NHL EHM: Signing players from overseas

I'm still very early into my first season of EHM, and I was hoping to sign Oleg Tverdovsky who is playing in Russia I believe. His contract says he has an NHL Release clause, but when I attempt to offer him a contract the game warns me that he won't be available until June 2004.

Why can't he come over right away?

The international transfer window is only in the NHL offseason.

But he has an NHL release clause... players come over mid-season all the time in real life. Is this "international transfer window" even a real rule? I've never heard of it before...

If it is, you aren't alone in having never heard of it.

But it sounds familiar from the world of soccer.

There is an international transfer window. If you don't sign a guy by September 15, he cannot play in that current season. However, I think there is an exception for players that have previously played in North America...but I bet the game does not implement that. In reality, if you sign someone playing in Europe during the season they have to clear waivers before they can join your team. For this reason, almost nobody is signed that way since they might just be gobbled up by someone else before they ever suit up for you.

This is my understanding of the rules. It is actually pretty complicated.

It's Brodie from Mallrats about 45 seconds prior to being dumped

You caught me off guard with this question though, I turned sigs off a long time ago because I found them distracting from the actual posts and had forgotten that I even had one!

Actually, the player in question can come over as soon as his season is over. This basically means that if a player in Modo (Sweden) is signed to a contract with say, Colorado, during the regular season.. and Modo then doesn't advance to the SEL playoffs which start in March, then he could head to Colorado. This is why you might see players come over for NHL playoffs sometimes.
