to school in Chapel Hill, I got at least a glimpse of the social side. Old feuds die hard down there.

I married into it. My father-in-law did undergrad and med school at Duke, and both of his children are Tar Heels. There are also N.C. State folks in the extended family.

Problem is, none of 'em understand that college football is *far* more important than basketball.

When I'm there at Christmas or Thanksgiving, I'm pretty much lost. I'm thinking Bowl Games, Playoffs and going to the Dome, and all they can talk about is whether Coach K is the Archangel, or Evil Incarnate.

True, but it will come as a surprise to most people that Duke actually won an ACC football championship with Steve Spurrier as head coach. Mack Brown led the Tarheels to a top five finish one year, going 11-1.

And one nation where the value of a loved-ones life lost to an incompetent doctor is worthy of meaningful punishment, and another where no matter the how many times the doctor has killed someone his insurance is only required to pay out $200,000 per life.

If we stopped insuring the worst 10% of doctors (who are multiple defendants) the premium problem would be solved, but we’d rather point the political ugly stick at attorneys (it’s a lot more fun). I’m for going back to the way we used to solve it where if a doctor proved to be incompetent more than once the town nominated the most recent victim to distribute a little street justice.

I'm not for eliminating malpractice suits, it's just that Edwards has earned tens of millions of dollars specializing in a particularly odious form of malpractice suit - one where the doctor is almost never at fault, but can't prove it beyond doubt.

He's the poster child for higher health insurance rates, needless and painful c-sections, and driving good obstetricians out of practice.

Vegas: Yeah, but those things are so damn long in the past in our short-attention-span-theater world. Smack Brownie got to 11-1 in 1997, right? Spurrier's "Airball" offense got Duke a share of the title in 1989 with Virginia.

After that, you've got Fred Goldsmith's miracle year in 1994 for Duke and the .500-or-slightly-better Torbush years and the swift swan dive off a cliff that has been Bunting's run at UNC. Frankly, as a State fan, I'm enjoying seeing both drown. I'll throw 'em a concrete lifering, even. And with State basketball better than it has been in a long, long, LONG time (no matter your feelings for Herb, the team did good this year, aside from being swept by UNC-CH), it's been a pretty good time to be a State fan in that part of the country of late.
