The Five Great Players continues here! It is now time for the sophomore seasons and all five guys look to be in line for significant playing time this season. To get caught up check out the prior installments:

Here is a quick recap of last season for our guys:

QB Larry Bostic (UCLA) - Larry spent most of the season behind stud quarterback Roderick Parliman who had a great season. He learned a lot from him as his primary back up and is in line to take over as the Bruins starting quarterback this coming season. The Bruins managed to make it to the 2005 Orange Bowl only to be defeated by the Oregon Ducks for the 2nd time on the season.

Stats: 8-for-16, 138 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT, 151.1 passer rating // 8 carries, 58 yards, 0 TD.

RB Tommy Sherwood just had an amazing season for the Cardinal, who ended up winning the Capital One Bowl over the favored LSU Tigers. He was named the Pac-10 second-team running back and is in line to have another huge season! He was named player of the week an amazing TEN times! Look at the numbers he put up this season...

Stats: 299 carries for 1,609 yards (5.3 average), 18 touchdowns. 134 yards per game. 67 long. // 19 receptions for 199 yards and 3 more TD's. His longest reception was 30 yards.

WR Irv Montgomery (Michigan) played on the best team out of the five but didn't do much in his first season. He was behind now NFL players and college studs Ben Ellard and Brandon Nygaard. He was non-existent for much of the season but he is expected to step up and have a larger role this season with the Wolverines who look to finally capture that elusive national championship. They lost a heartbreaker to the Oklahoma Sooners last season. He will have stud QB Brian Swift back to throw him the ball this season as well.

Stats: Targeted 16 times, managed 6 catches for 181 yards (30.1 average), 87 long and 1 TD. He had two drops on the season.

DE Erik Manning (Miami) had a pretty weak season for starting every game for the disappointing Miami Hurricanes. He did have the pleasure of playing beside another stud freshman in Riddick Hutt who managed 8.0 sacks on the season. The good news is that the starting job will remain his and he needs to improve on the one sack he registered his opening season.

Stats: 31 tackles (8 assists), 1.0 sack. 10 tackles for loss, 7 hurries and 3 blocks.

CB Percy Lyon (Notre Dame) did a nice job in his limited role for the Irish. He was stuck behind some pretty darn good players but found a way to make at least a small impact. This season he will be either starting or playing a lot. Senior Roderick Jennings will start and he will split time with fellow sophomore and fellow stud Percy Walters. Both Walters and our Lyon had three picks last season with Jennings grabbing four.

Stats: 10 tackles (6 assists), 1 tackle for loss, 3 interceptions, 6 caught on him and he defensed 4 passes.

NCAA Game Spotlights - Week One

#10 Notre Dame 49 @ #23 LSU 3

The Notre Dame Irish just utterly dominate the Tigers on the road. The Irish "D" gave up just 5 rushing yards and 114 pass yards. Our CB Percy Lyon contributed 2 tackles to the cause. He did get the start and was in on 18 pass plays, he defensed two passes (which is just two shy of all last year) and a tackle for loss (which matches his total from last year). The most impressive thing is that he didn't allow one catch on him on the day. He and the Irish are off to a good start in 2006! The Irish move all the way up to #3 in the nation.

Eastern Michigan 14 @ #21 Stanford 42

No suprise here as the Cardinal pick up where they left off last year with a win over Eastern Michigan. Our RB Tommy Sherwood had a modest 31 carries for 85 yards and 2 touchdowns (1 and 8 yards) with a long run of 31 yards. He added one catch for just 2 yards. The story in this game was the new QB Joseph Cabrera who has been waiting for Erik Cunningham to retire and now gets his shot. Cabrera, who has seen very little action the past three seasons, managed 331 yards and 3 TD's on the day. The Cardinal get the respect they deserve by moving all the way up to #6!
