The FOFC All-Time NFL Team: Wide Receivers

**** VOTING CLOSED ****

First off, if you haven't already, check out the new webpage which shows the all-time team thus far.Click here for the FOFC All-Time NFL Team Page.

The NFL has an all-decade team. The NBA has an "official" list of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History. If there's enough interest, I thought we could create the FOFC All-Time NFL Team since football is what brought most people to this forum to begin with.

It works like this, I post a poll for each position, and classify players by their positions. Generally, all players will be listed by a position, not which side they play on or if they're strong side. FOFC voters pick enough players to fill a regular team. Check the link above to read previous results. If you do not agree with the nominees in the all-time position vote, please feel free to write-in your candidate. Some suggestions for other players are at the bottom of this thread.

FOFC selects:

3 Quarterbacks
4 Running backs
3 Tight Ends
5 Wide Receivers
4 Offensive Tackles
4 Offensive Guards
2 Centers
4 Defensive Ends
4 Defensive Tackles
5 Linebackers
4 Safeties
5 Cornerbacks
1 Kicker and Punter

Previous Results:

Quarterbacks finished 3/26/04. (Click above link to see results.)
Cornerback voting still in progress. LINK: http://dynamic2.gamespy.com/~fof/for...ad.php?t=23510

If I make any mistakes on the stats, let me know. Thanks.

Rice is #1 in receptions, #1 in receiving yards and #1 in receiving TDs... enough said.

2 write-ins:
Tim Brown
Marvin Harrison

I would have liked to include Swann for his 3 SBs, but not enough spots...

There is no reason Rice shouldn't be a unanimous selection, IMHO.

I think he may be the only unanimous selection. I don't think Joe Montana received enough votes to equal the total amount of voters in the QB poll. I can't think of anyone other than Jerry Rice who exemplifies a position. Maybe Walter Payton? Reggie White? Lawrence Taylor? Anthony Munoz?

I think at every other position there can be a legitemate discussion, but Jerry Rice is so insanely superior to those who came before him that there is no discussion, he absolutely towers over othe WR's in every statistical category. Add in the fact that he's been a class act, and been to the Super Bowl 5 times - and always been a postseason performer... and it's obvious there's no reason not to say he's the best.

Agreed with homer5000. Simply put Jerry Rice is the greatest combination of talent, work ethic, and longevity the NFL has ever seen. Anybody who takes part in this poll and doesn't vote for Rice has either been living under a rock for the past 20 years, or holds a serious, serious grudge against players from Mississippi Valley State.

You know what's so amazing to me even as much as his receiving stats? The amount of 16 game seasons. It's incredible how he's managed to stay so healthy. As Michael Irvin once said, he's Jesus in cleats.

dola,

Also coming back from that injury that probably would have caused about 99% of NFL players to retire at that age.

AgPete, nice list of players who define their position. You could probably add Ronnie Lott, John Hannah, and Ray Lewis to that list.

I'm glad to see he's in 3rd place, but Don Hutson really shouldn't be such a distant 3rd place given his contribution to the position. In my opinion, of course.

I'm fascinated by:

(1) The number and variety of write-ins for this position. I guess listing five gives you a lot of latitude... but I'm really surprised at how many players are being named.

(2) The amount of love veing given to Steve Largent. Good heavens - more votes than Don Hutson? Twice as many as Charlie Joiner? Oh, dear.

I think there's probably some age bias here. I know that I only voted for players who I remember seeing play. (In this case, I voted for Rice and Largent.)

And I think Anthony Munoz is the only guy who comes close to Rice as exemplary of his position. After him, Montana and Jim Brown are probably the other two that are 'tops,' but even then there is tremendous dispute over who the top players at their position are.

I tend to agree that Steve is getting a bit too much love in this poll, but in his defense he held several major receiving records at the time of his retirement. Certainly one of the all-time bests, but I'd rank Hutson above him.

I watched Largent every Sunday for a good chunk of his career, and (IMO) he had few peers. Beyond the stats - which are pretty darn impeccable - he was simply a wizard at running patterns. Zorn or Krieg would go back to pass, move in the pocket, throw deep downfield, and there'd be Largent on a post or corner or deep out with the cornerback completely out of the picture.

So I have no issue with his votes (but voted for Rice and Hutson, too).

So far three people have made a list of the five greatest recievers in NFL history and managed to not include Rice. Maybe they're members of the Pro Football Writer's Association.
