NHL EHM: Where do we go from here?

Here I am, sleeping in bed, and the phone rings. It's way too early to start thinking about what the man on the other end is saying, especially with that heavy Czech accent he has. I manage to hear two words, manager and hockey. He hangs up the phone, and I turn and fall back asleep.

The next day, I find an envelope with two plane tickets to the Czech Republic with a note, typed in english.

"Dear sir,

Thank you for accepting our offer as General Manager of HC Lasselberger Plzen. It will be a pleasure to work with you. Here are your tickets. Have a safe trip.

I am now in shock. And, now I understand the call from the Czech Republic. The name at the bottom of the letter rings a bell... being the hockey fanatic that I am, I remember he used to play in the NHL.

It has always been a dream to be a general manager and I might never get the chance to do this, and if I do well enough, maybe I will be able to get a job in the NHL and come back home to Canada. My mind starts racing, and I decide to go. I start to pack and am on my way to the Czech Republic.

When I get to the airport, Marek is there to greet me. I ask why a player is taking such a big role in my hiring, and I find out that he's the only player on my team who can speak English.

I better learn how to speak Czech... or at least hire an assistant manager who can speak Czech and English.

Marek shows me to my new office, and I look at the roster.

There are some familiar names. I have a Straka and a Dvorak.. but not Martin or Radek. The board wants me to "improve the roster" which to me means, we don't have a chance to win anything. I'll see what I could do.

I then look at the goalies, which I feel are the most important part of the team. I see a very familiar name that brings a big smile to my face. Marek Schwarz. For those who aren't familiar, he is slated to be the 2nd best goalie available for the upcoming NHL Draft. I see he is on loan from his team in Prague for the remainder of the season, so I immediately try and get his rights through transfer.

We have two players whose rights are owned by NHL teams, and no players who have CHL rights. The players with NHL rights are RD Mario Cartelli (9th round, 2001 - ATL) and RW Jaroslav Kracik (8th round, 2003 - CLB) so they aren't exactly superstars.

It should be fun...

As soon as I figured out that Cartelli was drafted by the Thrashers, I also realized he was on loan as well. Chemopetrol then bought Cartelli and nullified the loan.

August 25 : Milan Voboril to Prostejov (Transfer: $40,000)
August 31 : D Ales Dvorak signed to 2-year deal
August 31 : Libor Barta to KLH Chomutov (Transfer: $48,000)
September 1 : Signed G Rod Taylor to a one-week trial
September 4 : Signed G Tyrone Garner to a two-week trial
September 4 : Signed G Drew McIntyre to a two-week trial
September 7 : Released G Drew McIntyre from trial
September 13 : Signed G Rod Taylor to 2-year deal

The emphasis on goalies was to try and find a 3rd stringer since I let Barta transfer and Schwarz is going back to Sparta Prague at the end of the season since we couldn't work out a deal to acquire his rights. Taylor, a 18 year old American, won a preseason game 5-1 which solidified his place as the 3rd stringer. Ales Dvorak is an 18 year old Czech who didn't have a job and is now a regular in my lineup.

I have yet to find an interested English-Czech Assistant Manager, so I think I will just give up and go with just a translator. I have sent one of my scouts to scout Eastern Europe and the other to scout the Czech Republic for young talent.

On October 3rd, I bought Zbynek Novak from Slavia Praha Jr's for $110,000. He was scouted by my scouts and they gave him rave reviews.

My team is starting to come together. I added another blueliner, and we have won 3 straight games. Pardubice is still undefeated at 18-0-0 which is unbelievable. They have a very solid team, led by former Flyer and Oiler Jiri Dopita.

Chemopetrol then bought Cartelli and nullified the loan. Here are the major transactions I made from August to September. August 24 : Mario Cartelli to Chemopetrol (Nullified Loan) August 25 : Milan Voboril to Prostejov (Transfer: $40,000) August 31 : D Ales Dvorak signed to 2-year deal August 31 : Libor Barta to KLH Chomutov (Transfer: $48,000) September 1 : Signed G Rod Taylor to a one-week trial September 4 : Signed G Tyrone Garner to a two-week trial September 4 : Signed G Drew McIntyre to a two-week trial September 7 : Released G Drew McIntyre from trial September 13 : Signed G Rod Taylor to 2-year deal ===== The emphasis on goalies was to try and find a 3rd stringer since I let Barta transfer and Schwarz is going back to Sparta Prague at the end of the season since we couldn't work out a deal to acquire his rights.
