Underrated overrated bands

This may not make sense, but what bands do you feel are underrated that most people think are overrated? The one that springs to my mind is Oasis. Everyone I talk to think they are the most overrated band of the last decade, but I think they're seriously underrated. I think they just come off as pretentious, so everyone says "oh, they aren't really that good." I know people who have all the albums who think they are overrated. Why have the albums then? That would be like if I bought My Big Fat Greek Wedding and said how much I hated it.

So, which band do you think doesn't get enough "love" but people tend to think is overrated?

This is inspired by the guitar riff thread... I think D'you Know What I Mean has some damn fine guitar going on.

Creed: They sing the same song over and over again, and people think they are really deep. They are painful to listen too. Rap is better, and I hate rap. (most of it)

The Strokes. When they first came out I joined in on the 'what's the big deal' bandwagon, but then I heard the record and I couldn't believe how cool the songs were. Their second album is great, too.

I think that would be an example of an overrated underrated band, or just an overrated band...but not an underrated overrated band. This is about bands that the general public thinks are overrated, but you actually think are underrated.

I'd throw Dave Matthews Band on my list. I'm not sure why everyone slags on them, but to me, they are some of the most talented musicians out there, and their music is different. When Under the Table and Dreaming first came out, they sounded like no one else.

You know, another way to put this thread is...please justify why you like bands everyone else hates!

Snow Patrol. They're not that rated yet, but they'll be over-rated in no time, and really, they'll still be under-rated, that's how cool they are.

Oh, you mean like Michael Bolton!

Never really heard anybody say that they liked him, but if that were really the case he would have dissappeared along time ago (like Christopher Cross!)

I concur. Nirvana bashing is just easy nowadays. In a similar vein, I think Pearl Jam took a lot of the backlash when they aren't that bad. And I'm not really a grunge fan.

Actually I would agree. Her second album was quite solid, but to most people she'd pretty much dropped off the face of the earth at that point.

I'd agree with Dave Matthews Band. I guess they get a bad rap because of the stereotype that most of their fans are preppy, white fratboys and/or pothead, hippies. The band is incredibly talented for a "pop act" and they're (at least they were) amazing live.

DOLA, Pearl Jam too... I guess you could see their popular decline coming when they went against MTV and Ticket Master. Then they pretty much turned away from pop with Vitality and alienated a lot of fans...

One band who I think in recent years has been somewhat trashed has been Hootie and the Blowfish. Personally, I think they were a pretty good band for they did and over 10 million people did buy their first album. And Fairweather Johnson, although not as commercially sucessful was still a solid album.

I think Pearl Jam perfectly fits this thread. Most people got so caught up in the fact that their 2nd and 3rd albums didn't sound like Ten that they missed out on a few of the best albums of the 90's.

people are always slagging off on Green Day... for selling out, for having an insanely popular album, etc etc etc. They sold 10 million+ copies of Dookie and have had 3 solid albums since and had 2 solid albums prior to Dookie. People seem to figure that since Dookie was so popular that they've got to be overated when in fact they are a very good band (in my oppinion of course).

Yoshimi battels the pink robots - way, way overreated (it just rode the coattails of the critically acclaimed The Soft Bulletin, and got more initial attention than that album )

Hey, do you guys like The Von Bondies? I liked their song "C'mon C'mon" on MVP and then I heard it 'exclusive to 97.3Z in Cincinnati". Visited their website, pretty cool but the music video is weird as fuck and they may be more rockish than I tend to enjoy.

It's more rockin' and stripped down. He doesn't have the best voice to begin with, but it's in all of its creaky glory on this one. Not at all what I was expecting.

one vote is Nickelback, who I think is a very solid band even though they get bashed both for their annoying lead singer, and their similarities to Creed. I didn't want to like them, but I do.

I would also say several classic bands - Stones, Floyd, Van Halen, Zep are all both underrated and overrated enough to fit the bill.
