Romance of the Three Kingdoms

It's been awhile since I've played this KOEI series. I remember playing it on my 386 back in the day. Apparently it is now on Version 9. I always liked KOEI's turn based strategy games like R3K and Nobunaga's Ambition for the ole SuperNES.

So I was out looking to buy a new turn based strategy game in the Medieval Oriental genre and read a bunch of different reviews. It sounds like R3K 7 was an excellent version of the game (cheap now, too). If anybody else is into these types of games, could you give me some guidance on which version of R3K is the best? If none, what other games might you suggest?

I own R3K 7 and have to say that's it definately a worthy addition to the series, building on the things they started with 4, as in the magic like things. The ability to create entire families is nice, and you can even add members to an existing family. The 95+ intelligence thing is still an issue, as when you have an advisor with that they aren't wrong. I haven't played it in awhile, but I would say that if your into these type games, it's definately worth buying, especially cheap. I paid for it when it came out, and can't say that I was disappointed at all. I wish I could give more details, but like I said, it's been awhile since I fired it up, so I can't really recall details about the battle system and such. I would say avoid the first scenario, especially if you play Liu Bei, entirely too easy to play ahistorical and get all the good generals before their loyalty is up after they get recruited. If you'd like more details, I'm willing to fire it up and answer any questions you might have.

Dola,

As to which is best, or maybe toughest, the very first one doesn't have that 95+ intelligence thing, which makes the game MUCH harder. Also...you can get that game for the puter if you know where to look, and if you don't know where to look, PM and I'll certainly tell you.

Also, version 3 was pretty enjoyable for me back when I had it on sega, the snes version was bugged. It's also easily attainable.

Yet another dola,

One thing that's nice about R3K7 is that you can play as ANY character in the game, from a top warlord like Cao Cao or Liu Bei, to the lowliest weakling who does whatever their told to do, which makes it rather interesting. I played an entire game once using a created heir to Liu Bei, and guided the AI to dominate the landscape, until such time as I inherited the throne before completing our conquest of China. The ending was rather interesting...

Thanks for the recap. I think that I will go ahead and try to find R3K7. I'm not sure if it is available for PC, or if I have to go for the PS2 version, but it sounds like something that I will enjoy.
