Geneforge 2

I'm playing through this game again, and reminded how much I like it, and the original. It's available for Mac and Windows, and the company that puts it out, Spiderweb, is a really cool small shareware company that does some excellent games. All of them are very old-school graphically though, so be warned. The role-play and fun values are very high though.

Never played the sequel, but I played the original a while back and was very pleasantly surprised. Great game..one of the better RPGs I'd played in recent years. Great atmosphere, and wasn't your normal run of the mill storyline.

I'll have to try out the sequel sometime. I could never get into Avernum for some reason though..just didn't grab me. Definitely a company worth supporting though.

I just glanced at the website. If Geneforge 2 has a demo, I'll have to give it a shot. I'm always looking for fun RPGs.

Both GF 1 and 2 have a demo. Basically you download the whole game, and you get to demo 25% of it. You have to pay for it (only $25) if you want to play the rest, which you probably will by then.

Are there any other companies out there, like spiderwebsoftware?

Not ones that have as long a track record of good RPGs that I'm aware of.

Went ahead and downloaded this last night. I wonder if there's going to be a part 3 to the series and all...? In any case, eager to get started. I might just dish out the $ for this bad boy.

Yeah, I think the author of the games has said there is going to be a Geneforge 3. Honestly, I recommend that you try GF 1 first, there's a lot of story stuff in GF2 that will make a lot more sense if you've played the first one.

Hm, haven't gotten around to downloading GF1 yet. A continuing story, I'm guessing? I'll give it a shot. I'm a bit torn between the GF series, and that one 'Devil Whiskey' game that was posted in another thread, here in this forum. Maybe I'll get both. Erg! There goes my tax refund money.

Well you can play the demos of GF 1 and 2 for free, that's probably 20+ hours of free gaming right there. I played the demo of Devil Whiskey and it wasn't my cup of tea, maybe you'll like it better.

There's one thing I do have to say about the GF series though - it brought back some memories of my days playing Ultima 6. I'll probably lean towards picking this series up and all.

As for Devil Whiskey - I haven't downloaded the demo yet. It looks somewhat like one of those old school AD&D games, like Eye of the Beholder or something from the Bard's Tale series. Might check that out later on!

Yeah Devil Whiskey was designed as a modern update of Bard's Tale, it's pretty much exactly the same game, even with all the old-style movement like in Wizardry and other games.

I went ahead and picked up both Geneforge and Geneforge 2. Luckily for me, they operate PST as I do...and ordering 15 minutes before 6pm (when their office closes), I get my code within 5 minutes.

Talk about one heck of a quick response time!

Hate to make some people unhappy (which I'm sure I will )

I'm a member of RealArcade through RealPlayer, which is $5.95 per month, and I got GeneForge 2 as my free game (you get to download (and keep) one game per month, for the $5.95). Download and instant install.

Definitely worth the $6 I paid for it.

Yuck, they'd have to pay me at least $6 a month for me to put that RealPlayer crap on my computer.

Last night I was bored and I'm waiting until Sacred is patched a little more before I play that game. So, I was craving a RPG and I remembered what everyone said in this thread and downloaded the original Geneforge. The look is so old school, but the gameplay is just so much fun. The story is very engrossing so far. Also, I like the idea of supporting a small indie company. Time to send them my order and go play the demo a few more hours today. I have to agree with others that this one of the better RPG's I've played in quite a long time. I'm very pleasantly surprised.

I'm immediately reminded of the old school 'Ultima' series that I used to crave playing back in the day. The guy's pretty quick to respond and stuff. Just don't forget to save your preferences .DAT file as a backup copy, in case you plan on re-installing the game on another machine or what not!
