Thumbs down the day ESPN officially went off the cliff

Ok, They're airing "Happy Gilmore" tonight at 8?

I could understand the bad original movies, I could deal with playmakers... but just airing what can barely be classified as a sports movie is ridiculous.

Would you rather see a Spelling Bee or eating contest?

Shorty, do you know the meaning of the word 'nemesis?'

Still, this shit is crossing a line in my mind. Fuck ESPN and the Mrs. Robinson romance between Linda Cohn and Mike Hall.

I agree. The eating contests and spelling bees are at least competitions.

This is a sports channel, I don't want them to ever show movies, not even sports themed movies.

In related news, WNBA action is on ESPN2.

Yes, that's right. When execs were looking at programming for this evening, and saw no games available from other sports, they thought "Should we put WNBA on the flagship network?"...then said, "No, let's air Happy Gilmore."

Not so strangely, that was a unanimous decision.

You know, when I was in Las Vegas last month, I was really looking forward to seeing an ESPN Zone for the first time. The place itself was all right, and I had fun in the game room that was there. For those who don't know, the Las Vegas ESPN Zone is in the New York New York casino. My second day in the city, I won $400 from a slot machine at New York New York. I thought about running over to the ESPN Zone store to buy a shirt or a cap with "ESPN" on it, but I didn't do it. Why? Because I think ESPN has gotten so lame lately that I didn't want to spend my money on their logo. Eight years ago, I would've spent the whole $400 in a place like that. Now they'd have to pay me to wear their stuff.

Now let's hear something about this Linda Cohn-Mike Hall thing. I like Linda.

It could be worse, they could have decided to go with the WNBA.

I say, bring back Australian rules football and stuff like that.

No doubt. I have to get up at 4 AM to see a decent rugby match on Fox World Sports. I'd much rather see something like that than X-Games or women's 9-Ball.

As much as I like Aussie rules, your second sentence still doesn't quite redeem yourself from the first.

For some reason when I couldn't sleep the other night and was watching sportscenter at like 1.45 (when I had to wake up at 5.30) that was the sort of vibe I was getting. Just where my mind wanders at that time of night...

And I also like Linda, never understood the Linda haters.

I can deal with Linda.

I agree, bring back stuff like Aussie Rules. Bring back the CFL, too.

Heck, they should include old CFL games on ESPN Classic. Or even just spin off another network with a similar idea to ESPN Classic, except air exactly the same programs as 25 years ago. So today, we could watch ESPN exactly as it was in July 1979.

(I've thought this would be cool for networks - for instance an old lineup from CBS including MTM and Bob Newhart...ok, I think TV Land did this for a night. But howabout a whole network? Or even video on demand....I want to see say, prime time tv on my birth date...ok, I'm straying now....)

It's time to skip 3-5 and let Bill Simmons create and run ESPN6 as soon as possible.

The "Worldwide Leader In Sports" is consistently reducing the actual sports shown on their channels, which now is up to 4. They are following the trend set by MTV, where you make your name in a particular niche but eventually move away from that completely. They will one day launch an ESPN3 which will actually show the sports they no longer want to put on ESPN (which will be full of generic programming, some of which might loosely be based on some kind of sports-related theme). ESPN2 will become what ESPN is today...and so on.

Unfortunetly those bastards from Fox (who throw them on Fox Sports World) have to outbid for Premier League Games. I can see EPL games getting a decent rating late night on ESPN2.
