So where will Kerry Collins end up?

He hasn't been cut yet, but there is a rumor of him landing in Dallas. My bet is Pittsburgh, as he's from Pennsylvania and went to Penn State. I think Maddox is toast.

I don't think the Steeler scenario will happen. I would think that Collins would get more than a 750K salary.

Possibly Arizona, or like ESPN said, Oakland.

Didn't Pittsburgh draft Ben Roethlisburger (sp?)? And they already have Maddux and Batch on the roster...

I don't see him ending up in Dallas... but I suppose anything's possible. I'm sure he'd love the chance to play his old team twice a year.

I could see him ending up in Oakland. Maybe Miami?

You know, Maddox may have been the only one in the COUNTRY not to see the Steelers were going after a QB in the draft!

Dallas and Oakland make by far the most sense.

Dallas has ackonowledged that they want to bring in a veteran - and I think Collins makes more sense than Testaverde, particularly since former Giants O.C. Sean Payton is in Big D.

Oakland makes sense because of the Gannon injury.

I guess Baltimore would be 3rd based on the fact that he'd be a definite upgrade as a backup and Jim Fassell is a consultant there.

Of course what we have to ask is what do the Cowboys and Raiders have to offer in a trade for Collins... which one of them is in a better position?

Yep. More to the point, Collins has a huge cap figure this season, and is refusing to re-negotiate. I'm surprised he hasn't been released already, unless the Giants are trying to find a trade partner... but everyone knows they have to dump him, and most teams would be happy to just compete for his services in free agency.

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if he's cut before training camp too.

That appears to be the case. Usually I'm all for this, but with an offense as talented as the Giants currently is, it seems like a waste of the 2004 season.

I was hoping that he was going to go to the Cowboys, but I heard a blurb on the radio saying that "it didn't look likely." I didn't get to hear the reasoning behind this statement, though...

He and Jeff Garcia are almost the same quarterback... I don't see SF doing this for a number of reasons... one of which is that the current ownership out there is doing everything possible to guarantee the team will suck this year.

How are they the same QB? I don't see that at all.

Aging veterans with a pretty decent, but not necessarily great, track record... I wasn't really commenting on their style of play.

With Tim Couch and Kurt Warner on the market, it's going to be tough for these guys to find starting jobs.

None of them are going to find starting jobs. Collins is a better QB than Couch, and I think most teams will see it that way.

Collins isn't all that old, just 31 (turns 32 late December). He's still got a 4-5 year contract in him.

I think he'll be forced to sign as a backup this year, and then will be the starter there or elsewhere in 2005.

To me, Couch is a waste of time. Warner might have the hardest time finding a job of any of them.

If they cut him now, all of his cap hit will be taken on this season. If they wait and cut him, some of it will be taken this season, with the rest going against next season's cap.

That's not what I read. I read somewhere (don't have a link now...) that they take the full cap hit this year either way, because this is the last year of the deal.

You're wrong. Since he only has 1 year left on his contract (the 2004 season), it doesn't matter if they cut him today, next wednesday or after June 1st.

I'm doubtful that Collins goes to Dallas, unless the Cowboys are considering on giving up on QC. I don't think Dallas is and I don't think Collins would want to go where he would definatly act as a mentor/backup. Which is what Testaverde would be perfect for.

I think he might end up in Oakland.

What about Green Bay? He wouldn't be a young guy to take over for Favre but he could be a solid #2 for them for 1-2 years

Why would he want to be a #2 for the rest of his career?

I think the rest of his career will be spent fighting for the #1 job wherever he goes and he lose more of those than he wins. He's solid sometimes, but what team is going to make him a #1 for the rest of his career?

Stats:

Baltimore seems like a logical choice. They are already a superbowl contender and Collins would probably do better than Wright or Boller. Warner is another possibility, although I do not have a lot of faith in that guy.

Forgot to mention how he was getting drilled on every play... If he finds a team with a solid line, he can do very well... If he gets into another offensive line situation like the Giants, then he'll do poorly.

I don't think choosing only 2003 as a season is fair to him.

2000, 2001, and 2002 were all pretty solid seasons. He definitely deserves another serious chance somewhere, even if it means riding the pine in 2004 before finding a better situation in 2005.

If he's in a situation where a starter goes down with an injury, he's the type who could potentially step in and steal the job.

Raiders baby! great backup if gannon goes down, and after next year when gannon is gone, he can hold the fort for a couple of years while we develop our QB of the future.

Frankly, I cannot belive that ANYONE would be willing to give Vinny Testa-mummy a job. As a backup or water boy.

Come on people he's older than the dirt they throw at the jets coaching staff and he's been beaten upon like a recalcitrant red-headed stepchild.

Talk about the single player in the NFL that should have retired a few years ago. Wow.

Frankly, if Collins were willing to come into Dallas as a backup role and a not-so-high contract, the Cowboys might have some interest, especially with the Sean Payton connection. But he's going to want a good bit more money than they'll pay and a chance at a starting position. As mentioned above, Oakland makes a lot of sense.

The Giants may as well count this as a lost season with Manning starting, which is probably making the Chargers even more excited about their trade with them. They may as well lose the season to his development though.

What? Collins is 6'5", a huge arm, a statue, better at the long ball. I would have to say they are as close to opposites as QBs as possible.

But even that didn't make much sense. Collins is about 4 years younger, doesn't have the injury history, and can easily play out a 5 year contract. To me there is no comparison, they're in very different situations.

It looks like the Dolphins think they are all set at QB... but that's the team that would present an outstanding fit. Collins is pretty decent at the play action pass, and I think he'd fit well as a starter on a team committed to running first. Oh, well.

I really feel he's going to fall victim to teams already having a full slate at QB.

He'd be an excellent backup for anyone. Shit, I wouldn't mind the Jets signing him at all. He wouldn't even need to move.

edit: And the more I think about that, the more that would be a good "last resort" for him. Sign a 1-year deal to be the Jets backup, stay local for one more year - then find an open starting job after the season and relocate.

I hope I hear that the Jets are at least interested. There's no viable backup there after Vinny gets released.

Giants are taking a big gamble here. Manning would benefit tremendously staying at #2 for a year. Giants have the offense to contend and Collins is a free agent after the season anyway. If the season went south you could still play Manning.

I guess they want to make that 2005 1st rounder worthwhile for the Chargers, eh ?
