Just posting it here as further information on the Bonds-steroid debate.

Early in his career, Bonds was more focused on speed training than strength training. In 1993, a 28-year-old Bonds began paying Farris to help him maintain the speed that was prominent during his early major-league success. It seemed to work as Bonds stole an average of 33.2 bases over the next five seasons. But in 1998, Bonds went for bulk over speed, dumping Farris and working exclusively with trainer Greg Anderson

I can see that. If someone who is a hard worker (which I haven't anyone say Barry isn't) and goes from working on speed (which would produce lean muscle and nessicary weight loss) to "bulk" work, of course they are going to see weight gain. How much would depend upon frame. Is 40 a little more than expected? I don't know. The fact that his trainer was indicted for pushing steriods is just always going to make it debatable.
