songs mentioning 4th of July/Independence Day

I meant to post this earlier today, but it just slipped my mind.

I'm the type of music nut who ocassionally loves to throw together a bunch of themed songs on a mix or just compile lists. This one is particularly on-topic because of the impending holiday and the fact that a co-worker/friend of mine does a weekly themed radio show - this week his theme is obvious.

We've been tossing around songs for weeks now, but I'm sure there are many out there I'm either forgetting or don't know altogether. I'd love to hear what the collective board can come up with.

What songs do you know that are either about or specifically mention the 4th of July or independence day?

off the top of my head:

"4th of July" - Aimee Mann
It's the 4th of July, another year has gone by
And when they light up our town I just think what a waste of gunpowder and sky..

"Saturday in the Park" - Chicago
Saturday in the Park, it must have been the 4th of July...

"Homebrew" - 311
4th of July, with Lucy in Sky, I remember pine trees and the coat of many colors

U2 did a song called 4th of July, but it was an instrumental. Might have been the Aimee Mann song, but I've never heard it, so I can't say for sure.

Dola,

Bruce Springsteen also had a song called "4th of July (Asbury Park)" he did with the E Street band.

My b-day is the 5th, so I pay attention to thing related to the 4th

if you want to cheat a little, Social Distortion does a song call "Born to Lose" and the (somewhat) relevant line goes:

it was a hot summer night in mid july
a hangover and a black eye
your momma said i was a loser,
a dead end cruiser,
and deep inside i know that she was right

i racked my lyrical brain trying to think of 4th of July songs, but i kept singing this instead...

4th of July - Soundgarden, one of the few songs I like from Superunknown

The Wallflowers:One Headlight. Though I never really understood the lyrics. She said it's cold it feels like Independence day and I can't break away from this parade. It's always freaking hot here on July 4. Maybe this is like one of those wrapped up like a douche where I am not hearing the lyrics correctly. Or maybe the song is just too deep for me and I don't understand the figurative nature of cold.

I googled & found a music blog that addressed this very question.

It came up with 7, several of which are already mentioned here.
http://palmermix.blogspot.com/2003_0...x_archive.html

The additions would be:
"Fourth of July" - Dave Alvin
"Justice & Independence" - John Mellencamp

Iced Earth is pretty much classic 80's heavy metal, but for some reason, I've always dug them. Probably because they were the only true metal band that was going strong throughout the 90's. The band is basically only one guy at this point - Jon Schafer. Everyone else has changed 2 or 3 times. The newest singer is the old Priest singer, Ripper Owens.

I had a thread about the newest album, The Glorious Burden, back when it came out. It's noteworthy since it is a bunch of songs about different people/events in history. The 3 song EP that comes with the special edition CD is an historically accurate description of some of the battles of the Civil War.

They're clearly an 80's metal band, and all that goes with that, but they're no Manowar, on the Spinal Tap Scale.

Iced Earth actually played a show up at Lupos in Providence a few weeks back and i was half joking with my buddy that we should go check them out. It would have been an interesting experience for sure

I imagine the only thing worse than being born on a holiday is being born the day after a holiday.

Back when I was growing up, and we didn't have much money, my folks used to tell me that the fireworks show was everyone celebrating my birthday. They stopped telling me that when I went car to car looking and asking for my birthday presents.
