Thumbs up ping: Pixies fans (as in Frank Black and Kim Deal, not sprites and fairies)

Anyone planning on hitting the reunion tour? I'm so anxious for NYC area dates that I can't stand it. The first real dates from the fall tour went on sale (Atlanta) and sold out in minutes - they've added another show.

I honestly think this band could do a 7 night stand at Roseland in NYC if they want. The ticket demand is going to be absolutely insane.

the dates so far (this falls after a lengthy european tour):

Pixies Fall Tour Dates:
September 4 - Les Schwab Amphitheatre, Bend, OR
September 6 - Bumbershoot, Seattle, WA
September 18 - Austin City Limits, Austin, TX
October 14 - Fox Theatre, Atlanta, GA November
November 11 - Wilkins Auditorium, Minneapolis, MN
November 13 - Aragon Ballroom, Chicago, IL
November 24 - Arrow Hall, Toronto, Ontario

also, i heavily recommend checking out http://www.pixiesmusic.com it's a great site.

They did not have this part of the tour planned a few weeks ago. Time to start making arrangements.

well, that's a little tough to read but you get the point.

I'm just worried I'm gonna miss the on-sale announcement and then they'll be sold out by the time I find out. I signed my self up to get email updates from that website when tour dates are added... I will take no chances.

tix for the chicago date went on sale today and sold out instantly. They put 2 additional shows on the stop and we were able to land tix to the 2nd show. Nov 14th I believe... the countdown is on.

I am probably going to go to the Fox theater (havent been there since 84 or so). I can pick you up on the way Bryan.

BTW, how fucked up is it that the Pixies will play anywhere in Iceland and not DC.

DAMN YOU FRANK BLACK (nay, Black Francis) AND YOUR WONDERFUL MUSIC

I had the chance to see Frank Black solo when he came through Milwaukee about 2 years ago. It was at shank hall... a venue of about 100 capacity... just awesome. I hope Frank keeps rocking after this short reunion stint.

I might go if I get a chance... (too bad for me, all the dates are pretty far away though...)

I think there's a good chance they will play DC when all is said and done. My guess is they will be adding dates heading up the east coast to fill the gap between the Atlanta and Chicago shows.

No nostalgic speeches were made. No $250 golden-circle tickets were sold. Nothing the Pixies said or did Tuesday night at the Fine Line Music Cafe suggested they were playing their first-ever reunion concert _ and that, of course, made the show all the more special.

The T-shirts on sale called it the “Pixies Sellout” tour, but the truth is the Boston band that helped give birth to the early-’90s alternative rock boom could have done a lot more to milk its first public gig in 11 years.

Tickets originally sold for $30 were going for as much as $400 on EBay. Judging from the 500 or so fans who were lucky (or rich) enough to get in, the quartet could have charged twice that amount and gotten away with only playing half of the 27 songs in Tuesday’s setlist.

Actually, there were a lot of noticeable omissions in the fast-paced, 90-minute performance. Like many groups who split up less than amicably, the Pixies stuck mainly to early recordings _ from when things were still fun and innocent in the band.

Only one song from each of its two final albums were played, while three-quarters of its first two LPs and even a big chunk of its little-heard 1986 debut EP were offered. It didn’t matter, though. The crowd howled along to obscure oldies such as “Broken Face’’ and “Levitate Me” as readily as it did to latter staples such as “Here Comes Your Man” and “U Mass.” The only song that wasn’t widely recognized Tuesday was a cover of Neil Young’s “Winterlong,” which tells you a little something about the primary age and record collection of the Pixies’ cult fan base.

This truly was a reunion concert Gen-X style, something the kids of boomers have really only experienced with one other band, Jane’s Addiction (which has unfortunately milked its reunions). The Pixies pre-dated the post-Nirvana days when cool alternative bands got played on FM radio, so there really weren’t “hits” to play. That left them to terrific, deep-album cuts such such as “No. 13 Baby’’ and “La La Love You,’’ the latter of which was introduced by bassist Kim Deal as “one we never, ever played live.”

The few other comments made by the bandmembers fit the self-deprecating tone of the T-shirts. When frontman Frank Black/Black Francis (real name: Charles Thompson) struggled to tune his guitar before “Vamos,’’ he remarked, “This is starting to seem like our first gig.’’

There were some assorted missteps, too: a botched bass part in “Tame,” an out-of-tune “Velouria,’’ and the poorly paced encore lagged except for a singalong version of “Where Is My Mind?’’ On the other hand, Francis’ scream of a voice was in great shape, and he and Deal _ who were at odds with each other all these years _ could still harmonize like best buddies. Thankfully, though, that’s as close as they got to appearing sentimental.

I think i pretty much have to get Philly tickets in case they decide to not play New York for some bizarre reason.

edit: And it's a Saturday, so that's totally doable for me anyway.

their also on day one of this years Lalapalooza, but the schedule is pretty weak. Looks like lalapalooza is only hitting 15 or so cities this year.

Still one of the best shows i have ever seen was primus, pixies, and janes addiction in 1990.

That's pretty interesting, since Frank Black alone was playing at a Tower Records in Chicago for free maybe sometime last year. The place was pretty full, but not packed or anything. I don't know if it's the fact that it's a full concert, or the name recognition of the Pixies.

The shows and the recordings are fantastic (good) but the pixies are playing very rehersed and regimented. The same songs played at different shows run for virtually the same lenght, which pretty much matches their studio work. For those of us who like live performances for their individuality, this would be the bad. Perhaps the band will loosen up a little as the tour goes on. I would like to see some freelancing.

Big reason I tend to be apathetic about shows from bands who aren't into the live scene as much. Haven't been able to convince myself to put down the dough for the Pixies yet based on lukewarm reviews thus far.

Bry,

everything hear is that you will get good music if you go to a show. you may not get much showmanship, and the set lists are not varied enough to make several shows.

Not so much showmanship I'm interested in (to a certain degree), but I'm interested in intensity...when I see a show that everyone else on the tour has seen, it can feel a bit cookie-cutter.

Hey, I danced my ass off to Aretha Franklin singing "Freeway of Love" once upon a time as well...the woman still has it.

You guys know about this, right?

PIXIES have written and recorded their first new song for thirteen years, and will release it tonight [ Published: 14-06-2004-15-07] through the Internet.

'Bam Thwok' will go on-sale for 99 cents at midnight (June 15) exclusively on Apple's iTunes Music Store.

Written by bassist Kim Deal, the track was produced and recorded by the band at Stagg Street Studios, Los Angeles, in March.

Clocking in at 2 minutes 35 seconds, the lyrics for 'Bam Thwok' came from an art book Deal found on a city street while on tour a few years ago.

She said: "From the handwriting, you could tell that this book must have belonged to a little kid. This kid had written a short story, a paragraph really, about a party that took place in another universe, about people and monsters that were partying together. That's what provided the inspiration for the lyrics."

The chorus features the lyrics: 'Love. Bang. Crash. Wakka, Wakka, Bam Thwok'.

Deal added: "It's a song about loving everyone... showing goodwill to everyone."

A carousel-esque organ solo also features in the track, which was performed and recorded by guitarist Joey Santiago's father-in-law many years ago, when he was doing missionary work in the Philippines.

'Bam Thwok' was arranged and rehearsed at Santiago's home studio.

Singer Frank Black said: "Recording it was a nice way for us to break the ice after twelve years. The recording process was very relaxed and it didn't feel like twelve years had passed."

Pixies are currently touring Europe, and return to the UK for the T In The Park festival on July 11 and the V Festival over the weekend of August 21/22.

The band recently played a rapturously-received four-night sold-out stint at London Brixton Academy (June 2-5).

looking over at the frank black site it appears that the song was just dropped on itunes without any notice or pub. it took the fans a little while to find it.

Decent song, but no masterwork.
