Sab's Quick Play Football Test Season: College 1900

JonInMiddleGA has shown me a site called Tabletop-Sports.com and on it was a game called Quick Play Football. It's a very basic game. Each team has a couple of variables (for the college version: Offense, Defense, Close Game Factor and Strength of Schedule). A couple of modifications and you're ready for game time. Each team gets several dice rolls (one per possesion) and the game is over.

I'm going to test this puppy out. On the above site were excel files of teams. Pro teams going all the way to 1937, and college teams all the way to 1900. I'm going to recreate the 1900 college football season. If it ends up not being accurate, I don't really care. This is more of a "let's see how fun it is" test rather than a "let's see how accurate it is" test.

A quick look through the 1900 schedule will tell that accuracy is impossible. Lots of shutouts, lots of low scores, lots of "funky" scores because of very different rules and points awarded at the time. Oh well...here we go.

First game as a test: Holy Cross College vs. Massechusetts

Actual result: Holy Cross won 6-0

First Quarter

Massechusetts get off to a quick jump scoring a TD on their first drive and converting on the PAT. The rest of the 1st quarter saw a missed FG by both teams. At the end of the 1st quarter, it's 7-0 Massechusetts.

Massechusetts gets another score after another missed FG by Holy Cross with a successful FG to make the score 10-0. THat's how it would stand to half time.

Half Time Score: 10-0 Massechusetts

Midway through the 3rd quarter, Mass. turns the ball over but Holy Cross couldn't get anything out of it. However, they did score on a FG late in the quarter to finally get on board and cut the score to 10-3.

Holy Cross misses another FG and at the 2-minute warning, the game stands at 10-3. Holy Cross on their last leg pulls out a miricle and scores a touchdown to tie the game at 10 after the successful PAT.

Final Score: 10-10 Tie

My first test game took awhile, but I had to keep refering to the rules and charts. Not bad, not bad. I'm going to do the rest of the week, but not provide paragraphical results, just listings of scores. Ex:

1st - Mass TD
2nd - Mass FG
3rd - HC FG
4th - HC TD

Something like that. We'll see how this goes.

I remember reading that breifly awhile ago. Where did you get the schedule? The one I have doesn't list the college vs. high school games, I guess, since those 2 Chicago games at the beginning aren't on it.

I decided to just go from the advanced version to the basic (basic does it by quarter rather than by poss.). I figure I'm going for simplicity, might as well go even more simple, right?

Here are a couple of links that will cover just about everything you ever wanted to know about CFB history. I use the first one as my primary schedule source since I can convert it into a CSV file for my computer version of the game. The other one is great because you can find bits of information better organized by team and see how series between teams have historically played out. It should be noted that whoever designed the second site is a huge Longhorns fan from the looks of it.

I'm glad you found something you liked over there, the hardest part sometimes is trying to decide which one to try first

Interesting to see what you chose too. I'm not sure whether you realized it or not, but this is one of the more popular quickplay games & one of the more popular campaigns to try with it.

Problem seems to be that hardly anybody ever manages to complete the campaign (more teams, more schedules to deal with, more games to roll, it all adds up).

Enjoy ... by the time you think you're kinda caught up, it's a safe bet that there'll be several new games out there to try, and the whole process begins again.

I didn't know this was one of the more popular ones. I chose it to do a test dynasty because it's so simple. The more complicated ones (NASCAR Grandstand, Center Ice Hockey, Pairadice Hockey, etc.) are the ones I really want to get into. I thought I'd start simple though.

I probably will stop this dynasty after just this season. I do have a few ideas, since there are several "Quick Play" games out there, like doing a dynasty that covers all sports that there is a "Quick Play" game for. For college recreation itself, I'll leave that to Wolfpack. Don't want to steal his thunder.

And QS...I almost did a double take when I saw that game on the schedule. I wonder is there's a story behidn that Physicians & Surgeons games.

Heh. I've wondered that myself. They did pretty good in my 1900 campaign (see link above). They took out Northwestern, Wisconsin, and Illinois. (I think they got ND at the end of the year as well, but I don't have that in front of me to know for sure)
