FOF Survivor League

For anyone who is interested. I have started up a 12 team fantasy football survivor league at www.xpertleagues.com that is named FOF Survivor, the password is Solecismic.

The auction draft begins once all the teams sign up and nominate a player for drafting.

Basically, the lowest scoring team in the league each week will get 'booted off the island'.

There are more details on the site. The site has a lot of cool features, but it may not seem to be the most user friendly at first.

Sounds like fun. I've never tried an auction draft before.

This will be my second, or at least 1B. A group at work set one up and the auction started yesterday. I made a couple possible bad bids, but it has landed me Manning and Moss, now I just need to find a few steals so I can save some of what little cap money I have left.

Looks like it's starting to fill up as we're over halfway there with 7 people now. We can nominate a player at any time as the league won't begin until all the slots are taken and each team nominates a player for the auction.

It will notify everyone once the clock starts via email.

Okay, I've encountered a bit of a situation in another league that I am in. The only trade so far has been of draft picks. One team trades the 8th pick in the 4th round and the 8th pick in the 6th round to another team for the 2nd pick in the 5th round and the 2nd pick in the 7th round.

My problem is that one team moves up for both picks while the other one loses out in each instance. The problem gets a bith more complicated. Come to find out, the team that is losing out in the deal is the commissioner's son and the commissioner is the one that is gaining in the deal. To complicate things even more, I made a post on the message board that was replied to by one other team and a third team posted the problem in league news.

This post has been since deleted by who we believe to be the commissioner. All three of us treaded lightly when brining up the problem that we had with the trade to not start trouble. We did this because the commissioner is our Director at work.

I'm at a point where I want to quit the league but that could also cause trouble with him as it will lead to a bunch of questions and since I alreadhy posted about the trade, it will be obvious that is the reason why.

I know the other logical answer is to just finish drafting and forget about it but my competetive side can't quite let it go. Plus it's not fair to every other team in the league and with my past experience of running leagues online, that is usually my top concern.

Oh, it's also hard to walk away as my picks through the first three rounds have been Priest Holmes, Marshall Faulk and Mike Vick (the possible beginning of a very solid team).

Any suggestions on how to handle this.

Is this a 4 team league? Why don't I ever play against guys like these?

Seriously, given your start, and the miniscule advantage gained by moving up 6 slots in the later rounds (when differences in player rating among owners is vast, and may not end up changing who each team gets) and the other concerns (if push comes to shove, bite the bullet and lose gracefully to your director) I'd just stay in the league.

If it's not a $$ league, I'd just bite the bullet, go through the motions and do whatever the director wants. Channel your competitive nature into other endeavours.

Why does every single fantasy football post need a reply like this? Holmes is a consensus #1 or #2 pick, but Faulk is a risk 2nd rounder (who may retire) and in many leagues the QBs don't star to go until rounds 3 and beyond. So what's so unrealistic about having those three guys off the top?

As for the question of what to do: quit. Collusion trades are the death-knell for the league, dobuly so if the commish is involved, and triply so (if triply is indeed a word) if the commish is trying to cover it up. This is not a league you should be wasting your time on, so might as well cut your losses now before you get too attached to it.

Come up with some excuse (you won't have time because of family concerns, etc) and just get out.

It would be rare in a league of 12 teams you end up with those three off the top. Perhaps Vick and Holmes but Faulk is better than the 24th pick.

Looks like we're just two teams away from having a full league and the auction will begin as soon as each team nominates a player, which may be done at any point after you sign up.

I hope to avoid the mad rush of bids that I did in another auction league (though it netted me Moss, Tomlinson and Manning). Of course now I have to get creative to fill out the rest of my team.

Vick and Holmes are both in the top 5 of most fantasy drafts.

EDIT: Looking at actual data rather than guessing, in ESPN's average draft position, Holmes is #1, Faulk #11 and Vick #13. So having all three is understandable if the league size is 6, maybe 8 if 2 or 3 of them are clueless. If the league size is 10 or 12, and you got those 3, you are playing with a bunch of morons.

Sorry. No way. Holmes yes, but Vick will not be anywhere near the top 5 unless you're playing with complete newcomers or in a league with bizarre scoring rules.

Antsports average mock drafts have Vick at #25 in a 12-team league. Which puts him at exactly early round 3, just where he apparently went in Eagle Fan's draft.

So how does the bidding work? Is there a certain amount of time for each round?

There is a timer that resets when someone bids. Once either the timer runs out, or everyone else passes on a player, then whoever nominated that person can now nominate another player. There are no actual rounds as it all depends on how long it takes until the price reaches a point where everyuone passes or doesn't bid on a player.

It looks like the first group of players will take the longest as that is when everyone has the most amount of money left to bid with and that's usually the better players coming out.

Some ways to speed up the draft are using a bid range up to what you may want to spend. This will automatically up your bid if someone else tries to bid on that player up to that high bid level. Also passing on a player that you don;t want, or has reached a price that you think is too high, will also speed things up. The thrid way is that next to nominate you see Auto:On, that means that the computer will nominate a player for you once your nominated player has been taken. You may turn that off if you want to nominate your own players.

OK, sounds interesting.

Do we set lineups in this league, or does it just take our top scorers for the week at each position and use them automatically?

It will take top scorers for us automatically. The pay leagues are different on the site but I'm not sold on that site enough to enter a pay league on it. But for free, what the hell...

Now the bidding can begin. If you want to bid on someone, click bid by their name and you will get to set a high and low limit for your bid, just click submit from there and you're on your way.

Good luck to all.

Cool.

Does the six-hour timer go 24-hours a day? Or does it stop overnight?

What the hell happened with Jamal Lewis? Was there some sort of frantic bid war that pushed his number way up? I like the guy, but to wind up going for more that LT or Holmes... wow.

Looking at the board right now, there are several leading bids that are just ridiculous -- on both sides (too high and too low).

You can only bid on the eleven players that are currently on the board. When players get drafted then the players that we have nominated will one at a time be available for bidding. Or at least that's how I understand it...

You most likely have auto:On, which will automatically nominate the highest remaining available player. If you turn that off, then you can manually nominate a player when your currently nominated player is taken. The player that you nominated with have the letter N in a box to the left of their name, so you can get an idea of how long it may be before you need to nominate again.

Crap, I didn't even want Travis Henry, just wanted to take a roster spot and cap dollars away from someone.

It appears salaries do not have to balance. When I click on the link to propose a trade to Maple Leafs, I get a screen in which both of our players are listed (without salaries). There is an additional line for trading auction money.

So it appears that the money not a salary, per se, but rather an amount used to "buy" players. It further appears that all sales are final - you own the player and that money is gone. Once you own them, you can exchange them for other assets or cash.

I think we should complete a trade involving me getting Portis, and you getting Henry, just to verify this information.

Oh, I also started a quick daytime draft league as well if anyone is interested. No password and it's called Daytime IDP, IDP means that you draft defensive playes instead of entire defensive units. There is a one hour time limit to picks and it's just during the daytime hours (EST, resumes at 9 each day).

Hmmm . . . this was my first auction type draft and it shows. I only got one decent running back; I have three tight ends on my roster; and I had a bunch of money at the end to pick up kickers and defenses even though I really only wanted to spend $1 per on those positions.

How do others think that they did? Any hints on the best way to do these things that people want to share now that this one is over?

I'd never done one before, but I went in on the assumption that the best strategy was to spend big bucks on a couple of key players, then sit back and hunt for bargains.

It worked for me... kind of. I wound up with both Tomlinson and Portis at reasonable prices, and with Barlow as my third back I should have the strongest RB squad.

But I was too conservative on the WRs, and ended up not getting much of anything. I'm going to need to get really lucky at that position to stay alive very long.

I also got caught trying to drive the bidding up on Shockey and wound up stuck with him. In hindsight it didn't hurt that much since even though I paid more than I wanted for a TE, I still had money left over. But I would have rather spend that money on a WR.

I also didn't pay much attention to bye weeks, which will probably kill me if I manage to make it to week six and seven.
