Why didn't I do this before now?

My birthday was yesterday, and I asked the little lady (actually not so little right now since she's 5 months pregnant, but anyhoo) for a wireless network.

I set it up last night and all I can say is "Holy crap, this is awesome!"

I have the day off of work today (well it's one of the "I'm working from home" kind of things) so I'm outside in the perfectly beautiful weather surfing the net on my laptop, having a beer, and smoking a cigar.

This rocks!

I was afraid that I'd see some internet slowdown or have connection problems, but this works so well out of the box I may never surf the net up in my home office again! I highly recomment it for anyone who may be contemplating it.

BTW, I got the Linksys wireless g router and notebook card.

I have been wireless for over a year at the house, and I refuse to go back, and the wife is actually thankful cause she can see me now!

Good choice, Happy belated birthday, and enjoy

KWhit, I would suggest making sure that your network is secure. If you have an unprotected wireless network, it's like a great big neon sign for bandwidth leechers, and your ISP may not view that with as much enthusiasm as you do.

I'm sure you know that, but I wanted to pass it along anyway.

Shhhhh!!! Chris and I are going to sneek over to his house with a wireless lap-top and mess with him.

One of my friends has been on a wireless network for free for like 8 months now. In his building alone he got 3 different networks that werent protected. While he has no malicious intent with the peoples home computer, its their fault for leaving the bandwith out there.

It's also his fault for stealing.

I only have one (of the 5 computers in the house) that is connected. The cable modem works perfectly for me, with the proper security settings and a Linksys firewall/router. If I had more than, that would be a different story.

Yeah, yeah. That guy should never have talked about it. He should have just said, "It looks like we get free wireless internet in this complex" and let it go at that.

I didn't opt for wireless networking because I figured there were already enough RF signals flowing through our house and bodies without introducing a new transmitter into our lives.

Wait for a month when the cable bill hasn't been paid and the internet stops working...

Or I suppose it's possible (though I've never heard of this) that the apartment complex has some kind of internet fee built into the rent, but again, I've never seen that.

Hopefully someone with more actual knowledge will chime in.

My College uses linksys. Works great but I use the cable out of the wall because it goes faster we are on a t1 so I dont know if that makes a diff. But I use the wireless if I wanna chill in a friends room.

if you are college only has a t1 then it doesn't really matter much if you are on wireless or wired ethernet.

t1 = 1.5mbps
most wireless LANs = 11 megabits shared.
Wired LANs = anywhere from 10mbps shared to 100mbps switched.

i supposed wired v. wireless could matter if you are sharing files locally.
