Freddy Garcia is a White Sox

Didn't see much of the details, but it was breaking news on SC's bottom line.

I saw the ChiSox got rid of Miguel Olivo. It was a 3 for 3 deal, I will look for more info as it comes.

Seems like a decent deal. Seeing Olivo a few times, he has the tools to be a good catcher. Don't know much about the prospects. Davis was always highly touted with the Padres but hes a flop. Any info on the prospects would help and I'd be greatful.

Seattle is getting Olivo, AAA OF Jeremy Reed, and AA SS Mike Morse.

Here is the info I could find on Reed:

Jeremy Reed, OF
Rank in Top 50: 16
It's obvious that Reed, a product of Long Beach St. University, is on the fast track. He led the minors with a .373 average and .453 OBP between high-Class A and Double-A, hitting .409 after a promotion to Birmingham. The organization's second-round draft pick in 2002, Reed won't measure near the top of the charts in any one tool. He's average across the board, but because of tremendous baseball instincts, all those tools become above-average. The White Sox hope that continues to define the kind of player he can be, a Jim Edmonds-type who makes the most of his ability. He'll start the year with Triple-A Charlotte, but could be the first guy to get called up if there's a hole to fill in Chicago's outfield.

So much for the Dodgers making a move. Apparently Depodesta isn't thrilled with much on the field...

Wow. Sounds like Reed has the tools to be a good fixture in Seattles outfield.

You know there are other pitchers in baseball besides Garcia, right? And some of them are probably even available.

As a fan of the Angels chief, wouldn't you like him and his W/L record right now over Colon?

Yes, but I would have taken him over Colon before this season.

And considering my team has pasted your squad the past couple days prior to today, you're the last one should be taking shots at Colon.

I doubt it GD, I imagine him & Andrew are both Chicago-bound just after the All-Star break, about the time they make sure that Ordonez isn't still hurtin'.

Now Now Chief, if only Fox was willing to sell the Dodgers for the same price the Angels were going for...we'd be able to get some big name FA's. Ever since the O'Malley's left, we've gone down hill. It nearly makes the Giants look good no less

What are you talking about? The Dodgers are worth a lot more than the Angels. The Angels were sold for less than $200 M. Fox held out for some $400 M at first, and although I don't recall exactly how much the new owners are paying for their shares, I'm guessing it's more than $180 M.

You guys didn't get big name free agents because of the iffy ownership situation this past offseason, and you guys let the farm system go to crap, so you couldn't recover from a lack of ability to spend money (on which you essentially based most of the premier talent on the team for the past ten years).

Trust me, the Dodgers' problems against the Angels and Giants aren't money-related. Both of those teams are under far more financial stress than the Dodgers.

That said, I hope you catch the Giants.

YOu ok there Chief? I'm aware the Dodgers went for a lot more than the Angels. I think the Angels were lucky that Moreno wanted to buy them and Disney wanted out ASAP. Fox wanted out, but not as badly as Disney wanted so they didn't need to cut costs so much.

like I said, you ok?

I'm fine, and you can drop the condescension, Kyle. Your original statement wasn't clear.

I still don't see what the purchase price of either franchise has to do with the money spent on free agents. Seems like two separate expenses to me.

Considering Freddie may turn out to be a rental for the ChiSox, I think the M's did fairly well in this deal. They get the White Sox' top prospect, a decent young C and a fair IF prospect for 3-4 months (potentially) of Garcia and Ben Davis, who's in AAA trying to regain his stroke and his confidence.

Reed hit very well his first 2 seasons in A and AA ball (.356 BA, .430 OBP, .509 SLG, 81 BB/60 K/674 AB). He's struggled a bit this season, hitting .279/.362/.426, but I'm encouraged by his strike zone judgement (36 BB/33 K/272 AB). He doesn't seem to be a guy that will hit more than 20-25 HR at his peak, but he could be a .300+ hitter with an OPB close to .400. He hits a fair amount of doubles, so his isolated power isn't awful. He could turn into a real good #2 or even #3 hitter. He's not David Wright (my favorite hitting prospect in the minors) but he's not far off...

Olivo looks like an upgrade over Ben Davis, at least as a hitter. He'd have to be pretty bad defensively to be rated lower than Davis in that area, so he's likely an upgrade there as well.

Morse is a bit harder to read. He's a tall infielder, appears to be high-risk/high-reward kind of hitter - he seems to be turning his doubles power into HR power this season as he matures, but he's got poor strike zone judgement and his .287 BA this year is his highest so far in his career. He looks like more of a gamble, but if he can improve his ability to make contact while not losing much of his power he could end up being a pretty valuable MLB hitter.

The word from the M's side of things is they told Freddie to not take this trade the wrong way - they did it to improve the future of the team but they'd love to re-sign him this off-season and asked him to give the M's a chance to top any contract offers this offseason. We'll see - given that Ozzie Guillen is one of Freddies closest friends in the game, I'd suspect the White Sox will have a real good chance to sign him to an extension, but you never know.

Sigh.. as a sox fan it hurts to see Olivo going.. I mean, talk about a guy who is all hustle, has awesome defense, a cannon for an arm, pop in his bat, and some great speed. On top of that hes only 26..

He was one of my favorite to watch because he played hard and was never afraid to throw behind a runner.. Oh I hope this trade works out for the sox in the end..

For instance, if you bring a bag of baseballs to the side entrance at 1 Royals Way, you could leave with either Darrell May or Brian Anderson

Now, now, let's try and offer a deal to the Dodgers that is fair.

Not likely, considering the Yankees were looking hard at Garcia and now will probably go for Ortiz.
