music collecters: the most you've ever paid for an album/single?

As I sit here seriously considering buying a 7" vinyl single for $65, I realize I might be insane. For the time being, I've opted not to purchase the single in question (Ash - "Get Ready" & "Zero Zero" for the curious), but it just got me thinking about all the money I have spent on music in my life (mind boggling really).

I'm just curious if i'm the only music nut here. So I ask, what's the most money you've ever spent on one piece of music (be it album, single, whatever).

I spent $27.50 for one of the Pearl Jam fan-club only 7" singles from the early 90's at one point. And just a few months ago I spent $32 dollars to get my hand on a new CD - it was a Canada only release that I had to have purchased then mailed to me (the ablum was Petra Haden & Bill Frisell [self titled]).

So am I the only discografiend here?

I'll never forget: St Patrick's Day, 1998. Around noon, right before embarking on 12 hours of drinking, I stopped by the music store to pick up a new CD from my favorite artist. The guy there told me there was a special "Collector's Edition" available - essetially the same thing, but in a special tin. I think I paid $27 for it.

$27 for Van Halen III. I hate myself.

For a single album (non-bootleg, although the internet has made paying for bootlegs unnecssary these days, anyway), the most I've probably paid was $35-40 for an import version of something. I've got a few Japanese/German versions of albums that ran me anywhere from $25-40. Usually, this was to get one or maybe two "bonus" tracks not included on the US version.

I'm less likely to do that these days, since I can download those single tracks pretty easily, but there are a couple of bands whose albums I'm considering getting, and if I do, I will only be able to get them as imports, as they are not available in the US. They're running between $25-37 on amazon.com.

Albums are generally around the 12 pound mark... so $22 or so. There are a couple of bands I listen to who are often without a U.S. Label, so I order stuff from the UK pretty frequently.

Yeah, largely the internet has cut down on my more ridiculous purchases. I have pretty much given up on hunting down out of print singles and such as long as I can actually hear the song somewhere. But there are a few bands where I have every release, so as long as I still like the music their putting out, i feel compelled to keep up with everything.

Ash is the one current band I have who has no real U.S. label to speak of. Their last two albums have been released over a year after their actual UK release, and one of them butchered beyond recognition by the re-mixing and re-ordering of it. The fact that I just ordered their new album from the UK yesterday was what even got me on this topic...

For me, The Tea Party is one band that I love that doesn't have US distribution. Their past 3 or 4 albums have been released everywhere BUT here. Luckily, they're Canadian, so I come out ahead when I order from a Canadian website, even including S&H!

Freak Kitchen (think Nuno Bettancourt on steriods) is another band that I love, but in their case, I don't actually "own" any of their albums. They're from Sweden and have never released an album in the US. I've relied on copies of copies of copies from friends to complete my collection. One day I'm going to flip out and order what I can (not even the complete collection) from Amazon.com, but at $35 a pop, I haven't done it yet.

I have spent alot of money over the years on records. Mostly in the 50-100 dollar range on certain vinyl records but I have spent $275 on a Negative Approach 7" with hand colored cover (the band colored in some of them until they got bored less than 100 exist) . I could probably get alot more for it if I sold it.

yes. they just released their 5th album Tuesday (Meltdown). Their 3rd album (Nu-Clear Sounds) was absolutely butchered in the U.S., the 4th (Free All Angels) has the songs you've heard, and that one was also screwed with a bit, and given 2 bonus tracks in it's US release (the bonus tracks were b-sides from the album).

They release so many singles it's hard to keep up with. A total of 5 double-singles was relased off the last album alone... with like 20 b-sides in total. They also released a stand-alone single between the 4th album and their current (new) album.

Absolutely great band.


*note. The "double-single" then probably sounds a bit weird... and i think it's only commonplace in the UK (it's intention is basically to get you to buy 2 singles to help the band chart better). An example of such a release:

"Some Song" CD1
1. "Some Song" (radio edit)
2. Non-album track A
3. Non-album track B

"Some Song" CD2
1. "Somt Songe" (album version)
2. Non-album track C
3. Non-album track D


sales from both CD's count towards one position on the singles charts.

Spent about $40 on an old Funkadelic 12" one time, but it should have cost me a lot more. I used to run a club night while at university and must have spent about ... God, I hate to think how much I spent on records. Far too much. What irks me about records - at least in this country - is how stores get away with ripping people off. One place was charging about $50 for an old Nas record, and because it was hard to get people bought it in droves. I went to Beat Street records in NY and picked it up for $4.

And Ash? I hear they're finally cracking America, and good for them. I had something of a flashback after reading about the 'Get Ready' single. I loved 'Girl From Mars'. Summer nights, being sick on cider in my friend's bath tub... bliss ...

Heh, that's cool. I saw them in concert when they opened for somebody (can't remember who, maybe STD), and I thought they were pretty good.

1977 is a fantastic album. "Girl From Mars" was the song that got a number of my friends interested in them.

Definitely one of the best rock bands going. They were just high-schoolers when their first album came out, and they've pretty much improved with each release. And every b-side is great as well. They must write so much material, because each set of sessions seems to result in about 25 songs being released between the album and singles.

If they weren't so horribly mis-managed in the U.S., I think they could find some definite success here. Their labels seem to have treated them as an absolute afterthought. When an album doesn't even see U.S. release until a year after the original release date... it's pretty bad.
