The list if events below is in alphabetical order. The events occurred at least 5 years apart. Can you place them in chronological order?
Boston opens first U.S. subway Charles Darwin publishes Origin of the Species Clara Barton becomes President of the American Red Cross Ellis Island starts processing immigrants Erie Canal opens Herman Melville publishes Moby Dick John Styth Pemberton introduces Coca-Cola Missouri Compromise Nullification Crisis Sioux and other tribes defeat General Custer at Little Bighorn U.S.-Mexican War begins Victoria becomes Queen of Great Britain William Seward signs treaty to buy Alaska from Russia

On a side trivia note, rumor has it that Clara Barton and Susan B. Anthony were both hot. Ms. Anthony's ugly dollar aside.

In that case, I'm somewhat up against it. The ones I'm not sure about I don't have a good clue what the date might be so I can't be sure which ones to shuffle, since I get the feeling moving one might trigger either the list going askew or straightening itself out more and I don't really want to get into a hot/cold kind of guessing game where I'm just picking one to shuffle to see how you'd react.
I've dropped the list from this post and disqualified myself by looking things up and finding out I had shuffled the wrong items. Oh, well. It was a good try. Last edited by Wolfpack : 06-16-2004 at 02:39 PM. Reason: Made wrong choices in list movement |

Victoria was 1837, don't have a clue about the others. Obscure US history is not my cup of tea.

Dola...learned from this game that I know my 1800s to 1860s much better than my 1870s to 1890s (aside from Little Big Horn). Makes sense. I was always more interested in the antebellum period and the Civil War than in Reconstruction or the settling of the West.

Your hint made it a little easy. I probably screwed Seward's folly up, based off what I saw from Wolfpack's answers. Missouri Compromise Erie Canal opens Nullification Crisis Victoria becomes Queen of Great Britain U.S.-Mexican War begins Herman Melville publishes Moby Dick Charles Darwin publishes Origin of the Species William Seward signs treaty to buy Alaska from Russia Sioux and other tribes defeat General Custer at Little Bighorn Clara Barton becomes President of the American Red Cross John Styth Pemberton introduces Coca-Cola Ellis Island starts processing immigrants Boston opens first U.S. subway

We have a winnah!
I don't know what's worse playing this game. To know nothing of the dates, or to know a few dates and then have to shoehorn the rest of the items around the ones you know. Or worse yet, being convinced of the wrong date and having that hose you. I could have sworn the Nullification Crisis happened in 1829, but maybe I'm mixing that up with some other damn fool thing South Carolina did that year. Botching that one cost me on the Erie Canal, which I thought was in the 1820s, but didn't fit between the Missouri Compromise in 1820 and what I thought was the Nullification Crisis of 1829. The other dates I thought I knew I turned out to be correct on. Everything else was just a murky idea that sounded plausible. |
