catwoman
there is no way to write this without it coming off as sounding like bragging, but i assure you it isn't.
i had the unfortuante experience of seeing catwoman today, and felt obliged to warn all of you to stay far away from it. it isnt funny, sexy, exciting, or good in any way. you have been warned. |

Exactly, we'd probably rent it if we had the monthly pass. I sure as heck wouldn't pay to watch it. Starsky and Hutch is out today... I'll watch that one. Last edited by Lorena : 07-20-2004 at 12:39 PM. |

Ugh. Shymalan is simply a terrible filmmaker. Its like he has a "pure crap" generator running at full steam in his office, with an infinite amount of schlock at its disposal.

Agreed. Signs was pure drivel. The Village looks like the same thing...ooh there are scary noise coming from the dark over there. 2 hours elapse and something finally happens. Sixth Sense was a homerun but this guy gets so much pub he's like Speilberg or something.

I liked The Sixth Sense - great film seemingly out of nowhere that pretty much everyone liked. I liked Unbreakable - I realize most hated it, and my friend put it best "This movie walks a fine line." It definitely walked a line between genuinely thoughtful and really corny. Despite the fact that I think it plunged headlong into corny in the final few minutes, I liked the concept and most of the film enough to forgive it. I really think the basic concept the Samuel Jackson character lives obsessed with is fascinating on it's own (and entirely possible, but that's a whole other discussion). I thought Signs was an ejoyable suspense movie-theater movie. Again, I hated the ending and thought there were a few far more interesting ways it could have ended. Still, the movie gave me the "genuinely creeped out" feeling I *rarely* get when watching any horror/suspense movie. He can really nail atmosphere when he's on. I'm looking forward to The Village, although I'm a little skeptical about how long he can seemingly keep making a movie with a very similar premise (supernatural freak-out).

Me too. But, I watch the trailers with the "That movie looks terrible. I HAVE to see it" attitude. Yeah, its going to stink, but the stench is Halle Barry's Sweat. I'm intrigued. EDIT: The original "its not sexy at all" comment has me very bummed.

I fully feel this way too. Producers put way to much stock into him after the 6th Sense (which was great movie - but not outstanding). I was thinking that The Village would be just as bad as his last 2 films, and kept that train of thought until i saw the very latest trailer they are now pushing. The cast looks great, up until recently i thought it was just Joaquin Phoenix, but if Sigourney Weaver and William Hurt thinks its worth acting in, it might just have a shot at being good. |

The ending of the movie just ruined it for me. Seriously... SPOILERS! * * * * * * * * * * * * ...why would the aliens invade a planet that's 2/3 covered in a substance that's toxic to it? They've apparently been studying the planet for decades and they never figured out that water was a bad thing? Please... Of course, I am looking forward to The Village with great anticipation...

What's with these horror/scary movie makers...M Night Shyamalan's The Village, Wes Craven's Dracula...
I'll give them credit; putting your name in the title is marketing gold once you've had a hit.

That's exactly it. If people trust your movies, it's an immediate draw/attention-grabber. Rather than just hearing about "The Village" and being clueless, you can go "Oh, cool. Another M.Knight Shamalyn movie!" (if you're into his stuff obviously). |

Do NOT READ ANY OF THIS POST IF YOU DONT WANT THE MOVIE "SIGNS" SPOILED!!
. . . . . . . Quote:
Remember the scene where they're now in the basement, something is trying to open the door, and in the panic Joaqin Phoenix breaks the light bulb? It's pitch black and very scary (this was a really good "creepy" moment while in the theatre). Anyway, my suggestion on where to take it from there: lights out. door gets broken open. in the darkness we just hear yelling, banging, scrambling, screaming, then silence. end of movie, and we've got a horror classic. (Bonus! The movie would probably clock in at like 80 minutes, so theatres can show it that much more, allowing the studio to charge more for it, and everyone makes a few more bucks).

Eh. I liked Signs and Unbreakable, but I will probably wait to see The Village until it comes out on DVD.
I have a 9 month old baby... going to movies is a big deal, so I limit myself to the absolute cream of the crop. |

I knew Catwoman would be a stinker the first time I saw a pic of Halle Barry in that god-awful cat suit.
As for M. Night. I've liked all his movies, except Unbreakable...Sixth Sense was definitely the best, but the others have had enough moments of interest to keep me hooked. Last edited by SFL Cat : 07-20-2004 at 06:10 PM. |

that's a pretty good idea. although my twist would be not hearing any screaming - just making it known that the door was broken open, then end of movie. your way it would seem like the family died. my way would leave you with that "did they or didn't they survive". the movie wasn't about Aliens and them attacking us - it was about faith (and signs). it could have been about being lost in a forest, and substitute aliens with bears and wolves. but nevertheless, your ending and my twist, while good, would make the point of the movie moot. you needed that end scene where they make it out of the basement. that's where all the signs get tied in: the girl's water; Gibson's wife saying the cryptic "tell Merrill to swing away"; the boy's asthma attack saving his life; and the abandonement of faith and then finding that faith. |

Yeah, but I really don't think you always need a payoff on that stuff to make it worth happening. Things just wrapped up a little too neatly, IMHO. I mean, what's wrong with having someone abandon faith and not regain it? Or not get the chance to? I think that can still be interesting film on it's own. |

I thought Unbreakable was a great movie and the best of all of his films.
I was sort of looking forward to Catwoman until I saw the trailer, Sharon Stone has turned into Mrs. Partridge, I was half expecting Susan Dey and Dacid Cassidey to come out and try and help her. |

I haven't seen Unbreakable. Would like to, just haven't seen it yet. I really, really liked Signs. I thought Joaquin Phoenix was excellent opposite Gibson and I've like several of his performances, especially Buffalo Soldiers. I've really been looking forward to The Village. Even after the 1st preview I told my wife we're going to see that opening weekend. In General, I like Shymalan's work. As stated earlier, he has a knack for getting the mood of a horror mood right.
Quote:
The Sixth Sense on the other hand did absolutely nothing for me. As for Willis being dead, I turned to a friend I was with and told him Willis was dead after I saw the scene in the hospital where the kid tells Willis he can see dead people and they don't realize they are dead. The scene with Willis in the living room with the kids mother was confirmation. It was, to me, a movie that wasn't good to begin with. But when you take it apart after knowing he's dead it becomes appalling unbelievable. I apologize for envoking the wrath of the rolleyes. I shall beg forgivness by saying 100 hail Deans. ![]()

I took my girlfriend at the time to see The 6th Sense about 3 weeks after I had first seen it. I was looking forward to her reaction during the big reveal, about 3 minutes before it occurs, some asshole sitting in the row behind us leans over to his friend and says "He's been dead the whole time", i wanted to strangle the son of a bitch.

I only said it that loud because there was some dork there with his girlfriend, pathetically trying to be smooth. So I thought I'd just save him some trouble and kill the mood.

Come on, I knew Bruce Willis' character was dead within the first 15 minutes. The whole buzz about the film was that there was a surprise twist...knowing that coming in, I had to try to guess what it was. So after the beginning, that's what I surmised, and everything else after that just stood to confirm that.

See, i saw it on a Tuesday afternoon the weekend after it came out, i don't think anyone in the theatre (there were only 20 of us if that) had heard anything about coming in, we were just up for a mid day movie. If i had heard anything about coming in maybe it would of spoiled it for me. I get the feeling that you had to go into this movie with virgin knowledge of it to get the full effect. |
