Error #s in baseball?

I never really did bother to think about it much, but I figured it'd be good to know. I'm not a 'die hard' baseball fan of any kind, though I've been following the Padres as of late to while away a good hour or two. I can understand most things, but when it comes down to numbers...I get a bit thrown off.

During a baseball, often I'd hear things like: "...grounded into a 4 - 3 double play...", etc..

What the heck do those numbers stand for? How many are there?

Those numbers refer to positions. 4 = 2nd basemen, 3 = 1st basemen. 1 is Pitcher, 2 is catcher, 5 is SS and 6 is 3rd base. 7, 8 and 9 are the outfielders, dunno the order though. (Also not sure about 5 and 6, they might be switched too).

When they say "grounded into a 4-3 double play", I'm guessing that it means it was hit to the 2nd basemen, he tagged 2nd base, then threw to 1st to get the second out.

I don't remember what position refers to which number, but every position on the field is represented by a number. So, the 2nd baseman could be a 4, SS is a 3, 1B is a 1, C is a 5, etc... (those aren't the actual numbers).

So when you hear a 4-3 double play, it refers to who was involved in the double play. 4-3 means position #4 got the first out, and position #3 got the second out... I'm sure someone here can tell you what each position has as a number.

I'm certain that 5 and 6 are switched (5 = 3rd Base, 6 = SS) - I believe that 7 is LF, 8 is CF (I'm sure of this), and 9 is RF.

Someone please chime in if those outfield numbers are wrong.

so for exampe

a 6-4-3 double play would involve the shortstop fielding the ball and tossing it over to the second baseman for the first out who then would throw to the firstbaseman for the second out

and for example if you hear F8 that means a flyball to the centerfielder. 3 unassisted means the firstbaseman stepped on first and got the out himself

Just another question too:

On those 'assists', Outfielders get plenty of these when they gun down a runner at the plate, or at a base, correct? What exactly are these 'put outs' that I hear about as well?

A putout would be when an outfielder catches a fly ball, the fielder who tags out a runner is given a putout, the fielder who is covering the base on a force play is given a putout, and the catcher is given a putout on a strikeout.
