Ping: Pittsburgh Pirates fans

An honest question here, no tweaking intended, honest.

Knowing what you know now about the way Alvarez pitched today, and assuming that Stynes' infield single was an independent event, and nothing about the rest of the way the game went would have changed for the Pirates offensively (i.e., no more baserunners), would you rather Stynes had the single, and the game ended the way it did...or would you rather had Alvarez get Stynes out and finish a perfect game?

Just curious. I know if I had been at Dodger Stadium, and the shoe had been on the other foot, given the choice between seeing a 1-hit shutout or a perfect game, I'd probably have preferred the perfect game. I've seen 1-hit shutouts before, but the closest I've ever come to 'seeing' a no-hitter was listening to the one Nomo threw in Coors on the radio back in '96 (or was it '95?).

I do not think anyone wants to be on the reception of a perfect game. However, with the hit coming in the 6th inning I do not think it matters much. It would be a different story if it would been in the bottom of the 9th. Where the hell did Wilson Alvarez come from? I thought he retired.

By the way, I am not a Pirate fan - just an impartial observer.

Well, no. Nobody goes to the ballpark and says "Damn, I hope the other team throws a perfect game today." But at the same time, if you gotta lose, and you're at the ballpark, might as well see something special, IMO.

As far as what might have happened, you're right - anything *could* have.

Which is why I was careful to lay out specific conditions, which you then ignored in your reply.

A few points. First, I'm glad Stynes got on base to disrupt the perfect game. I see the logic behind the "rather lose and see a perfect game than lose and see a one hitter" argument, and it makes sense; but personally, I don't want my team to be on the receiving end of any type of perfect game...but maybe thats' just me. Secondly, I'm not sure Alvarez would have lasted the rest of the game, as it was his first start of the year. The Pirates announcers on TV even talked about how that baserunner probably made the decision on Jim Tracy alot easier, whether to take Alvarez out or leave him in to try for the perfect game. Lastly, if I'm the scorekeepers, Hernandez is charged with an error on the play. Sure, it wasn't a "routine" play, but Hernandez was there in plenty of time and easily had a glove on it.

We had the unfortunate disadvantage of having Hernandez on our team for the 2nd half of last season, all he did was K. I can't remember him hitting two homeruns all year, none the less two in one game. Argh!

What I am ASKING is, GIVEN THE CHOICE. There is NO. OTHER. OPTION. for the question that I'm asking.

I am stipulating that, for the purposes of this question, it is EITHER/OR.

Which would you have preferred?

Now, I apologize for losing my temper, but for the love of God, people, I've said this twice now, and you people keep saying "There's no guarantee that he would have." I KNOW that. That has nothing to do with what I'm asking.

Hopefully tomorrow we can turn the discussion around and talk about Ryan Vogelsong blanking the Dodgers with a no-hitter.
While I'm at it, I also wouldn't mind hitting the Powerball jackpot tonight

I'll be at the game tonight, so I'll fill you in if anything interesting happens. Nomo vs. Vogelsong. Both ERA's over 6 I believe. Should be a nice old fashioned 10-9 barnburner...

I'm with ya, SA. Sure, I'd hate to see my team lose, but if they do, I want to see them do it in style. Sure, futility sucks, but I would love to be witness to a perfect game even if it was against the team I was rooting for.

The best game I ever went to, Eric Milton took a perfect game into the 7th and a 13-0 lead before almost completely falling apart, giving up something like 9 straight base runners between him and the pen and almost losing. Royals left the bases loaded in the 8th or else it would have been very uncomfortable for them. The final was something like 13-7.

I take the Stynes hit. First off, that is a rare event in itself, but next, the only perfect game I care to see is one thrown by the Pirates.

I was in my seat less than 5 minutes when the announces goes over the Pirates lineup....starting in right field, and batting 4th, Rob Mackowiak
I would leave the 4-spot blank before batting Mackowiak there.
Then he prompty hits a few hard balls and makes a great leaping catch just to spite me.

At least the game was good. Silly Salomon Torres gives up the game of course, althouth Lloyd McClondon should have brought in the lefty to face the always dangerous Alex Cora.

Guillerimo Mota? When did this guy come out of the woodwork? He hit 98 with his fastball tonight out of the Dodgers pen. Yowzers.

Regardless of how cool it would be to say I was present when a perfect game was thrown...I'd rather not see it with my team on the receiving end. It was tough to make a call like this, because there's been only what, 15 perfect games ever? Still, I'd hate to see my team go down so hard.

Mota's been considered one of the top setup guys for the last two years or so. It's borderline unfair to other teams when they have to face Mota's heat and then Gagne bringing not just the heat, but that big, loopy curve and the 76 mph change.

Awesome stuff.
