The Darfur region of the Sudan

This isn't your normal world politics post here. Sadly this situation is not getting nearly the attention it deserves. While there are always things like this, especially in Africa (Ethiopia and Zimbabwe also come to mind as of right now) this is probably the worst tragedy since Rwanda in 1994. hxxp://www.tacitus.org/story/2004/5/14/6955/70338 has more backround and links. Googling it will also net you a number of articles. Kristof in particular from the NYT has written a lot about it. I have refrained from posting anything before because I don't want to sound like I'm trying to preach to you or anything, because I certainly haven't done anything either. I haven't even written my Congressman/Senators yet (I'll do that the next couple days) and I'm not sure what we can/should do. While I agree with the supporting an invasion scenario, I'm not sure that could get widespread support in today's climate. I feel like sending money to some aid agency wouldn't help much beacuse it would just be trying to correct the symptoms and wouldn't address the ethnic cleansing and forced removal that is the cause of these problems, but nevertheless it would be much more helpful than just sitting around doing nothing because the problem is perceived as being too big. If any of you have suggestions or additional thoughts on what can be done, post them. Just the writing of your representatives could help focus attention on the problem and bring it into the mainstream, hopefully forcing political leaders to act. Just felt like this was something that shouldn't be ignored while there are possible measures that could help a lot of people significantly.

Im with you

I believe that the UN should get involved immediately...but until there is some mainstream media play, sadly, im afraid the UN will remain focused on the pressing issues and things like this slide through.

If we want to really do something good and protect people from ruthless dictators, this would be an ideal situation. Time to put that whole "doing the world a favor" argument to the test.
