Whoops.
After being late coming back to work from lunch a few times in recent weeeks, I decided it was time I invested in a watch. But I also figured that, y'know, if I was gonna spend the money, I might as well go all out and push the "geek" envelope as far as my paycheck would allow.
That wasn't quite so far as, say, one of those Suunto GPS watches, or one of the MSN Direct watches that'll deliver news updates to your wrist, but $100 bought me a pretty nifty Casio solar-powered, atomic watch. Now, I'm not as much of a gadget hound as some folks I know. My interest in such things is, with the exception of gaming, strictly practical. But that said, I'm fairly tech-savvy. I can walk a soccer mom through a wireless network install on the first try, and while my experience working at Best Buy is limited to the game department, I know enough about everything we carry to be dangerous. That means I'm usually able to set folks up with a TV, a computer, or even a washing machine, should the need arise. So I must say, I'm a little bit embarrassed that it took me five attempts to manually retrieve the signal from Ft. Collins to realize that yes, my watch WAS in fact receiving the signal properly, but that dumbass me hadn't properly set my home city to Los Angeles first...so the signal I was receiving was for New York City. I suppose my first clue should have been when the time shifted from two hours ahead of what it actually is here, to three hours ahead. I am shamed. |

Yeah, it is. I'm not crazy about analog, and they didn't have one in binary.

You seem like a really nice guy, so I'll take it easy on you. I also don't know how old you are. But comon! A Digital Watch?!?! Do you wear knee socks with tennis shoes? Do you wear dress shirts buttoned to the top with no tie? Do you wear sneakers with Kacki's (sp). Guys should never wear digital watches. I'm sure you spent good money on it, so I'm not accusing you to be cheap. I know were all computer nerds around here, but you gotta draw the line somewhere. Anyone else agree/disagree with this? |

Tell you what, if I ever work at a job that requires me to wear a tie to work, I'll go analog. In the meantime, though, this one has the feature set I want, and being digital just means my near-sightedness won't get in the way. ![]() They do have 'em in analog with the atomic/solar features. They were just two or three times as expensive when I was doing my research, and I felt like spending what I did on it now would serve me better than going another two or three months without. Plus, now I can put that extra $100-200 towards the next Xbox, or PS3, or whatever. ![]() |

I have the best of both worlds. My Timex Expedition watch has an analog face with a digital portion at the bottom.

Is that the kind of watch that has a built in calculator?

It's got a ton of built-in stuff, but I really don't think a calculator is one of those options.
![]() Not that I'd need it. I can do basic math (+, -, *, /) in my head to within 2 or 3 decimal places pretty quickly. Anything more advanced than that, a watch calculator couldn't help with anyway. ![]() |

Agreed, I don't think I've worn a watch more than half a dozen times in the four or five years I've had a cell phone. No need. |

I go with digital at work, since it's so hard for me to figure out what 1400 really is. Also, Nike makes the best watches.
![]() I have an analog watch; a fake Tag Heuer that I got in Saudi Arabia for $75. It's kinetic, so I don't have to worry about winding or a battery. It looks frickin' real. I wear it when I have to go out in a suit or something. |

I respect your right to wear a digital watch. One of my good friends has one, and it's a cheapo one too. He's a total nerd, but he's my friend.

Bah, you trust someone else's approximation of the time? One must wear one's own analog watch, synced to official time, at all times.

My battery has been dead on my watch for about 2 months. I haven't gotten it fixed because my cell phone has a clock. But, I miss being able to have a watch to look at. It's one of those things you take for granted, until you don't have it on.
Oh, and I miss accessorizing my outfits. (limp-writsted wave).

Ever since I started getting a reputation for wearing wristbands (somehow, they've become part of my "look" over the past three years), I haven't worn a watch. It doesn't look right on my wristbands. The cell phone works well enough for me, though.

I do, too (well, not as much recently). I can just think of better places to spend my money than something that stays hidden under the cuff of my shirt 95% of the time. The other 5% is when I'm looking at it to see how late I am. |

I get more comments on my Fossil (blue) watch than any other watch I've had. When this one gets old, my next one will be another Fossil... although I hope to have this one for quite some time. I love how the hands and tick marks glow in the dark.. ooohhh neato!

I have a Roots Blue Trans Canada, and I like it.
It's analog with a digital display on the bottom that gives the time or date... comes with a crazy 20-year warranty too, and my first battery replacement is free. ![]() |

pix pls thx. I have a nice watch, but once the battery died and I went without wearing it for a few days, I realized how little I needed it anymore. Although I think I'd rather trade my cell phone and wear the watch if the phone wasn't so useful. I'm sure it's generational, but I always feel slightly ridiculous talking on one, especially in public. |
