IWS #77 Results
33 entries this week. I was pleased with the questions, only one true eliminator, and 2 wide open questions. There was one perfect score.
1. Name a baseball team (not the Yankees). Boston Red Sox - 16 Chicago Cubs - 12 Los Angeles Dodgers - 2 New York Mets - 2 Atlanta Braves - 1 Close one between the two tortured franchises. In the end, the Yankees mention, I think, tipped it to the Sox. 2. Name a baseball player. Barry Bonds - 23 Alex Rodriguez - 4 Babe Ruth - 2 Sammy Sosa - 2 Roger Clemens - 1 Derek Jeter - 1 The one eliminator. I toyed with exlcuding Bonds, and I obviously should have. 3. Name a baseball stat. Home Run - 21 Batting Average - 10 Run Batted In (RBI) - 2 I asssumed a certain someone's "hitting percentage" was referring to batting average. ![]() Chicks do, in fact, dig the long ball. A little surprised I didn't get even a single pitching stat. 4. Name a famous All-Star moment. (If you describe one decently I'll be able to get the jist, don't worry about providing exacts) 1970, Pete Rose crashes into Ray Fosse - 17 2002, game ends in a tie - 7 2001, Cal Ripken homers in his final All-Star game - 3 2003, Hank Blalock homers off of Erc Gagne - 1 2002, Torii Hunter robs Barry Bonds of a home run - 1 1997, Larry Walker fears Randy Johnson pitching - 1 1993, John Kruk fears Randy Johnson pitching - 1 1946, Ted Williams gets a homer off of Rip Sewell's ephus pitch - 1 1934, Carl Hubbell strikes out 5 Hall of Famers in a row - 1 Immediately after posting this question, I regretted it, thinking the 2002 would run off with it. I obviously was wrong. Funny that two separate Randy Johnson incidents made the list. 5. Name a player who is in Baseball's Hall of Fame that should not be. Phil Rizzuto - 7 Bill Mazeroski - 6 Tony Perez - 3 Don Sutton - 2 Gary Carter - 1 Orlando Cepeda - 1 John Clarkson - 1 Ty Cobb - 1 Andre Dawson - 1 Dennis Eckersley - 1 Rick Ferrell - 1 Tommy Lasorda - 1 Gaylord Perry - 1 Kirby Puckett - 1 Amos Rusie - 1 Ryne Sandberg - 1 Ozzie Smith - 1 Hack Wilson - 1 Nobody - 1 Interesting smattering of answers. In the end, Bill James' main example from Politics of Glory carried the day over the recent controversial inductee. I'd have said Perez myself, and lost quite a few points. Special congrats to those voting for players not actually in the Hall of Fame. ![]() 6. Name a player who is not in Baseball's Hall of Fame that should be (not named Pete Rose or Joe Jackson; dirty cheaters don't count. )Ron Santo - 8 Ryne Sandberg - 6 Bert Blyleven - 4 Barry Bonds - 4 Roger Maris - 2 Dale Murphy - 2 Jim Rice - 2 Michael Jordan - 1 Dave Kingman - 1 Cal Ripken - 1 Sammy Sosa - 1 Joe Torre - 1 Interesting set of answers here; a few people went for the Bonds double and going for the active player not yet eligible. Didn't quite work out, but didn't kill you. A pair of Cubs carried the day; good choices, in my opinion, as well. Now that the answers have been shared. Here are the final results: THE FIELD Code:

Damn Home Runs, can't believe I went with batting average instead! Oh well. My second top 3 finish in the last 10 or so. Eventually I will win one of these!

I can't believe A-Rod was such a distant second. The NY media must really throw off my perception of the baseball world.

I can't believe it either. I thought it would be pretty neck and neck. I mean for me, ARod was the first name that popped into my head. |

OH, MY GOD!
I WON!?!? Oh, my god! I'd like to dedicate this win to my mother, who has been wonderful to me all my life. My girlfriend who has been by my side since day one that we met! I love you! I love you! Thank you everyone! *on a side note* Can someone do #78 for me?? IF no volunteers, I'll try it out. |

Doesn't the runner-up assume the resonsibility if the winner is unable or unwilling to carry out the duties of Mr. IWS? |
