Welcome to year 12 of my Duke Blue Devils TCY Dynasty. Feedback is always welcome.
Check out Year 11 as we missed the playoffs thanks to a floundering QB. Primary Offense: Pro Form Primary Defense: 4-3 Current Prestige: 80 Career Record: 74-56 Year 11 (7-4) Email Time Harvey Cannon has retired from his position of defensive coordinator. (He must not like the fact that we're going back to the 4-3 this year.) We also had our first inductees into the college football hall of fame. I'm not sure how I want to present this yet or even if I want to mention any non-Duke players at all. Stay tuned. Starting Lineups
Offense Code:
DiPietro - Added 1372 rushing yards on to his total. Has a little over 3000 in just two years. Zatechka - 3rd year as a starter. Caught 24 more passes last year for 2 TD's. Rice - Was ACC offensive freshman of the year last season. Caught 20 passes for 261 yards. Taylor - Only had 16 catches last year as a starter...but was dealing with injuries for most of the season. McKnight - Didn't start last season but still ended up with 29 catches and led the team in TD receptions. Wooden - One of three first year starters. Not spectacular...but very solid. Zahursky - Started as a red-shirt freshman last year. Very good guard. Bowers - Our biggest lineman at 6-5...330lbs. First year starter. Frazier - Another first year starter but our best lineman of a very solid group. McIntyre - The other returning starter. Only two seniors total on the whole line. Defense Code:
Moss- Couldn't red-shirt because of injuries. Still has long way to develop but very good future ahead. Walker - Had 20 tackles and 2.5 sacks as a starter last year. Catalano - Didn't start last year because of the 3-4 scheme. Good run stopper. Johnstone - Is is crazy that I'm benching an all-ACC 1st teamer for this guy? Led team in TFL's with 14. Richmond - Lost him to injury towards the end of last season. Only had 21 tackles. Jones - Had almost the exact same numbers as Richmond. Bernier - Most talented player in secondary. Four year starter. Ellison - Had just two picks last year but a great man to man cover guy. Nixon - Intercepted 7 passes from FS spot last year. School single season record. Moves over to SS this year. Austin - Like Nixon...a ball hawk with great hands. Special Teams Code:

Week 2
Northwestern (0-0) at #41 Duke (0-0) (-10) No TV Last season: Duke 48 Northwestern 0 Career Record against opponent: 9-2 Key Injuries - None Preview - This was the last game we played last year while we considered ourselves "dominant." Then after this game the wheels came off and we ended our season 4-4. This year we hope to start things off on the right foot again...but this time we want to keep the wheels on and go back to the team we knew two years ago. Looking down the roster...I think we have a pretty good team overall this year. The only question we have is at QB...probably the last position that you want question marks at...but this year we're handing over the reigns to RS Frosh Jonathan Buchanan. Buchanan is of course a bit raw but has the best potential at QB that we've ever had. Hopefully our offensive coordinator calls a lot of running plays so we can let Rodney DiPietro do his thing behind our great o-line and thus take the pressure off Buchanan. Northwestern has lost the last 7 games in this series...and this year they're not looking too promising. It will definitely be interesting to see how we perform this season. Code:
Post-Game - Definitely a good start to the year with this win. Buchanan played pretty well. I think our goal for him is to just not turn the ball over. Last year...not only did Johansen throw a lot of Ints but he threw a lot of Ints that were taken back for TD's. At least 5 that I can remember. So anyway...mission accomplished in game one. 3 TD passes and no Ints to go along with 270 yards passing in just a little over 2 quarters of play. DiPietro wasn't dominating as far as yards per carry goes...but he had more of a workman-like game with 112 yards on 30 carries and 2 TD's. The defense was definitely on it's game today as well. They held the Cats to 105 total yards...sacked the QB's 5 times and picked off 2 passes. The only disappointment that we experienced was CB Vincent Bernier suffering a Hip Pointer that has made him doubtful for next week's game. Next up - Duke at Nebraska

Week 3
#20 Duke (1-0) (-3) at #31 Nebraska (1-0) TV3 Last season: First Meeting Career Record against opponent: 0-0 Key Injuries CB Vincent Bernier - Hip Pointer - Doubtful 9 weeks Preview - I'm kinda pumped to play this game because Nebraska is actually my favorite college football team...and to add a little bit to the game...we're playing in Lincoln. The Huskers aren't exactly the powerhouse they once were...they've actually slipped a little bit...which you could relate to the modern day Husker team but we won't get into that. The TCY version of the Huskers is somewhat true to the now old school Huskers as they run the Power-I formation. So far this year they're 1-0 with a win over a crappy Arizona squad 38-0. RB Floyd Santiago was the offensive star rushing for 151 yards and 3 TD's. We also shutout our first opponent in our first game 44-0 and QB Jonathan Buchanan passed his first test and now has an even bigger test against the legendary Cornhuskers in Lincoln. Code:
Post-Game - It was a pretty good feeling to walk into Memorial Stadium and take a few names and collect our first road victory of the year. Buchanan threw 4 more TD passes w/o throwing an Int. That's a new concept in these here parts. And what's up with Oscar Taylor this year? He's averaging 25 yards a catch this season with 3 TD's already. Lonnie McKnight also had a great game receiving 6-87 for 2 TD's. Defensively we did another great job. Granted Nebraska is a running team...but it's always a good feeling to hold a team to 4-23 and 86 yards passing. Plus...we picked off three more passes. Next up - Indiana at Duke

Week 4
Indiana (1-1) at #21 Duke (2-0) (-9) TV4 Last season: Duke 31 Indiana 6 Career Record against opponent: 1-0 Key Injuries CB Vincent Bernier - Hip Pointer - Doubtful 8 weeks Preview - We really didn't have too many problems with Indiana last year beating them 31-6. This year the Hoosiers aren't looking like they've improved too much. So far they're 1-1 with a 3pt loss to Brigham Young and a 3pt win over NC State. That result doesn't bode well for NC State this season. So for the 2nd straight week we'll have to match-up against a running team. Last week we didn't have too much problem with the Husker running game so we don't think we'll have too much problem with the Hoosier running game either. CB Vincent Bernier again is our only injury casualty so far this year as he'll be out for this game again. And we can't say enough about the job that Buchanan is doing so far. 7 TD's and no Ints so far...we couldn't ask for much more. Code:
Post-Game - Well that wasn't the prettiest game offensively that we've ever had in a win...but we didn't really need one to win this game. We got a blocked punt returned for a TD by Earl Johnstone and a 29 yd punt return taken back for a TD by Oscar Taylor who continues his great play this year. Rodney DiPietro had his best game of the year rushing for 187 yards and 2 TD's. He started the game off with a 66 yd run for a TD and then added a 13 yd TD run in the 2nd. We only got 41 yards passing from Buchanan but we didn't need much from him today at all. Our 187 yards from DiPietro and solid defense was all we needed today. Next up - Duke at Florida State

Week 5
#18 Duke (3-0) (-13) at #49 Florida State (1-2) TV5 Last season: Florida St 34 Duke 13 Career Record against opponent: 5-6 Key Injuries CB Vincent Bernier - Hip Pointer - Doubtful 8 weeks Preview - Well after 5 straight wins over the Noles they finally got us back pretty good with a 34-13 win last year on their way to the ACC championship. Even though they won by 21 points we really were in this game but we couldn't overcome the fact that Johansen threw 4 Ints. This year FSU is off to another slow start as they've lost 2 of their first 3 games...with their only win coming against a bad Baylor team. For our sake...Brian Stolowitz has graduated and this year's starter Tommie Tyler doesn't quite have the experience yet. So far this year he has just 4 TD passes and 7 Ints. Defense has been FSU's calling card for years and this year they're ain't lookin so good. Right now after three games we have the #1 scoring defense in the nation...holding our opponents to just 3 points per game. Code:
Post-Game - Well when things are right between these two teams you get a nice low scoring defensive battle and that's what we had today. The game came down to the last 5 mins of the 4th quarter. After FSU scored a TD with 5:38 left in the game on a TD pass from Tyler to Melvin Wylie to make it 17-14...our drive stalled and we had to punt the ball back to the Noles. Then they put together a drive that got them down to the our 2 yard line and as Bennie Zuck took the hand off to the left side he was tackled and then fumbled the ball and Tim Sedor fell on the pill to preserve the win. The game started out on a bad note for us as Bennie Zuck ran one in from 35 yards out to take an early 7-0 lead. Then we got control of the game and scored 17 straight points. Our first TD came near the end of the 2nd quarter as DiPietro caught an 11 yard TD pass from Buchanan to go into halftime at 7-7. The only score in the 3rd was a 39 yard FG by Scott Ulmer to give us our first lead at 10-7. Then halfway through the 4th...DiPietro broke off a 59 yard TD run to give us the lead at 17-7. That's when FSU got back within 3 on the Wylie TD catch...but we were able to hold on and even the series back to 6 games a piece. Next up - North Carolina at Duke Recruiting Commitments Code:

North Carolina (1-3) at #16 Duke (4-0) (-10) TV4 Last season: Duke 38 UNC 14 Career Record against opponent: 6-5 Key Injuries DE Vernon Moss - Pulled Quadriceps Muscle - Out 7 weeks LB Earl Johnstone - Arthroscopic Knee Surgery - Out 6 weeks CB Vincent Bernier - Hip Pointer - Questionable 6 weeks TE Tyrell Rice - Sprained Knee - Questionable 2 weeks WR Oscar Taylor - Deep Thigh Bruise - Probable 1 week Preview - Even though we won last week we kinda got beat up in the process. Earl Johnstone went down for 6 weeks with knee surgery but luckily we have Tim Sedor in the back-up so we won't lose much there. But we also lost Moss at DE with a pullled quadricep muscle. We should see him back in the latter half of the season. And Bernier is listed as questionable for the first time...not sure if he'll go or not. Our opponent this week is of course our rival UNC and once again they're off to a bit of a rough start. To their credit they had a real tough non-conference schedule where they plaed at UCLA...at Texas and at LSU. But they did come back last week against NC State and pick up their first win 45-14. So we really can't gauge how good or bad they are right now. We're just happy to be back home after last week's tough game down in Tallassee. Code:
Post-Game - Well it's about that time of year again when Rodney DiPietro gets revved up and that could be the key for us going down the stretch. We fed him the ball 23 times and he gained 173 yards plus 1 TD. His strong game allowed Jon Buchanan to only have to put the ball in the air 19 times for 182 yards and 3 TD's. On the defensive side of things...Lenny Anderson had his best game of the year by collecting a season high 3.5 sacks. He also led the way with 7 tackles. Once again this year they find themselves with a losing record and no relief in sight. Last year you wouldn't have known that the Wolfpack were 1-7 when we played them because they took us apart 31-10. Wally Johansen had probably his worst game of the season throwing 5 Ints as we just handed that game to them on a silver platter. Going into this game...we are coming off a win over UNC 34-3. NC State has already lost to the Heels this year 45-14...ouch. Their main offense is the T-Formation and right now they are 83rd in the nation in rushing yards. Not gonna get it done. We're having one of our strongest defensive efforts this year as we are currently 4th against the run...6th against the pass and 2nd in points per game. The bye week helped us with some of our injuries...but we're still gonna be w/o 3 starters this week. Code:
Post-Game - Well...apparently we were a little pissed off that we lost to NC State last year. We had the 2nd most yards gained in a single game in school history with 548. Rodney DiPietro had 160 yards rushing and 4 TD's and Jon Buchanan had 305 yards passing and 4 more TD's. Oscar Taylor had a great day as he caught 6 of those passes for 129 yards and 2 TD's. Defensively we weren't the greatest...but we didn't have to be on our game as the offense pretty much took care of business against the Pack. Next up - Clemson at Duke

Week 9

We've won 8 games in a row going back to the end of last season. Clemson had a pretty decent season last year going 6-5. Their first good season in quite a while. But this year they're back to their losing ways as they come into this game at 1-4. Like NC State...they run out of the T-Formation and also like the Wolfpack their running offense isn't doing so hot as they are 100th in the nation. Last season we had our way with Clemson and they were a winning team...I really don't have a lot of hope for them in this contest. Code:
Post-Game - Well all of a sudden we're an offensive juggernaut. We had our 2nd straight game with over 500 yards of total offense. Umm...we'll take it. This game was over at the half as we were up 35-0 and we had taken out Buchanan and inserted Curtis to mop up in the 2nd half. Kenny Curtis has got to be the best mop up QB in the land. In a game last year he went 14 for 15 for 191 yards and today he was 10-13 for 113 yards. Looking back at his four years with us. He's appeared in 10 games and he's connected on 42 of 49 passes. That's a 85.7% completion percentage!! Ha! Now this is all in mop up duty so don't get too pumped. We like what we gotten from Buchanan so far this season. Anyway...DiPietro gets MVP honors again in this one with 135 yards rushing and 82 yards receiving and 4 total TD's. Anderson picked up 2 more sacks to bring his season total up to 10.5. He's only 3 sacks behind the leader. Next up - Virginia at Duke Recruiting Commitments Code:

#32 Virginia (5-2) at #12 Duke (7-0) (-8) TV2 Last season: Viginia 12 Duke 7 Career Record against opponent: 4-7 Key Injuries T Carlos Frazier - Broken Wrist - Out 10 weeks WR Lonnie McKnight - Separated Shoulder - Out 5 weeks DE Vernon Moss - Pulled Quadriceps Muscle - Questionable 3 weeks LB Wayne Jones - Strained Triceps Muscle - Questionable 3 weeks LB Earl Johnstone - Arthroscopic Knee Surgery - Questionable 2 weeks Preview - Well this game starts the hardest part of our schedule as we have a brutal 3 game stretch against Virginia...Wake and Tech. With us in the mix those are the top 4 teams in the ACC right now. Virginia beat us in an ugly 12-7 game last year. Our defense played out of their mind but Johansen just couldn't get this offense going and we ended up losing a tough one. This season the Cavs have lost two games to Rice and FSU. The Noles kinda blew them out 31-7 so we hope that's a good omen for us. RB Craig Jennings is having the best season for the Cavs offensively. He's rushed for 677 yards so far along with 10 TD's. We lost WR Lonnie McKnight in the NC State game with a separated shoulder so he'll be on the shelf for a few weeks. Moss...Jones and Johnstone could all be back in the starting lineup for this important game as we look for our 10th straight win. And we're getting TV2 respect. Code:
Post-Game - Wow! Good news first. We scrapped our way through that game...plain and simple. Buchanan was erratic throwing 4 Ints...but somehow we pulled it together and won it. That's the good part. The bad part is that we lost the school's all-time leading rusher and all-purpose yardage gainer...Rodney DiPietro. DiPietro went down with a concussion in the 2nd OT and after the game it was determined that he has repetitive concussion syndrome. So right now he's on the shelf for 69 weeks and will most likely leave school after this season is over with. Sad...very sad. But this game was filled with ups and downs. We were at one point down 20-10 in the 3rd quarter...we then scored 14 unanswered points to take a 24-20 lead. Then the game's MVP Bo Stephens hit Fernando Browning for a 62 yard TD pass...one of his 6 in the game...to give them a 27-24 lead. But somehow we put together a last minute drive to get in FG range and Scott Ulmer made a 33 yard FG with :15 left in regulation. Then both teams went back and forth for 3 OT's scoring TD's on every possession. Then finally in the 4th OT...we were able to hold Virginia to 4th down and then they missed a FG. Finally on the first play in our possession Buchanan found Taylor in the end zone for a 25 yard TD pass. His 5th of the day. With DiPietro's injury Louis Salter takes over at RB and more pressure falls to Buchanan. Next up - Duke at Wake Forest Recruiting Commitments Code:

#10 Duke (8-0) (-4) at #30 Wake Forest (7-1) TV2 Last season: Wake Forest 34 Duke 27 Career Record against opponent: 6-5 Key Injuries RB Rodney DiPietro - Repetitive Concussion Syndrome - Out season LB Howie Glover - Broken Wrist - Out 8 weeks WR Lonnie McKnight - Separated Shoulder - Out 5 weeks T Carlos Frazier - Broken Wrist - Doubtful 9 weeks DE Vernon Moss - Pulled Quadriceps Muscle - Questionable 2 weeks LB Wayne Jones - Strained Triceps Muscle - Probable 2 weeks WR Oscar Taylor - Broken Finger - Probable 2 weeks LB Earl Johnstone - Arthroscopic Knee Surgery - Probable 1 weeks Preview - Well look who's back in the mix. After having 7 of your last 8 seasons be losing ones...all of a sudden Wake Forest has caught fire and they're 7-1 and 5-0 in the conference. They haven't done it with blowout wins...only 2 of their 7 wins have been by margins larger than 10 points. So how have they turned it around this year? Defense. Their stats aren't gonna blow you away...but no longer are they struggling to get out of the 100's. This season their rushing defense is ranked 47th...meanwhile their passing defense is ranked 40th. To further prove that they haven't been putting up big numbers...their starting QB Teddy Barajas has only 11 TD passes this year...and his back up Donald Smith has added 4. It looks like Barajas has been battling an injured groin so they've had to rely on Smith in some games. But they've been making it work. For us...we have to make a huge adjustment now that DiPietro will no longer be in our backfield...most likely ever again. So now Louis Salter will have to step in that role. So far this year he has averaged a modest 3.28 yards per carry...so right now hope is not high. But we're still undefeated and looking to get back in the playoffs despite our setback. Code:
Post-Game - Well. This is an outcome I never expected to see. Not only did we win a big game on the road but we dominated. I don't think we really new what to do in the first quarter as we basically had about 50 yards of total offense and Salter was gaining 2-4 yards per carry...but nothing that could keep a drive going. Same goes for the 2nd quarter as we kept on plugging away...meanwhile our defense was basically shutting down the entire Deacon offense. Then I don't know what happened in the 2nd half...but we exploded. Louis Salter decided to put on a show rushing for 170 yards in his first career start along with 2 TD's. Buchanan who couldn't get anything going in the 1st half either ended up with 269 yards passing and 1 TD. Our defense though probably put on their best performance of the year in probably the most important game for us. Now we can go back home for the final big game of this trifecta. But we still have a big task ahead of us since Tech has been one of our most pesky opponents in the ACC. Last week the team seemed to gell in the 2nd half and maybe we can go on one of those runs that we put together in 2012. We're getting a little healthier as the weeks go by now. Moss ...Jones and Taylor are all one week away from becoming completely healthy barring any setbacks. Looking over the Tech roster there's one guy that's scaring us a bit. WR Louie Gibson has seemed to find a connection with Georgia Tech QB's. He's caught 59 passes already this year which is 39 more than the next guy. He's also racked up 1004 receiving yards and 8 TD's. Other than that their offense doesn't pose too many problems. If we play like we did last week we should come away with the win. Code:

Carlos Frazier is now questionable but we'll no doubt keep him out of this game and he should be ready to go in the playoffs. Same with McKnight and Glover. Post-Game - So why don't we just finish up the year with a school record 367 rushing yards...breaking the old record by 107 yards. Then we'll finish with the 3rd highest total yards in a single game with 547. Then the D held the Terps to the 2nd fewest total yards in single game with 73. Salter finishes the regular season with 233 yards on the ground and takes home MVP honors. Now the negatives...we lose Scott Ulmer for the rest of the season...but right now we don't care. It's a nice feeling no doubt. Our first opponent is going to be a team that we've never faced before in Central Florida. Just like Wake Forest...the Golden Knights like to put it in the air. So much so that they are the #1 rated passing offense in the nation. They're #1 in completions (315)...attempts (505) and yards (4194). And the QB that's responsible for all this damage is Brent Walker. Brent has thrown for 3633 of the 4194 yards and he's thrown 37 TD's...but the one number that sticks out is that he's also thrown 20 Ints. Three WR's have caught at least 10 TD's passes inluding their leading receiver Corwin Cabbage...yes Cabbage. Fortunately for us however...he acquired some ACL damage to his knee and won't be playing for the rest of the year. Defensively they're led by DE Joe Anderson who has an amazing 19 sacks on the year to go with his 26 TFL's. Teamwise they are very good against the run but below average vs the pass. We're definitely on a roll right now and it couldn't have come at a better time in the season. The only blow we had last week was losing our kicker Scott Ulmer. If any games come down to a kicking match...we won't win. Code:
Post-Game - Our offensive roll continues as we racked up 503 total yards of offense and blew out the Knights 47-15. The game started out with the defense all over QB Brent Walker. Game MVP Lenny Anderson had 3 sacks not even halfway through the first quarter and ended up with 3.5. The defense as a whole ended up with 5 sacks and intercepted Walker 3 times. Then on offense it was business as usual...Salter had 190 yards on the ground along with 2 TD's and Oscar Taylor and Lonnie McKnight had 71 and 78 yards receiving respectively. We even had a blocked punt today as Vincent Bernier blocked a punt in the first quarter and our scoring actually started after the blocked punt. And we have to give it up to replacement kicker Preston Broughton. He was 4 of 5 in the FG dept and didn't miss an XP all day. Next up - San Diego State vs Duke

Last week we took on the top rated pass offense in the nation...this week we take on the 4th ranked team in San Diego State. The difference in the two teams is the experience of the QB. UCF had a somewhat inexperienced QB leading their offense...but this week it's a totally different story. The Aztec's QB is Sr Fred Guenther and Guenther is the NCAA's all-time leader in TD passes thrown with 138 and 2nd all-time in passing yards with 12,896. Some very lofty numbers indeed. His main target this year is another Sr Antoine Nece. Nece this season has 62 catches for 1120 yards and 17 TD's. He along with the other starting WR Johnny Cooley have combined for 27 TD catches between the two of them. We escaped any additonal injuries last week and like our chances against another pro-passing team. We've had really good results against passing teams this year. The combined score in games against Wake...Tech and UCF was 131-22. Again the big difference here is that Guenther is a true stud and it's gonna be hard to bottle him up. Let's see if DE Lenny Anderson...who know has 19 sacks on the year...can havesome affect on him. For us...Louis Salter now has 999 rushing yards in just 4 starts this year and 8 TD runs. If we can continue to run the ball like we have...we feel good about this one as well. Code:
Post-Game - This one hurt...I'll admit it. It's never fun to be up 17-0 and then have a really good defense give up 14 points in the 4th quarter to lose in the quarterfinals to a very game Aztec squad. We again dominated through the 2 1/2 quarters. Then SDSU gained a little momentum after we scored to make it 17-0 and then Mercury Blundin took the kickoff back 86 yards for a TD. Then that led to two more TD's by the Aztecs in the 4th with the last coming with 1:13 left in the game as Rex Oliver ran it in from 4 yards out. I think the credit has to go to the Aztec run defense as they held Salter to 69 yards on 25 carries and no TD's. I think that definitely was the difference in the game. Well another loss in the quarters...the squad if definitely young...so I think we'll be back for more next season. Next up - The offseason.

He's the all-time NCAA leader in passing yards and passing TD's...plus he guided his team past us in the playoffs. Passing: 255-439 for 4132 yards...41 TD's and 20 Ints Career Passing Numbers: 894-1531 for 13,525 yards...141 TD's and 51 Ints
