F'in Termites!

Well as some of you may know I live on the grounds of a hospital in an apartment that is seperate from the hospital. Also, as some of you may know, I recently was promoted and as part of the promotion I determine which new doctors get the apartments that are available here (there are a limited number.)

Currently, there is one nice cottage available and three new incoming doctors that want it. I was trying to determine (with my boss's input) how to decide who should get the apartment. Just as I was about to make my decision today, I found out that my apartment building has a very serious termite infection. The Hospital's director of safety has quarantined my 2nd floor patio which is seperate from my apartment and told me that my building is ok for now, but it must be tented and fumigated. This is a very large building and the tenting/fumigation process will be very costly so the CEO has to approve it. Furthermore, he said that due to the damage the termites have done in the past, the building might be "condemned in the future."

So, I talked to my boss about this and he was like "oh f%*#" and he said I would have top priority on the one cottage that is available if I want it since I have seniority. I hate moving though, and Ms. Eaglesfan (she really hates the Eagles) hates moving even more. Now, I have to decide what to do. Do I move now while I know that the cottage is available? This would involve several weeks of hasty packing, or do I risk the building being ok to live in for 1-2 more years? I only want to live on these grounds for 1-2 more years before I purchase a house to move into and I hate the idea of moving twice in a two year period. Of course, I dislike the idea of this building becoming unsafe and needing to do an emergency move with possibly no apartment available on grounds to move into at some point in the future.

Bah. I must have moved 17 times in a four year period while I was flunking out of college. Suck it up and take the cottage.

Sorry to hear about the termites.

That's one good thing about living where I do. It's too far north for termites. The frost goes too deep into the ground and kills the little critters.

if you turn down the thermostat, the wood will harden... termites can't bite through hard wood (unless their in a sock)... problem solved.

I agree with you JeeberD, I really hate moving more then just about anything. Most of this building is brick. The main vulnerable spots are the patio, which the safety director has padlocked off and told me no one is to go on it, and the roof. It's the remote possibility of those buggers in my roof eating away at the wooden portions and causing it to collapse on me and my loved ones that have me considering moving. Of course if the safety inspection condemns the building, I will have no choice. However, I can't keep this cottage indefinitely on hold for myself. In fact, I had an email from one of the three doctors this evening, and I felt bad putting her off. If I can convince myself, or have someone convince me that this building will be safe to live in for 1 to 2 more years, then I would just stay here. When we moved here, my wife and I thought this would be our last place before we buy a house.

Well after talking to Ms. Eaglesfan, we are going to go look at the cottage tomorrow to make sure it appears in good condition. The cottage is only a few hundred yards away, so I'm a little worried the termites might be there as well. However, as long as it looks in good shape, we will be moving. However, we will spare most of the hassle of moving and hire professionals to pack most of our stuff and move it. Furthermore, since it was poor apartment care by the hospital which is responsible for the necessity to move, I'm going to attempt to get the hospital to pay for at least a portion of the moving costs.

Thats a good idea about getting the hospital to pay for a portion (or all) of your moving costs. Its on their premises, and because the problem wasn't taken care of at an early enough time to warrant a possible condemning of the building, it would seem only fair that they share some of the burden.

Well, I talked to my boss today, and now he isn't sure if I will be able to move into that cottage. He said something has come up, and he may need to move someone else into that cottage who ranks higher then me

He said he isn't sure about this and I will find out in the next few days, but this is very frustrating. I know that he holds me in fairly high regard and he has talked fairly extensively about my future with the institution, but this is going to be hard to forget if he starts going back on what he says. Hopefully, he will work this out and still get me that cottage or somewhere equally nice, because after all I've read on tenting and fumigation I don't want to live here anymore no matter how much I hate moving.

New Orleans Adolescent Hospital, which as you may know has very old buildings on its grounds.

Yeah--other than your proximity to Frankie & Johnnie's, there is not much to recommend that area.

Good luck with your housing situation. It would really suck if your boss hung you out to dry.

Frankie & Johnnie's is awesome. I think that place is responsible for at least 10 pounds gained in the last 2 years

Now, that I'm trying to lose weight that is one of the places that I limit myself to a maximum of once every other month.

My boss just called me (I'm on vacation for the next 7 days) and my move into the nice cottage was approved by the hospital board of directors. I can start moving after this weekend, and can have up to 2 weeks to vacate my old place. Ms. Eaglesfan27 and I are now very happy, even though I will have to do much packing during my vacation.

I just went and saw it (again, I also saw it before I put in my request) and it is so much nicer then our old place and will make having friends over a much more pleasant experience.
