Major League Pitchers

I want to see what the opinion on the board is of babying pitchers like crazy lately. I really think managers are overcomplicating the game and probably confusing themselves with these numerous damn double switches, middle relief left specialists who can only get one guy out, and not getting enough use out of their starters. Art Howe has this ridiculous obsession with taking out starting pitchers who are rolling. Latest such stupidity: Tom Glavine, 7 IP, 1H, 2K, 1BB, 78 pitches, taken out of a 2-0 game and now the pen is in the process of blowing the game. UGH!!!!

I definitely believe in pitch counts with regards to inexperienced pitchers. Tom Glavine doesnt exactly qualify. I have no idea why Howe would pull him from the game in that situation unless there was some minor injury.

I realize your frustration with howe, believe me i do, i had to put up with him as the a's skipper for along time and there were some real bonehead moves on his part. apparently though, in this case, glavine's arm was tightening up on him and he wanted to come out:

"At my age there is a certain amount of pain every time you got out there," he said. "But after the sixth inning (the shoulder) tightened and it felt like it was a lot more laborious in that seventh inning than it was in the other innings."

I agree with the sentiments, though I don't know enough about the particular example cited to comment on it.

Well, thankfully Glavine asked out due to a sore shoulder. The only reason I say thankfully is that I can say with some confidence that Art Howe isn't completely brain dead.
