Some Good News Heading Into the Weekend...

NEW YORK -- The spiritually inclined band Creed, whose anthemic hits "Higher" and "With Arms Wide Open" helped them become one of the top-selling rock acts of the past decade, has called it quits.

Three former Creed members immediately announced they were forming a new band - minus singer Scott Stapp - but were quick to say it was not "just Creed with a different singer."

Creed's three albums sold a combined 24 million copies in the United States. While many critics dismissed them as pale Pearl Jam imitators, Creed members used that as creative fuel and laughed all the way to the bank.

Lyricist Stapp grew up with a strict religious upbringing and often explored those topics in song. At one point five of the first eight queries on the "frequently asked questions" section of the Florida-based band's Web site dealt with Christianity, including "Is Creed a Christian band?"

The band always said no.

Stapp and guitarist Mark Tremonti were longtime friends and songwriting partners whose relationship soured in the past couple of years, as Tremonti explained in a recent interview with MTV.com.

That caused tension in the band. "There was a lot more drama," drummer Scott Phillips told The Associated Press on Friday. "It wasn't necessarily created by anyone in particular. It just stopped being fun."

Stapp was not available for comment, said a spokesman for Wind-up Records.

Creed took most of last year off, and reconvened in the winter to come up with new material. "The vibe just wasn't the same," Phillips said.

Still, they weren't about to casually disband such a successful unit. The band had initially figured on taking a hiatus, but a side project was working out so well they decided not to turn back, Phillips said.

The new band, Alter Bridge, features Tremonti, Phillips and former Creed bassist Brian Marshall. Singer-songwriter Myles Kennedy, formerly of the band Mayfield Four, was recruited as the fourth member. Their first album is due out in August.

Phillips described the music as edgier than Creed, with the musicians given more space to show off their chops.

"We don't want to make it seem like it's just Creed with a different singer," he said.

Stapp's first solo recording will be on a soundtrack of music inspired by the film "The Passion of the Christ." He's working on a solo album with the Canadian band the Tea Party.




I don't understand why The Tea Party would want to work with him. I assume they'd be his backing band or something for his record. I hope that's all...

Just as I don't expect every comedy to be Caddyshack or expect every steak to be a filet mignon, I don't expect all of my music to be to the level of U2.

Of course, I don't believe in bashing ANYBODY'S musical taste. I hate Pearl Jam. I like Creed. I like Soundgarden. I hate Bob Dylan. I like The Eagles. I think The White Stripes sound like wailing cats. Doesn't mean I'm right or wrong on any of it.

My Own Prison is a great song IMO. Really, I liked the entire first album. The second one wasn't quite as good, but had it's moments.

The positive side is that I really like Tea Party. Good group. I also think the other band members can form a decent band if the lead singer is right.

Let the flamers have their fun. It's very fashionable to rip on Creed. Hell, maybe some of it's deserved. (Scott certainly isn't the brightest bulb in the world) Yet I'll continue to listen to their music and I'll follow the two new albums in the works. (both Scott's and the other members) To each their own.

I really like Creed's first album. There was actually some fairly heavy guitar usage in it. Since the first one, though, it's been all about Scott Stapp. And that ain't a good thing...

Uhh... how could you NOT see Creed as a poor attempt to imitate Pearl Jam? Stapp is such an Eddie Vedder wannabe it's painful to watch.

My wife likes them. I'm pretty much indifferent to them, although I have to admit that I continue to be surprised at how many people hate them (which is the reason for the title of this thread). That said, if there's anything about Creed that put me off, it was the attitude of Stapp, who seems to think (or at least has been protrayed as) he's God's gift to rock 'n roll.

For that, I'd really rather Tea Party not be associated with him, although musically, they'd probably be a good fit for his vocal style. Plus, I bet more Americans saw the name Tea Party from all of these stories in the past couple of hours than knew of them for the past decade combined. So for that reason, maybe it's not such a bad thing. It'd be nice if they could at least get a US deal so I don't have to buy their CDs through Canadian websites.

I'll never understand the hatred people have of the band. There are bands that put out music which causes me to nearly swerve off the road in pure agony. Some of these bands sell millions of copies. I simply change the station. It isn't a really hard thing to do. Creed became the poster "rock" group for people to bash.

The great thing here is the celebration I've been seeing. Yippeee, they broke up. Ummm, they haven't put out an album in forever and the rumors of their breakup have been going on for well over a year. They aren't going to be played on the radio any less and now they'll have two groups that will get radio airplay. If you really hate Creed and were looking for some celebration, I'm not exactly sure this is your shining moment.

I simply change the station.

With Creed, sometimes it's not that simple. No joke, one time I heard a Creed song come on a station, I changed the station to one playing the same Creed song, just to change it to a station that was playing a frickin Creed song!! They're one of those bands that most stations will play constantly because they're just "rock" for the rock stations, but just "adult contemprary" enough for the lighter stations.

Not the band's fault, of course. But when bands get severely overplayed (especially the amount that "With Arsm Wide Open" got played), it's going to generate hatred even from people who would normally not care about them. Now when I hear "With Arms Wide Open" I go into a mental rage where the only thing on my list of things to do is to make sure I stop hearing that song.

I went to the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA and still live in Williamsburg... the schools is relatively small, about 4,000 undergrads... a year ago he did a small outside concert at the run down out-door pavilion with about 1,500 people.. it was by far THE best concert I have ever been to.. the weather was great.. the atmosphere was great (the stage runs right up to a lake)... and he was awesome... really knows how to play the crowd, especially with the size of the crowd...

I've got a bunch of bootlegs of his shows from 2001 to 2003, just him and a piano. My wife and I saw him in LA in March of 2002 and Gainesville, FL in October that same year. Great, great show.

I liked a few of Creed's songs, but they were played way too much. Kind of like how I liked some of Nickelback's songs, but now they play them like hell and I can't tell the difference between them anymore.

I don't much care for the singing and lyrics of The White Stripes, although I do like some of the lyrics... I really like the guitar in the songs. That's what brought me into The White Stripes, and that's what'll keep me with them.

they didn't sound like Pearl Jam. i (fortunately) never listened to the music on their albums, just the crap they played on the radio, and Pearl Jam never played power rock ballads. Creed's music was meant to be played in big rock arena's. it loses it's strength in small packed clubs.

Pearl Jam - as evidenced by their "MTV Unplugged" show proved they could grab some guitars and a tamborine and play in someone's basement and still kick ass.

Pearl Jam music has energy running through it (at least the early stuff). Creed just seemed too Hollywood for me. mind you i've never heard their albums, so i'm just basing this off of whatever got airplay. and i've seen early footage of stapp. he's the classic case of the geek in the school choir who woke up one day and found out his acne was gone, he hair had grown and he grew another foot. i know his secret, he never fooled me.

Don't forget, though...Stapp had the spirit of Jim Morrison running through him (which is probably why working with The Tea Party is attractive to him). Right down to his stay in Tallahassee before hitting the big time.

Alas...until George Clinton gets arrested again, Tallahassee with have to go back to being nowhere on the music map...

I didn't mind Creed (their last album, sounded good, from an engineering stand point.) I tend to use their album Weathered for a reference disc.

They wrote catchy songs, had some good riffs.

I did not like Stapp.
