Getting Cheap FAs?

I noticed that after the amateur draft and late free agency, the computer teams can sign some good starters for cheap $600K/1yr. contracts. People like Warren Sapp, Casey Hampton, Jamal Lewis, and Mark Brunell. Is there any way I can do this too? It seems like they're all gone before I can look at them again. I'm asking because I lost my whole defensive line this past offseason due to them asking for too much money.
