What is the best online roleplaying game?

I haven't played one in about 1 1/2 years. What is considered the best one at this time. And please take into consieration lag time, gameplay, etc. I used to play UO even back to when it first came out. I then played Everquest, but I quickly became frustrated with the strict hack and slash world and so I had moved on to Dark Age of Camelot. Since then I have been out of the loop and looking to get into one again. Any suggestions?

My friends who play love DAOC because of the realm raids, but I have another friend who still slogs away at EQ.

Yeah, I would have to say that I had like Dark Age of Camelot the best out of all of them, but there are so many new ones. Anyone tried them out (like Horizons, Asheron's Call, etc.)

Thanks Ragone, I didn't even know that this game existed. And it is nice to see that it is coming from Blizzard Entertainment. Always enjoyed their single player roleplaying games over the years. Nice.....very nice.

I've played all of them. And I keep coming back to EQ. The sheer amount of content in that game is staggering. And the things that frustrated you before have been worked on in the past few years, it is a lot friendlier game now than it used to be. However the high level game is daunting, and requires huge amounts of time if you want to get anywhere. You almost need to be in a high performance guild to see most of the 60+ level stuff.

Personally I have 2 level 30 characters and I'm having a blast, I can solo, group, raid or do whatever I want.

bah ....... Carebears all of you!!!

Play Darkfall when it comes out, thats a mans MMORPG. You won't spend 90% of your time running around collecting cute shinny things.... you'll be raiding towns!

I still for the life of me can't figure out how people enjoy killing brainless monsters all day and don't want anything to do with PvP. Crazyness....

world of warcraft will have realm vs realm pvp

(Horde Vs Alliance rather.. but i think only in certain contested areas)

and there ya go.... try to appeal to two different kinda of gamers and it will come back to haunt you a promise. If your gonna make a EQ carebear clone then make a EQ carebear clone. If your gonna make a MMORPG with PvP then make a MMORPG with PvP. Trying to do both is impossible. The World of Warcraft without full racial PvP in every area just makes no sense. The whole world revolves around them hating eachother!!!

Oh how i miss UO before they nerfed it

I beta tested Shadowbane from day 1..... it had some much potenial. But they released it about 8 months early and screwed it all up. Darkfall is my only hope..... luckly they're Dev team is really cool and they listen to the community often.

I'm dissapointed in this approach as well. I played DAOC from launch for a couple of years and was iffy on the whole PvP thing at first, but I was so addicted to it in the end it was almost a bad thing. Anyone thats turned off by PvP without trying it really doesn't know what their missing. Its the only thing that would pull me into another MMORPG.

My major beef with MMORPGs right now is the fact that they all seem to be so level dependent, PvP especially. I know in DAOC a lvl 45 could always kill a lvl 40 and so on. The genre needs a game to come along that at least attempts to level the playing field for the elitists and the casual gamer.

They just cancelled True Fantasy Live Online today for the X-box. I was looking forward to that as my intro to MMORPG. The closest thing I've played is Phantasy Star Online, and that only has groups of 4 at a time. MMORPG's blow my mind in what they can do, and I look forward to when I find one that suits me. Maybe one of these days I'll demo EQ or something.

I prefer pvp in contested areas only.. wow will have full blown pvp servers at any place...

I just don't like having to look over my shoulder at all times

Your my kinda MMORPG player Herd

Check out Darkfall.... the Devs are huge UO fans and are making this game especially for PvP and Guild vs Guild. Now its not gonna be a all-out blood bath. I think its gonna have like a reputation system kinda like UO did, but more complex im sure. I haven't checked the forums in awhile because it gets me to fired up and i wanna play!

Its not level dependent either, its skill dependent like UO was. So it won't be a boring ass level grind like EQ and all its clones. This will also level the playing field quite a bit for casual gamers.

I checked on that a couple months ago. Been waiting to hear a somewhat solid release date. Looks incredibly promising. But Shadowbane did too, and I've learned not to get my hopes up because of it.

Ok now I will have to choose between World of Warcraft or Darkfall. Both look really promising.
