Cubs/Red Sox - Which Fans Have Suffered More?

Interesting special on ESPN2 right now debating the topic.

I am obviously biased but the Cubs have not been to the World Series since 1945! I would give my left nut just to reach the World Series much less go to a game 7 in the World Series.

Discuss.

HBO has a special on the Red Sox too, way better than the one on ESPN. I think its worse to make the 7th game of the world series and lose like the Red Sox have then not make it at all and just suck like the Cubs have for years. There are 4 numbers that can easily explain the Red Sox suffering: 1986.

I'd say anyone who routes for someone besides Chicago and Boston have suffered more for having to deal with the incessant whining

I've always been amazed at people who think Cubs fans have even suffered more than other Chicago baseball fans.

Consider. In the last 86 years:
Cubs: 10 playoff appearances, 6 World Series.
White Sox: 6 playoff appearances, 2 World Series. One of which they intentionally lost.

On top of that, the Cubs play in one of the most beautiful parks in the major leagues. The White Sox... um, don't. Comiskey was OK, but the new park should be the leading candidate to serve as the nation's nuclear waste disposal site.

I grew up near Chicago and knew a bunch of Cub fans. They may claim to suffer, but I doubt most of them even care if they're winning or losing as long as the sun is out and the beer vendors are getting to their section.

I think the Red Sox have done more to shoot themselves in the foot throughout their history than any other baseball club.

Agree, esp. from Cubs fans. Believe me Cubbies, you have no sympathies from many fans. Your "lovable losers" phrase got tired decades ago and it really doesn't matter if you win or lose so quit making a big @%#$! deal out of it.

Cubs. I'm so tired of hearing about the Red Sox's whining. It's their own damn fault they traded away Babe Ruth. Although after last year I dont feel I as a Cubs am suffering. I believe that they will go all the way this year...a belief that I haven;t had in a long time.

Man i am so sick of Buckner getting reamed by the national press every goddamn year. No one talks about two singles to lead the inning off, no one talks about the wild pitch to tie the game up, no one talks about the fact that Buckner had no knees and shouldn't have even been playing first at that point in the game (as had been the case all year).

We (Boston/New England) forgave him a long long time ago. He got a standing ovation when he returned to Fenway. Boston has moved on, why can't the national media? It overshadows what was an amazing career for Buckner. Almost a career .300 hitter and he almost had 3000 hits. But when the Yankees play the Red Sox on a national broadcast what are we going to see over and over? Buckner. Move the fuck on

Any TV special, writer, or analyst that mention a curse in a serious manner, like Dan Shaughnessy, when discussing either team should be ignored. The curses are the dumbest thing going in sports.

Two more things. The score was TIED when it happened. And, they only let him in the game because they wanted him on the field when the assumed championship happened (respect for a vet).

And one more thing after that. It was Game 6, not Game 7. Buckner didn't lose the Series, the whole team lost it the next day...

It's all much like how Steve Bartman didn't blow that game for the Cubs.

Everyone ceases to mention Alex Gonzalzes ROUTINE GROUNDER HE BOTCHED.

I don't wanna' hear anymore about Bartman or Buckner. They didn't blow huge leads. Their teams did.

That post seems to contradict itself. You imply that Gonzalez should be blamed for his error, but Buckner shouldn't for his. I would say that Buckner, Bartman, or Gonzalez should not bear the entire blame for either of those losses. I do think that the two people that get paid obscene amounts of money to make routine plays should take some heat. I'm not saying that Buckner should get any more, he's definitely had more than his fair share.

Which fans have suffered the most? The rest of us. Fans of every other team (except Yankee fans) have suffered by having to listen to the constant whining and media adoration of the Cubs and Red Sox. BOOOOOORING.

Part of me wants them to win, so it will be the end of it. Then again, if they did win I think it would be insufferable. I am torn...

Red Sox fans have. They have to listen to each other. As a lifelong Cubs fan, I don't think I have ever whined or bitched about losing a single time. I have bitched about the Tribune Company on more than a few occasions but the only time I 'suffer' as a baseball fan is when I have to listen to a Red Sox fan complain.

I think Boston fans are more whiny, but that's probably because the Sports Guy brings it into my computer about 10 times a year.

Also, I can't help but notice that Boston has been/is home to Tom Brady and the modern Patriots and Larry Bird and the 80's Celtics. And it's not like the Red Sox have been that bad. I wish that my city had such sports success.
